View Full Version : Remote reservoir pump made from pump w/reservoir?

Hey all,
Just wondering if anyone has done thing, or if there would be any foreseeable issues?

- My friend gave me a good PS pump with reservoir. Due to space constraints on the driver side from the S-trim, I will have to mount the pump low, and under the bracketry for the blower. There will be limited access to that area (or none), and I don't think the PS pump will fit in current config. I will be fabbing my own brackets.

Wanting to save a few $, I thought I would cut the reservoir down (so that it will fit), close it up on top, then use a remote reservoir from the J/Y and mount that to the side of the radiator, up higher than the pump. Run a line from it to the return port on the pump, and from the return on the box to the remote reservoir. Seems like it would work just fine. While I"m at it, I may run a line back and forth across the radiator like some stock vehicles do for a mild amount of fluid cooling (my 95 TA had that I think).

What do you experts think? Workable? Done before? Problems? Ideas?

Thanks for any info.

Jer,

Assuming you're talking about a Saginaw pump (most GMs are Saginaw), you can pull the reservoir off (it's held on with couple of clips) and move it where ever you want. You'll need to get a fitting for the pump side, and the proper hose to connect them... the pump generates considerable vacuum, so get hose spec'd for vacuum situations.

I was wondering about that. My buddy and I were looking at just the pump, and there are quite a few holes on it. Wasn't sure which ones were necessary, which ones feed the pump, etc.

Perhaps I could post a picture or two and you could comment which hole(s) are the proper ones. If I could do that, it would be even sweeter than modifying the reservoir, and adding an additional remote reservoir.

Take a look at the truck P/S pumps. They are the same pumps, but use remote reserviors. The tank on the pump is round and not much larger than the pump itself.

Truck PS pumps. What vintage truck would I be looking for? Must be newer right?

The 80's and 90's pumps came with remote reservoirs, Cadillacs had them and Corvette in certain years.
Speedway Motors has the Sweet pumps that are all set up for remote reservoirs and they have a nice mounting bracket and pulley too.

I built mine using Speedway parts.

I have a C5 pump if you want one. You'd have to supply the reservoir and hose. Let me know if that interests you.

See my website. You can likely do it yourself if you are carful and do not overtighten the fitting.

Thanks guys for all the ideas. I've got a few options to think about.

Thanks for the link. I was looking at the pictures and I see that the return goes to the top of the pump. I will look on mine to see if there is a larger hole there that I could tap and install a fitting into with some sealant as well.

I know there are some other holes in the pump body - do I need to be concerned with them I wonder? Plug them?
