I've been thinking about saving the original rear out of my 69. It's currently a non posi 2.73 rear I would like to convert it to a 3.73 posi unit is it possible. I was thinking I could save myself a few bucks by having it narrowed and building it myself(with help). Or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new unit ready to go. I will be using a DSE quadra link so I was just thinking about their rear with brackets alredy welded on.
Thanks Mike

I would recommend a professional to narrow it but as far as building it I say go for it. Very simple to do with common tools.
Check around cause its not too expensive to have a rear housing narrowed. I would charge 3-4 hours.

I've got machinist connections so thats not a problem. My concern is 3 series gears in a 2 series carrier wiil they fit?

Oh ok,
If it is a true 2:73 it will not. But I believe that might only apply to truck carriers.
If it applies to the car carrier I believe the cut off is 3.07-3.73. Sorry its been awhile since i've worked with used 12 bolt carriers. I usually buy them new now.
You can call Richmond to be sure. See if you can get gears with the appropriate thickness OR make a spacer ring.

There are spacer plates to use 3 series gears on 2 series carriers,4 series gears on 3 series carriers but add another area as a weak link. Although a Buick GS buddy blew out the spider gears onhis 2 seires posi carrier that was using the spacer plate not the spacer breaking.
