View Full Version : Welding turbo manifold with ''MIG'' ?

I plan on making my own turbo manifolds, but I see that alot of guys are using "TIG'' because ovbiously it looks better, but any other reason why?
because you need to make turbo headers from some pretty exotic stuff in most cases like 321 stainless steel. its not something your typical mig setup would weld properly.
yes you can tack and even weld stainless with a regular mig with wire for steel but those welds will fail with the type of heat and vibration they will be subjected too
my suggestion is if you only have a mig to work with then get everything fit and tacked then bring it to a person who can tig weld it all up properly.

you can get stainless wire for MIG welders as well, be sure to get a higher number that the stainless you are welding (if I remember right the wires are either 308 or 316).

Stainless also needs to be purged with Argon during welding...esp for a turbo manifold....
