Nice find, I read a lot of articles on their site and watched their earlier gumball vids last year when they were in Europe.

Hahaha, He thinks he can beat the record set in 1983? What's this guy thinking? Too many traffic jams now. He wouldn't be able to do it if it was 1984.

Did you read the article? He did beat it-- by a fairly significant margin.
Lots of technology and tons of planning in fact did manage to overcome additional road crowding & traffic, but it took him a couple of attempts.

He did beat the record by an hour and 3 minutes. That was probably one hell of a ride thats for sure. If only i had the capital to fund this i would try it but alas i do not. Kudos are to be given.

Why would he not use a silver Crown Vic? He's already commited to using police lights on his car, why not go the whole distance? No one would call 911 for a speeding silver or blue crown vic. People would just assume it was a cop or a fed.

He wanted to drive across the country, not tour repair shops.

lol. Seriously though, modify the crown vic's drivetrain, but keep the car stock appearing. Clearly he has the money to extensively modify a car. there's plenty of High performance stuff they could do to the car.

I think that would actually take some of the fun out of the experience. However there would also be the added thing of knowing that your chances of getting pulled over are far less and he may actually be able to get away with flying by a cop car in the sheeps clothing per say.
2 sides undercover or don't care lets do it

Probably because the M5 with minor mods is much more stable at 170 than a crown vic. Hell, getting a crown vic up to 170 would be a difficult task and get enough MPG to make it any distance. I'm sure the crown vic lacks the required style needed for this type of trip too.
He ran a Bentley Conti a few years back in a US rally. There's a youtube vid somewhere where he was pulled over by a fan in an off duty crown vic. Kinda funny.

Just an FYI, this year's gumball starts in SF, goes to LV, then to North Korea and on to China with the final run ending in Beijing for the summer olympics. Price per team is just north of 100K.

True.
I just could not let that one go.
