I'm thinking to do it right (see all the cool stuff, eat in greasy spoons, make it about the drive not the destination) would take 10 days start to finish (one way).

Is this about right or am I still pushing it?
What are some cool stops?
Any places where you want nearly half or a whole day to hang out?

I figure I will do this once, need to do it right.

How fast is the travel? I'm figuring 45mph average speed is not that conservative considering the towns, mountains, and the type of road.

10 days? Give yourself at least a month! That would be a blast though. I live within walking distance to Route 66. And I remember when they tore down the Route 66 drive in up the street in 1994. It was a pretty sad deal since we grew up going there, taking dates, sneaking in beer. They replaced it with a Best Buy. :banghead:

Some from the area might know the rock radio station KSHE-95. They operated from a small cinder block building on site there for many years as well before it was tore down.

Coral courts was an icon too, but they tore that down as well... sad really, but there are still lots of old memories visible from the era.

That would be a fun 'tour'. Imagine you could get caught up in one state for a few days seeing all the sites.

Me too.
I saw the "Cars " Movie .
I've always wanted to take a trip on Route 66.
Looks like a fun way to see old hometown America.

I have done most of the chunk that goes through oklahoma at one time or another. Be sure to check out Pop's gas station in Arcadia Oklahoma. Its a really cool gas station/resturant that was built recently actually. Has something like 300 different kinds of soda pop. Its nice to see new attractions being added to the old route 66.

I've done it twice in college. I was on a solar car "race" from Chicago to LA. We didn't get to stop much, but it was a great time. The average speed was only about 30 mph, so I'm sure you could get plenty of stops in along the way.

I did a lot of it. It was depressing, really. All I saw was what used to be. Even the spots that were popular were destitute and barren now. I even got food poisoning from one of the most fabled hotels to stop and eat at on the way in New Mexico. The people were downright rude to us because we weren't locals.

I drove a little bit on it when I was out in Arizona a few years ago.

Sadly...I never did get my kicks on it.

I think you have the beginning of a pro-touring.com tour . RT.66 beginning to end. I have always wanted to do it. What better site to start it?

I took Route 40 across the country when I moved to L.A. a few years back. It's amazing how much of Rt. 66 runs right next to it from Oklahoma to California.

It was a good reminder while moving from one big city to another that there are HUGE chunks of this country that are still almost completely empty of people. It's something else to do 80+ for hours at a time with only the occasional other motorist or 18 wheeler on the road with you.

For a random bit of Rt. 66 trivia, how funny is it that the 6th spur off of Rt. 66 (Rt. 666), had to be renamed to Rt. 191 / Rt. 491, due to the high rate of sign theft? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_491)

I drive a portion of it daily.. I live in Bristow, Ok and drive to Tulsa, ok to work and Rt66 runs through Bristow America... There is someone here in Oklahoma that is putting together a 365 mile, 3 1/2 day trip on Rt 66. That is how far it is across Oklahoma on Rt 66 or what's left of it anyway.. If I find the link again I'll post it for ya.. I would make the run but I will be back in Iraq at that time of the year.. It's in October...
