I've got a Bowtie Overdrives Stage 3 700-R4 that I was planning on installing, and now I'm thinking of switching to a 4L60E.
The only real difference I can think of is the ability to control it via computer, to fine tune the shifts. I know there's really no strength difference.

I'd go with a 4L80E, but I've already got the crossmember and converter.
I suppose I could sell it all as a package deal and do the swap, but I'm thinking maybe I'll save the 4L80E for my next build.

Right now I don't have anything installed, (except the crossmember)so it's not an issue of taking one out.

Should I try to sell the unused 700-R4 I've got, or just leave well enough alone?

Given two equivalent transmissions--one electronic and one not--That computer and its related sensors will enhance reliability. A throttle position sensor is simply more sensitive and more accurate than a TV cable. Likewise, tweaking line pressure to your exact application will keep the transmission from eating itself alive. I haven't had a 700 in a long time, but I remember cringing every time the 1-2 shift happened--especially on a cold New York day.

Improper tuning has given the 700 a bad rap more so than any internal hard part. And once you have tuned your 4L60E to your exact vehicle specs and driving preferences, you will never go back.

Well, I expected that from you, Steve. ;) That's one of the reasons I am considering the change. The other would be the Shrifter.

I know I will lose money by making the change, since it will be difficult to find someone to buy my "old", but unused transmission for what it cost me, never mind the shipping. I really don't like the idea of throwing money away like that.
Throwing it away on something I don't need, like the Shrifter is a different story.

Ahh, see? I never mentioned the ShrifterŽ for a reason. In making your decision, you really need to weigh the benefits of computer control vs. pre-electronic. The trans computer is truly the heart of the system. The paddle shifter is just icing on the cake. A well tuned E trans can completely alter your car's personality from "Good" to "Oh my Goodness, this is exactly how I want the car to perform!" But that also means that a properly set up 700 can be good indeed. Just be sure to patiently and diligently set up the TV cable.

Feel free to set up an appointment for an E trans test drive if that helps (or hurts). We're located in Quogue--just past Westhampton.

You can mess with the springs and weights in the governor to get that 700 to do pretty close to what you want upshifting, although downshifting wouldn't be the same at all. Maybe if you had a full manual valvebody you could get there, but then it would be manual all the time I believe.

I would think the downshifting capability would be very nice in a car that will see twisty track time. If you were going straight, you probably wouldn't need to worry.

considering how long you've had the 700 and how long it'll be before the car gets built, i'd wait for the 6 or 7 speed automatics to drop in price:slap:

maybe I'll save the 4L80E for my next build.
:hah: :rotfl: please stop drinking all the vodka!

Steve, the Shrifter is one of the resons I'm considering the change.
I've read some of your other posts on tuning electronic transmissions, and the advantages of being able to, so I know they are better, but that wouldn't be enough for me to make the change.
The "manumatic" shifting ability is enough to tempt me, thus the reason for my question.

I guess I've just got to see if I can sell the 700 for a good price before I get around to installing it.
