View Full Version : Son of g/28 painted

My car doesn't really have a name, but I titled this thread Son of g/28 because my build closely mimics PHR's g/28 project car both in budget and theory. Also, some of the pieces (rear Hotchkiss leafs, front and rear swaybar) that I've used came directly from Project g/28. Steve listed these parts on here for Johnny Hunkins when they replaced g/28's suspension with an Air Ride set up.

Here's what I started with...a 1978 Type LT - a 78k mile California survivor. I'm the third owner and have had the car for awhile now. Sometime in it's life it was repainted white. The original color is silver and when I started thinking about returning it to it's original color, the project just snowballed.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I originally just wanted to re-paint it. Then I thought I'd update the suspension, may as well upgrade the brakes, and on and on it went.

I started with the rear suspension:

I got the Global West del-a-lum rear spring bushings installed by a local shop. It shouldn't cost much, but I ended up paying $20 for each bushing ($40 total) because I live in a small town and could only find one shop willing to do it. I left the poly bushings in the front eyes to allow the springs a little more movement. I also did the Herb Adams mod to the front spring brackets, I didn't even know about this mod until it came up in another thread some time ago. I figured I may as well do it now since everything was already apart....

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/03/modbrkt2-1.jpg

Here is a pic of the rear about ready to go in. A buddy of mine replaced the 2.73s with 3.73s and installed an Eaton Posi-Unit for me. I then cleaned and painted the rear and all brackets with POR-15. I drilled all the bracket holes to .5" to install the Hotchkis leaf spring hardware that came with the springs. It replaces the factory t-bolts and smallish u-bolts with beefy .5" bolts. Steve threw these in (along with some PHR swag - **thank you Steve**) when I bought the springs. The upgrade hardware kit was never used on g/28. Dunno why. Anyway, PST poly leaf bushings finish it off. Just waiting for the shocks to come in now and the rear will be done and I can start on the front!

Thanks for the compliments, Rook. These cars don't get a lot of love and I think they are one of the most overlooked bargains out there. Besides being cheap (I'm into it for less than $6500 so far) this was my first car and I wanted to do it justice.

Finished up most of the front end re-build today. Coated and installed the new PST front end parts (idler arm, inner/outer tie rods) and Moog centerlink. Cleaned and painted the B-body spindles and dust shields and installed them. Coated and Installed the LCA's with new pst bushings and ball joints. Got the moog 5610 springs installed. I still think I might have to cut a half to a full coil, but won't know until the car is back on the ground. Put the shocks in. Mounted the 12" 1le rotors. All that's left is to mount the swaybar and the van calipers. Here's a pic. Sure is nice to make some progress.

Brakes/suspension is completely finished now. Wheels and tires are mounted. Car is back on the ground and off of jackstands for the first time in over a year! Up next is rebuilding the top end on the motor and cleaning up that ugly firewall.

Okay, cleaned up and painted the firewall in satin black. Because I'll keep my heater (love those fall drives) I'll install an A/C delete cover from American Graffiti to cover up those holes on the left side.

I decided not to pull the engine and get into the bottom end. It is a Goodwrench 290hp crate motor that was installed about 2 years ago (the car was on jackstands the last year). I just removed all of the smog equipment, added a Performer intake, Jet Products Stage 2 q-jet and Hedman headers. Future mods include a cam, lifters, and some 1.6 rockers on the exhaust side. The valve covers are from Proform, and they are sweet.

Looks good! We are on a similar path, I'm just too far behind and ran out of budget so no big w&t for me in 2007. And yours is prettier. :)

I did the 1LE setup, and the HA mod on the spring perch as well, when I installed the TVS springs. I'm using the SPC UC arms from SC&C. No front sheet metal on my car right now either.

Keep up the great work.

Looks great! Looks like you did your homework on the suspension. Your frame and parts look awesome all POR-15'd. My setup will be similar, except for SC & C upper control arms and maybe del-a-lum bushings in the LCA's. Do you have any more info on the Herb Adams mod? I would like to do this as well...

I'm going to have to chime in as well and say "great work" along with the "similar goals" line. I'm still about a year out while I try to finish my T-Type, but next in line is the '80 Z28 rotting in the garage. I'll be watching this thread with great anticipation, keep it up! That chassis sure does look nice!

Thanks for all the compiments guys. It's nice to know that low-buck projects can still grab some attention in a mega-buck Pro-Touring build era.

Looks nice. What wheels are they?

The wheels are DeZenyo Vapors. They are made for 4th gen Fbody's and Corvette's, so I had to use billet spacers front and rear. I went back and forth with these wheels because of the spacers, but they really nailed the look I wanted and even when you factor in the cost of the spacers, they were a smokin' deal. All four are 17"x9" with Falken Ziex512s in 255/40/17s for the front and 275/40/17s for the rear. I have room to go wider in the rear, but Falken doesn't make anything wider in the 17" diam. and I don't want to buy a whole new set of tires.

Just out of curiosity, but what brand and size of spacers did you use to get the wheels to work?

Haven't been able to work on the car in a while, but was able to put in a solid Saturday of wrenchin' this weekend. Installed the Pro-touring F-body subframe bushings. I thought about wedging the subframe, but decided on lowering it half an inch all around.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/05/P1040534-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/05/P1040535-1.jpg

I also finished the installation of the American Graffiti AC delete box. I haven't wired the heater controls up yet though. I'm waiting on a new blower resistor to come in so I can figure out how to hide all of the wiring. I will probably mount it on the heater box under the dash.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/05/P1040539-1.jpg

Also finished all of the engine wiring, mounted the core support, radiator, and battery........and FIRED IT UP for the first time in over a year!!!! I had to fiddle with the distributor a few times, but it roared to life after a while. I'm lucky if it has 330hp, but it sure sounded mean with open headers and a little advance!

Project is looking great! Are you doing any mods to the steering? I love my 80, but hate the way the steering feels. You’ll have to let me know how the Global West control arms feel. I was considering a set for the 80. Have WD sub for the 67.

Keep up the posts it’s motivating me to keep the 80 around for a while.

Sweet car, man. It's always good to see another rubbernose getting the full treatment. Mine is another budget-build similar to g/28.

I wedged my subframe and it caused some more work hanging the front sheetmetal and an even bigger trans tunnel hole for the 6spd. haha It's probably not a good idea for anyone who is not changing the crossmember to retain the driveline angle.

Boyd
05-21-2007, 06:46 PM
formula,
The control arms are actually from SpeedTech, but I will make sure I give a report after driving the car. I wanted to replace the factory steering box with an AGR unit, but since I replaced it with a rebuilt one a couple of years ago I decided to save that upgrade for later. You can gain a ton of road feel by ditching the factory alignment specs. When I get the car aligned I'll post up the numbers.

Woody,
I've been keeping an eye on your build-up also. I would like to do a six-speed too, but right now I just want to get the car on the road. I'm tired of not being able to drive it.

I don't have any pictures yet, but right now I'm installing a new OER dash. I would not recommend this dash for anyone. The finish is horrible and I've had to re-drill nearly every mounting hole because they are so far off.

Project looks really good so far. That engine is on my list of maybe's. If you want a really good idea of how much power it's making you can check out the test HorsePowerTV did with that engine. They used Edelbrock intake and carb and got 306hp.
Go here http://www.powerblocktv.com/bangforbuck.html and select the HP0601 Small Block Chevy test. You can watch the dyno pull too.

...body work. This is how far I got after just a few hours. I need to get a stik-it soft pad for my DA and things will go much quicker. Still have to rent a welder and weld up the trim holes and repair that rust area by the trunk, but overall it wasn't as bad as I thought. Hope to have it painted within the next few weeks.

Have you seen the newest issue of Hot Rod? The editorial calls for a new build style - Commuter Rod. They want to see daily drivers that are high on the cool factor AND miles per gallon. You should send them pics of your car.

I did see it. I've considered it. But I've always longed to see my car in PHR. And I'd hate to burn a bridge I haven't even built yet. We'll see. It's hard to even think that my car may be worth magazine coverage, lol. But if it motivates one person to trick out a vair, then my dream will have been fulfilled.

Hey WTZ,

Welcome to the site. It's good to see another West Texas rodder on this site! I'm originally from Slaton, TX. If you look closely in the last pic you can see my Texas Tech yard sign in the flower bed.

Unfortunately there hasn't been any more progress on the car. Shortly after my last update, I relocated from Dallas to Denver, CO. Between the new job and everything else that comes with a relocation; I haven't had time to work on the car. I hope to get the garage situated (everything has been unpacked except the garage stuff) and spend the winter getting the body and paint done. I will definitely post an update when I can.

Any pics of your car?

Here's a semi-update...progress has been nill since we relocated to Denver,CO from the Dallas area in July. I was in the middle of body work on the car when we moved. With everything that comes with relocating, I haven't worked on the car at all. Now that things have settled down, I finally got around to clearing out the garage and getting everthing ready so I can finish the body work over the winter (it snowed 6" here last night!). There isn't much body work left to do, but I want to spend the winter getting all of the gaps right and making sure it's absolutely straight before the paint goes on. Speaking of paint, here's a little hint of what the final colors will be. The car will be shot in BMW silver (yes, silver is overdone - but it was the car's original color) with charcoal stripes to match the center of the wheels. The stripes will be outlined with a red pinstripe to pick up the interior color. The only thing that might change is the stripes. I really liked the "solid" stripe on Jr's Camaro, so I might go that route, but use the colors above.

West Texas Z
11-21-2007, 03:20 PM

What headers did you use? They looked like they cleared pretty well. I made the mistake and went with summit headers and they had to be "massage" to fit on the passenger side.

Boyd
01-06-2008, 06:16 PM
dstryr,

They are Hedman Elite series headers. Part # is 68278. They do fit great, I installed them from the top-they just slid right in. I did have to trim my starter shield a little, but if you don't have a shield, they should fit just fine.

It's been awhile since the last update (if you want to call it that).

As I type this, the car is loaded on a trailer and will be headed to the shop early tomorrow morning. 95% of the body work is complete and all day tomorrow will be spent tweaking the body and prepping for final paint. My plan is to have it completely ready by tomorrow night so I can come in Sunday morning and shoot the sealer, base, and clear.

I'll post pics Sunday evening.

Olav

Looking forward seeing it ready for paint., and painted. Here in Norway the bodyshop's ALWAYS tells us to remove all the old paint on US cars from the 70's. They say's impossible to repaint on the "theromplastic" paint witout it's " wrinkeling" ( Sorry for the bad language). The sealer will not seal properly and its to soft they say....
But painters always has the same story: Never gets finished when its supposed to be, at least 3 times as long time. When finished the price is twice the they told us ( therefor I always get the price confirmed) and in he end the quality/ final product is NEVER perfect. When you ask them why things turned ut like that, they tells us it's the prep/ old paint thats the problem. But they have done all the work!!!!!!!

Good luck!

Olav

Paint is done for the most part. I wasn't happy with how the front bumper looked after many hours (days) of prepping, so I decided not to paint it yet. After I'm satisfied with the bumper, I'll hang it on the car to make sure the stripes are layed out correctly and paint it. The first pic is from Sat. night after an all day prep session. The booth pics are from Sun. I forgot to bring my digital camera, so my buddy snapped a few with his cell phone.

It is beautiful in the Denver area today and it's supposed to snow tonight, so I pulled the car out and took some pictures before the storm hits.

This color combo is really hard to photograph - pics do not do it justice. It's absolutely beautiful and is exactly the look I was going for.

On a funny side note - The rubber bumper Camaro's are usually referred to as the "Disco-era" Camaros, well, the night before we painted the car, a next door party venue had a 70's disco party and the dumpster behind the shop was full of these weird decorations that said "70's DISCO". And if that wasn't bad enough, the radio station that was playing in the shop while the car was being painted was replaying America's Top 40 from July 1978! My car was built in June of 1978! I couldn't stop laughing...anyway, here's the pics

The colors are BMW Titan Silver and Mercedes Benz Graphite Metallic. I can't remember, but I think the red is from the Nissan chip book. All BASF materials with Diamont Clear.

Your 80 looks very clean. I like the hood graphics. The nose on these cars are so long that they need something to break it up. Cool car.

Finally got the bumper painted and on the car. We also painted the small pieces (mirrors, light bezels, spoiler). Originally, when we painted the car, we couldn't get the bumper prepped right and were running out of time to use the booth, so we skipped it.

I was afraid the color wouldn't match because we lost (spilled) the paint we used when we first shot the car - but it came out great. Sorry for the poor lighting - I'll take better pics this weekend.

Waiting on my new taillights and headlight retaining rings to show up so I can button it up and then send it off to the alignment and muffler shops. Then back to the house for wet sanding and buffing. Getting close!

Looks killer! Really nicely done! I'll keep looking to see your progress. Makes me want to start on my 80! I have a new motor for it and want to redo the rear end. I've also gone through some old posts and I'm very close to updating to an 02 interior. What are the colors? your colors look very close to mine. Mine is white with red and charcole. I can't tell from your pictures, but yours apear to be Silver, Red and Charcole.

have a look!

Again looks very nice

Wow formula, too much blue, use the white balance on the camera. I did a quick photoshop to show the difference.

Okay folks, a little update for Son of g/28. I toyed with selling the car a few months ago, but knew I would regret it, so I never pursued any of the offers I had for the car. For those that inquired about buying it, but never got a response, I apologize. I just knew I would never forgive myself if I let it go (especially for what I was asking for it at the time in it's unfinished state.)

The rush is on to finish the car. This project got interrupted for about a year when we moved from Texas to Colorado back in 2007, and I just found out a few weeks ago that my job is transferring me back to Texas in June. I want to make sure it’s done before we move back.

I finished the exhaust this weekend by installing a Dynomax kit. I was so excited to be working on the car again that I neglected to take pictures. I’ll take some finished pics later this week. With the exhaust now finished, the car will head to the Carb Shop in Englewood, CO this week for a dyno tuning session to find out what the mysterious miss is.

I did manage to take some pics of the new lower rocker panel trim I installed. I decided not to re-install the factory trim since it was so beat up and I wanted something that would match the brushed lip of the wheels a little better anyway. I came up with the following, pretty cheap and I think it looks fantastic.

Here’s a pic of the factory trim mounting holes on the driver side fender. How do I cover these up?
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I went to Lowe’s and picked up 2 pieces of 1/8” x 2/4” flat stock aluminum. About $9 a piece.

Here’s the passenger side mounted after painting the rocker panel below where the trim would mount.

I have all 3 pieces (fender, door, and qrtr panel) for the passenger side done and mounted and will have the driver side done in the next day or two.

Whew! It's done (well, at least in the relative sense!) I still need to install the stereo, and I eventually want to get some Jeg's seats, but it's done and driveable - finally!

I delivered the car to The Carb Shop last week and had them go through the engine. They adjusted all of the valves, re-curved the distributor, and rebuilt my carb (long, angry story about the carb - basically, the "new" carb I got from Jet Products was a $400 piece of junk.) The car runs like a top now. When it was done, I drove it 30 miles from their shop to the house - what a b*l*a*s*t!!

Here are a few pics I took earlier this afternoon. I'm still not happy with how the nose came out. The urethane noses on these disco cars are a pain in the you-know-what to get straight- especially the transition from the hood to the nose, but outside of slathering on a ton of filler it's as straight as it's gonna get.

Thanks, everyone, for the compliments. It's a good feeling when you can finish a car that others appreciate.

Brandon- nothing planned for it yet, but I will definitely be on the lookout for shows, cruise-ins. If you know of any coming up, let me know.

I know that I will be going the Street Machine Showdown at Bandimere first week of April for some drag strip action, and first week of June in Westminster KBPI will be having their Rock & Roll Car show. I will PM you some links when I get a chance.

Sorry I missed this one Boyd. The car looks great. Don't sweat the front end too much all of the late 2nd gens have this issue. Mine has an ugly problem below the headlight that I want to take a hard look at this summer.
