The horrors that lie beneath...

This is from a '71 Mach 1 in the shop. Boy this is a long car.

My dad tells me stories how guys would build whole quarters with the stuff. Ha said after a few street races they'd fall apart...

Thats about as deep as the mud on my 69. We found some fun stuff underneath. Even found a bunch of dog food bags stuffed in the rockers. No wonder they rotted out

At least you can get a panel to replace all that cheap enough. But my question is if this happend to a car you can't get panels for how do you prevent flash rusting while you work on it?

I think they are going to have to find a full quarter off of another car. The quarters that are available don't come up high enough. This one needs work all the way up to the roof and back down the rear window.

I found diapers holding up my CD player in my 86 Z28. Found a comb and paper towels under the dash.

Found chicken wire, bondo, fibergalss, brass, and riveted sheet metal in the 69 camaro.

Its amazing how some people jerry rig their cars!

Here's what I found under mine.

Did you get a little light headed and feel like getting sick when you saw that? I came across some pretty shoddy owrk on my Camaro and felt that way at first.

Yes I did. I knew there was mud there but I had no idea the jamb was busted. It looked like they used a coat hanger to braze it.
We ended up putting a full quarter on it.

Here's the after.

A little over 1" thick, spread out over about a square foot, foot and a half.

We did a black 69 camaro at our body shop 10 years or so ago. The bondo was so thick on it, the body lines disappeared in the quarters.
Oddly enough, the car had been in a Super Chevy feature that way!

We had to replace every panel on that car.

I saw an old Ford truck that someone had used some sort of tar like substance as body filler and then painted over it. Didn't look too bad until it got hot outside, then it tended to sag a bit.

I know someone that tried to use dental compound.

I remember getting an Opel GT in the shop that had a 5 O'clock shadow pattern of rust in the quarters and fender tops. It turned out they had mixed steel wool in with the mud for some reason.

I also found where someone had used mud impregnated shop rags to repair rust holes - I guess it could be called a poor man's fiberglass.

one thing youve got to remember dealing with older cars is that back in the 60s/70s auto body wasnt down to a science. guys would use whatever it took to get paint on a car, their were no mig or tig welders to use, and body filler was alot different lol. their werent spot weld tabs/tab pullers and such. not refering to this car as much since i do see red hardener and blue hardener in different spots of the filler, could have been done in the last 15 years lol. ive heard about welding with a coat hanger, putting screws in a panel then pulling with vise grips, guys in the day thought bondo was a solve all solution when it came out lol. also their was when you would wait for a warm day with no wind and wet down the ground so you could paint a car and hope for the best lmao. which alot of this still happens i hate to say but for the most part the field has modernized.

Yeah I found screendoor screen, aluminum foil, and sandpaper holding the three layers of bondo in my quarters. No body seams to the rockers or deck; and no outside bumper mounts. The thing that ticked me off the most is bondo chews up cutoff wheels...LOL!!

You can heat it with a torch and scrape it off.

Back in 2004, when I first started my project. We found on the driver side 2 quarter panels and these steel pop cans from the late 70's. Someone had cut out a section of the steel can and placed them in between the quarters. On the passenger side there was 3 quarter panels. I owned this car since 1983, but always wondered what was in the quarter panels. I just never expected to find these items.

This will take it off.

Just throttle down the air presure a little bit.

I know I was thinking that it would dent the metal, but it won't, just go easy and it will vibrate the bondo right off.

When Replacing my dash I took the old one out found a joint on top of the steering column! I wasn't surprised I bough my Chevelle on impulse. Paid in Cash $4,250 small bills in a questionable neighboorhood. Lookin back I'm pretty lucky thats all I found.

Rob, you're talking about using the scaler head, or just the regular heads with lower pressure?

Derek, the one that looks like a chisel. I was grinding some filler out one day, and the neighbor, I call him a kid, he had been out of body shop technical school about two years. He walks up while I'm grinding, and he says wait a minute I'll show you the right way to get that filler out, and he took my air hammer and cleaned it all off really fast.

I wasn't going to let him do it, I thought he would damage the panel. What I was thinking after that, when a guy grinds filler out, sometimes you will see the sparks fly when you hit metal. So I would say the air hammer is the way to go.

Oh the horrors. That's gonna make a lot of bondo dust!!

My camaro needed some work to the rockers, there was a hole right in the middle and localized rust. Hmmm. looks strange.

Stripped away the paint / rust, etc, and hmmmm. Looks like a weld did this. Hmmmm.

Wait. What's this on the A pillar? Surprise!

The car was cut in half way back when and put back together! apparently it was in a pretty good wreck. Wish I would have seen that before I got the car. I guess they did a heck of a job though, the windows fit pretty well and all.
