Amity Island weeps.
I guess fighting that mechanical shark took more out of him than he's led on all these years.
Crappy mechanical shark or not I've always loved that movie. A few years ago I let my boys watch that movie for the first time. They were 3 and 5. I'll never forget my son Jake jumping about 10 feet off the couch when the shark rams the back of the anti-shark cage that Hooper was in. My 3 year old had nightmares for 3 days. My wife was absolutely furious with me. LOL!!!
I'll miss Roy Scheider. He was one of my favorites.

Still my favorite movie of all time. I can't think of another movie that had a greater effect on peoples' fear to this day, especially water. RIP Chief! ( I named my last dog after him) "Farewell and adieu to you fair Spanish ladies........"

We have a guy in our department named Robert Shaw. He's always getting hit with Jaws jokes. Everytime he walks by I whistle "Fair Spanish Ladies". He's a good sport about it. Yesterday everyone in the department was e-mailing him condolences. "Sorry to hear about the Chief...how you holding up?" Hilarious. He was still gettin' it today.

One of my favorite performances of all time.I saw it as a kid and got scared of the water for years to come.Later I found out what a truly great movie it was.My favorite from the "lady of spain" moment:
Robert Shaw (Quint): The thing about a shark, it's got lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When it comes at you it doesn't seem to be livin'... until he bites you, and those black eyes roll over white.
Robert Shaw (Quint): You know that was the time I was most frightened? Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went into the water. Three hundred and sixteen men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the twenty-ninth, nineteen-forty five. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

Quint (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0001727/): Jesus H Christ, when I was a boy, every little squirt wanted to be a harpooner or a sword fisherman. What d'ya have there - a portable shower or a monkey cage?
Hooper (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0000377/): Anti-Shark cage.
Quint (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0001727/): Anti-shark cage? You go inside the cage?
[Hooper nods]
Quint (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0001727/): Cage goes in the water, you go in the water. Shark's in the water......our shark.........
Quint (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0001727/): [sings] "Farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu, you ladies of Spain. For we've received orders for to sail back to Boston. And so nevermore shall we see you again".

The "Jaws" Collector Edition is my crowl jewel of my DVDs. Roy Scheider puts on an acting clinic. I imagine it would be pretty cool to be a part of a legendary film like that. He will be missed.

The backstory behind the movie is great also, shaw was an anti semetic who would get drunk and break balls all day on set, including calling dreyfuss the j word. Meanwhile spielberg was always one step away from having his first big movie pulled out from under him,the movie was way behind schedule and way overbudget...
As a side note one of Roy schieders best movies was "the seven ups" , which features a chase scene between a pontiac ventura and a bonneville. The chase starts in manhattan and ends, believe it or not, a few miles from where I live on the taconic parkway.
The chase ends rather "suddenly"

The driver of the Bonneville is no other than Bill Hickman.................................who drove what other famous car in what famous car chase??????????.........................????????.. ......and the answer is........the Black Charger in Bullitt.
