View Full Version : Anyone Have Forgelines on an A-body?

I'm trying to order some forgeline zx3r's for my '69 chevelle and I've run into a problem on the front with clearance between the hub and the centre cap of the wheel. Forgeline tells me the maximum hub spindle depth they can acomodate is 1 7/8" before it will bottom on the centre cap. I'm running Kore3 aluminum front hubs and they protrude 2.01" to the dust cap. I spoke with Tobin at Kore3 and he said a stock a-body hub acually extends more at 2.345. Does this actually mean that Forgeline can't make a wheel that will bolt on to a stock chevelle?
To eliminate the problem I have a couple options:
1) Change my backspace to allow me to run the max thickness back pad on the wheel and then add a hub-centric spacer to gain the additional clearance required (plus bring my backpace back to where it needs to be)
2) Run without a dust cap at the spindle pin appears that it would just clear.
3) Possibly go to a stock dust cap and "dimple" the crap out of it until it clears.
Anybody run into this before?

I talked with Forgeline about your problem yesterday. I would first try to reduce the dust cap ala cut / weld, or hammer. Then use a very thin hub centric spacer to give the extra clearance. We had to do the same thing on Bill's GTO running GW spindles.
The stock hub DOES NOT exteend that far, We have done plenty of A, G and F bodies. It is a issue with your hubs.

ya had me worried there for a second. I just tried mine on my '70 GTO and they work fine. The tip of the dust cap is 1 3/4 from the mounting surface. I got the Powerstop Rotors/hubs from Summitt on stock spindles. Damn, I thought this was the reason I needed to get ATS spindles and Wilwoods.

Clearance with the caps can be a pain. Sounds like Frank will help you out. You'll notice Intro has different style caps. That allows us to get more clearance in certain situations.

Okay, now you guys have me wondering...anybody have the dimension from the face of the flange to the end of the snout on the OE A/F/X hub without the dust cap? I'm showing 1.395" +/-.005". Maybe there's a difference in the dust caps?
Thanks,
Tobin

Hey Tobin, the Chevelle is the same as the Camaro, just a tick south of 1 3/4". GMorria and I talked for a good while and I gave him some ideas on how to create clearance. I had the same issue with Bills GTO using Global West hubs.

I picked up some stock type tin dust caps yesterday and did some measuring. It would appear that if I cut down the extra spindle that is protruding through the castle nut and flatten the dust caps I will have enough clearance to avoid using any spacer at all. I will play with it more this weekend and get the final measurements. So much for my really nice aluminum dust caps.
Frank - thanks for your help
Tobin - I will let you know what I can get the depth down to for future reference.
