View Full Version : My project...Warning! Not a Camaro.

Well...I am starting my last project for a while. This car is for me and me only so I am not concerned about the money spent this time. Its an 82 Mustang GT that I bought when I was 17. My first "real" car and it did me good for several years. I parked it in 1996 and its been sitting since. I've done so many other projects and it is now time to do my baby. She deserves to be on the road rather than sitting beside my house!
Here are some pics:
A few weeks ago...

And here is what she's getting.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Im using the engine, trans, wiring harness front to rear, HVAC and dash, seats, console, steering column, etc. Pretty much the only things not being used are the front and rear suspension or brakes. I have Cobra brakes and IRS but I think I will ditch the IRS for a full Griggs set-up as well as their front suspension with coil overs. Im excited to have my Mustang back among the living! (Its sort of pro-touring.) Just wanted to share in case there are any four eyed guys lurking on here.:dunno:
I have already mounted the dash and most of the mods to fit it. I still need to trim the defrost panel. Then tackle the steering column. Then the door panels. Once the interior is finished it will be mostly remove and replace! Its amazing how similar the fox bodies are from 79-04!

Cool project. Sucks to strip such a nice car though. I dig the 4 eye better though. Good luck man.

please tell me the mach1 is hit really, really hard and you just cant see it in the pictures...
also, do you plan on incorporating such items as the air bags and other creature comforts?
good luck. i actually just got off the phone with a friend of mine about his fox body. needless to say, he shoulda brrought it to my shop and done his own motor work. leave it at that.
anyway, keep us updated. id love to see how this works out.

Yes...its hit really really hard. Actually the front drivers side is hit and its not worth fixing. Surprisingly the only thing damaged is the sheet metal. Even the firewall is crinkled pretty badly.
As for air bags...I figured I would use air bag deletes as I am not sure if air bags would still work in my car or if they'd blow when I hit the brakes or something weird! Thats still up in the air. But yea...pretty much all the other creature comforts will be used.

I LOVE 4 EYE MUSTANGS! Too bad Ford's powertrains all suck. I could never bring myself to build a chevy powered one.
It's funny that first I see the post with the XR4Ti today, and now this one. My first two cars were the Notch and the XR4 pictured below.

Thanks for the thoughts. I will keep it updated. I finished welding in the HVAC firewall piece from the 04 and the dash is ready to install. I now have to tackle the steering column/firewall.
The Mach 1 really is trashed...I would never cut up such a car for the heck of it. I bought it at an insurance auction. Out the door was a little over 5k. I cant believe how much of the car I am going to be able to use. That is gonna save me a bundle! I suspect I'll have about a fourth of what my Camaro cost me in this car! How awesome is that?!

What is that? The engine I mean. Thats not a mod motor is it? I've seen the carbed 5.4 mod motors. Kinda cool.
I have always loved that model of Ford truck. My grandpa had one...65 short bed...that he gave to my cousin. I think it is still rusting away in the woods right about now. I wish I would have had a chance with it!

I will say this is a ton of work! I lost track of how many times I had that dash in and out and cut here, trim there, blah blah blah.
It will be nice having the new dash and all that comes with it though!

Its been a while so I thought I would post some updates. I have most of the mods done. I still need to finish the interior quarter panels. But this weekend I painted the engine compartment and sprayed the underside with second skins spectrum. Next up I will start transferring the wiring from the 04 to mine and do the sound deadening inside. Still waiting on funds to order the front suspension (Coil Overs, K member, etc from Maximum Motorsports) but I have enough work to keep me busy till the first of the year.

Modified 04 door panels to fit my 82.

I thank this qualify as Pro touring project ,the Fox body was not a sport car it was platform for 11 other cars it was made by Ebenezer Scrooge's (not real but close), but if you do this right it will be a sport car and IŽam looking forward to pics and plans of your work, good luck to you

Nice build...I was really into the thirdgen camaros and it's real common to fit the 4th gen interiors into them, haven't seen it done with the mustangs though, looks like it should go well.

Its going really well. I have the fuel and brake lines installed. Fuel tank and smog pump installed. All the wiring is in. Most of the interior is in except kick panels, rear panels I still need to finish and some other little trim pieces. Tomorrow I will install the IRS and then button up some interior wiring connections (tail lights). I'm amazed at how easy this build has been. Easy being relative I suppose. I am using sooo much from the 04. It is great that Ford changed so little over the years. :)
I am taking the doors off next to do add power windows and door locks as well as the spectrum, then paint the door jams, etc before putting them back on the car.
I am hoping I can order my front suspension in the next few weeks.
Happy New Years to everyone!

I just got home with the car from the alignment shop. I dont have it registered yet but had to drive it around the block before putting it back in the back yard. MAN! I am gonna love this thing! The Mod Motor sounds awesome! And it drives great so far. I still have some work ahead of me but I'm getting there. Its been almost 13 years since I drove it. What a feeling!

Wow, I can't believe I am just now finding this thread. Just when you thought everything that can be done with a Fox Mustang has already been done, I find this project and see something exciting and original. It looks great, keep it up. I love the Marchal fog lamps, hopefully you can clean them up and find another matching cover. It would be great to incorporate them on the finished car.

That looks great. I'm surprised at how well the SN-95 dash and door panels fit in there and how at home it all looks.
The SN-95 upgrade was basically a reskinning of the fox chassis with some key structural upgrades and stengthening. It was actually designed as a convertible first, then a coupe was created from that point on (opposite of the way the fox was designed). Most of the chassis measurements are the same from Fox to SN-95. I bet the Mach interior feel right at home in the Fox chassis, the same goes for the suspension and drivetrain. It looks great too!

Great build man. I have most of the 03-04 cobra DNA in my 91 GT. I didn't have the dough for the mod motor, so I kept the 5.0. I like what you did with the door panels. I had a heck of a time modifying mine. Since I'm kinda tall, I needed all the elbow room I could get.
Good luck with the rest of the car. If you're interested, there are shots of mine in my fquick.com/frankenstang page.
