no diag bar, vinny is having a killer interior put in the car at a later date and he drives the hell out of it so we left it out, the stereo or interior guy would hate me. Once done with interior etc we will add a few things especially whenhe starts racing more.
No we did not pull headliner, just have some expsensive welding blankets that are soft, you can hold blanket in hand, put penny on other side, heat penny till it melts with bare hand underneath, its unreal.
The cage in the car now will keep him safe at current speed levels, we will modify as he does.

LOL, do you think the fuel safe cell could mount in the car like it is in the pic and no be sticking thru the trunk?
there are 1x1x.125 straps holding the tank up, with 2 upper straps holding tank down to the sub structure, that i built out of 1x2x.125. i will get picks for inquiring minds.
true, worked on your car at all?

Damn True
03-15-2008, 07:52 PM
Just curious.

You mentioned the "midmount fuel cell" and I was curious as I thought you might be doing something other than the relatively standard installation that we see here.

I had all kinds of visions of what "midmount" might mean..."Hmmm is he going to saddle mount a vette cell over the trans hump in the back seat area?" "Is he going to mount a Porsche cell up against the bulkhead?"

So by "midmount" you clearly meant in the vertical plane. I thought you might have meant the longitudinal plane and were considering moving the cell toward the center of the car to reduce the polar moment of the fuel load.

...and yeah, as a matter of fact I have been working on my car. Not much happening yet as we just moved into the new home that we just built and have been getting the old place ready to sell. My garage workshop is not yet ready and there is still a bunch of non-garage stuff being stored out there. Thanks for asking.

hotrdblder
03-15-2008, 08:26 PM
true, no offense taken or it is not what i meant, i will provide better details on mid mount cell, sorry, as with email and internet you coul dnot tell how i asked the question, sorry i confused you, i was actually wondering if you had began working on your car after your new house build, not asking you hoping you said no so i could come back with a smart ass remark. glad the car is in your mind at least, it is very stressful building a house, but i am sure it will give you a great idea on how to organize your car build and stay on sched.
you need to do a thread to bring build and ideas up to date

03-15-2008, 08:35 PM
No worries jake. Just curious.

BTW, how did you get your welds around the full circumfrence of the tubes with that super-tight fit?

Did you cut holes in the floor and drop the hoop through the holes or something else?

I hope I can talk the guy that is going to do my cage into doing it w/o pulling the headliner. I fear that nearly 40yrs has rendered it rather brittle and I just know I'll jack it up either getting it out or putting it in.

hotrdblder
03-15-2008, 08:38 PM
good body placement and getting creative, no on this cage we did not drop it thru floor, the hardest ones were the forward down bars, the others i had room to work, and always kept the blanket between the torch and work
the problem on camaros and making cage fit tight is the main hoop is on the rocker so to drop it thru is a real pia, the rear down bars i kept in like 2 inches from side of car allowing me pretty decent access.

Damn True
03-15-2008, 08:48 PM
Cool. I wish some of you guys had the time to take more photos while you are doing your work. If for no other reason than to demonstrate how things are supposed to be done.

Nothing but respect for people who are genuinely good at their craft.

As for the build thread. I'll get to it when I have something more profound to show off. Generally, I don't like to toot my own horn (SN95?/Pearl Cyclone).

...and yes. The house was huge and I am tremendously relieved that the process has come to completion. It was a two year project when you combine the time spent finding the architecht, coming up with a design finding the contractor, getting permits etc. The actual construction only took 7mos. Seeing something that big and that important to my wife come to fruition has been extremely satisfying. She now understands the car which is cool. Now we just need to get the other house fixed up a bit and sold and its game-on for the Camaro.

So no problem with it being in close proximity to exhaust componentry?

The over spray was not that bad, however I agree I would not of wanted to spray in my garage for the same reasons. I would call them and ask about rolling. I know some of the cheaper stuff like Herculiner can be rolled on so it seems like you could with this. I think the problem is getting an even coat. Many of the Jeep guy's use the roll on stuff and like it. I think most important is the prep. As for the exhaust I don't know as car is still in several pieces.

Thanks

hotrdblder
03-28-2008, 01:05 PM
true, it can be rolled or brushed, the texture will be different, if you buy a box of platic car cover and put it on floor and sides of car, there is little over spray, more or less where the gun is aiming and what blows by the part your spraying, there is no clouds of fumes etc.
its very durable and completely usable for underneath a car, jason used it on fuel and 3-4 other vehicles and said it held up awesome, and he drove the crap out of fuel as well as the new owner
jake
ps. the spray gun is easily cleaned with lacquer and can be re used many times, its just a shultz gun nothing fancy, i have had mine for 3 yrs,lol

another update we are on the home stretch, got the nitrous from NX, and it is awesome stuff, will provide detail pics later but brian havins there really set us up with the right stuff the first time.Got the rear passenger floor pans raised and new panels made, got rear firewall sealed and coated, and interior is all in and doing final nitrous install, vinny will be drag racing next monday, he also got slicks and skinnys for it, should run a very low 10 on a 100 shot.
it ran a 7.63 100 8th with 265 18 inch rear tires peddling it the whole way. should be good for high 10;s on motor.

got car done and to vinny, he wen drag racing today, and had a blast, got his drag package wheels from ccw, which are killer wheels, he is running a 26x12 m/h slick in the rear on a 16x11 and a 17x4.5 on the front with a 26x4 radial skinny
he ran 11.05, 10.84 then 5 straight 10.60's with a 10.60 flat at 130mph with a 1.60 short, the 1-2 shift was hitting rev limiter all day, the 2-3,shift was perfect, he is shifting at 6200 motor rev limit is 6800, hes got 1-2 tenths left on motor once dialed in, plus he didn't turn on the happy gas today, we will see what 150 and 200 shot do for it, this is all on air ride air bar, rear susp. will have pics at the track later.

Jake,

Did you guys take any photos of how you integrated the support structure you are using for the cell to the rear frame-rails and trunk floor?

hotrdblder
04-15-2008, 01:00 PM
true, what i do is cut entire trunk out frame rail to frame rail, i leave about 3/16th out off the frame rail flange so i can have an overlap joint on the new sheet metal i weld in.
i then put two cross car crossmembers in usually 1x2x.125, i then put two front to back crossmembers in 1/4 wider then cell to allow room for weatherstrip and or caulking.
the front to back crossmember i lay down so the 2 inch side is horizontal, as some cells i weld mount brackets to the sides to keep them from coming up, where as on vinnys i welded 2 upper straps on to hold it down and mount nx bottle.
the rear crossmember i usually make round plates to go over leaf spring bushing hole then mount the crossmember to those as thats about the perfect distance back without needing to trim tail panel for 1x1x.125 strap clearance.
i then set the height of the cell and measure for the 1x straps, build those, set cell in and make upper straps or mark front to back crossmembers for drilling mounting bolt holes. in vinnys cell case i welded 3/8 tube nuts in the 1x2 front a and back crossmembers so it could be a one wrench deal removing.
i then close in existing trunk to the sides of the crossmembers, tacking it in below the car, so it provides a nice seam where the sheet metal goes down next to the 1x2, if you weld the sheet metal to the top its alot of work to make look nice.

Vinny, Jake...hell of a job. That car is plain awesome. Talk about a car built for pure performance and purpose. I don't know of many cars (or any car for that matter) that can play in a G-Machine's backyard and a drag cars backyard at the same time.

And all on an Air Ride suspension. Hell man, Brett doesn't need to build demo cars to hawk his stuff, Vinny's car should be on his payroll 24-7. LOL!!!

Nice work Jake and congrats to Vinny. Lets see some pics of this little honey with her pro-touring shoes on.

tony thanks, yeah this car is all about go, its not perfect, but it runs good enough to counter that, it was built to be driven, if it was perfect it woul dnot get driven, you should see the lower rear 1/4 talk about chips, but hey thats what driving the car does and vinny is the defenition of driving a car hard.

Thanks guys. The car ran great! I kept running better times as the day went on. I'll have the spray on for Year one. I'm hoping to get it into the mid to high 9's. :naughty:
