Okay, I am currently restoring my dads 55 bel air, very solid car just needs paint, new wheels and some things cleaned up here and there. But recently have been thinking about doing something with his parts car, it has lots of surface rust but not many places to fill. It could use some work on the floor pan but thats about it. It has no windows, no good chrome or stainless, gutted interior etc. bare shell of a car. What do you guys think about my current idea. I would like to get it media blasted or acid dipped, see what im working with first, replace all the panels. and get the car in paint, replace the windows and do the suspension and a nice set of black with chrome lip 18x8 and 20x10 rears "nice lip in the rear", do a mini tub in the back. For now i was thinking of running a driver/passenger seat and carpet, painting all the chrome black which thats the color the car will be, doing this just until I could save up for all new parts but it would be drivable and something fun to play with. I would like to have it in this stage by summer and then finish it over the winter. but would this be obnoxious looking in your opinions? didnt want to get flamed upon or hated on lol. its 2:30 a.m and im up brainstorming.

Do it to it man.. Who cares what others think. If it makes you smile then its all good. Plus it saves 1 car from the scrap heap.... You know they crush em and turn them into Hondas...

haha thanks guys, i just didnt know if i should hold off and not try it until i could complete it. but for right now i think ill do it. also im on the lookout for a 87ish regal to make a grand national clone..but with a 400 sb, upgraded suspension/brakes and bigger wheels. always something crazy going on around here.

and as for the hondas yes i know their hondas *sigh" but my crx ran a 11.63 on the old setup hoping for 11's now...low budget under 5k counting paint/materials and wheels. the accord is just for a dd, they just wont die i had another one the same year it had 234k when i sold it and had ran the hell out of it the whole time including spraying it, never a engine problem in the 80k i had it. my s10s i drove as dd's experienced alot more problems. even though they looked better:D.

I don't know how well the black epoxy primer holds up in weather, but id say get it media blasted and epoxy prime the whole car.... put it together and ride around in it until you're ready to paint it. Then you wouldn't worry about surface rust and you would be ready to prime/filler then paint it!

And of course it would look badass!

Iam no painter so this ma seem like a dumb question. Can you take an existing paint job scuff it with 600-800 grit, Then lay down an epoxy primer. I have 2001 crown vic police interceptor that i am wanting to paint like a satin black, and always thought the epoxied primer has just the right amount of shine for me. Thanks in advance

The whole purpose for using epoxy primer is to seal bare metal. If you are not going to take the car down to the shiny, I wouldn't bother using epoxy because the car could still rustfrom moisture under the existing paint. If you want to paint the car like a semi-gloss black or something along those lines, I would advise just getting a single stage black paint and get a cheap paint job. I'm sure you could sand the car down well enough for someone to tape it off and spray it. Im no painter, but I think everything I've said here is correct.... If not, someone please step up and correct my ass! Ha ha

if you have good existing paint id say use a flat black paint, here is a link to some hot rod black, 1 galon. would last longer and look better than primer, its actually paint just with nothing to give it a gloss appearance, well a little gloss but this stuff is more of what you would use to give it a professional hot rod look. i wouldnt just say a single stage paint and get a cheap paint job, ive seen cheap single stage look glossy as hell all day long, maaco and peaches paint cars dont they? lmao but a better way to put it is just a flat black or matte.

lol no im not refering to me going flat black at all. im going to do the bodywork and paint before i even get it drivable, but wait to do the interior and all chrome/stainless afterwards but black on black with black bumpers and grill for right now. but hey if you can find me a first gen camaro body in same condition we could do some trading;)

I would flush mount the bumpers, move the wheel well openning up in the 1/4 to more match the front, remove the front turn signals under the headlights, a billet grille, ditch all the chrome trim. the coat it all black with the billet wheels

i like that idea rocket. but i was wanting to go black for right now, as the key idea. i know how much the "bling" costs for this car, and will be putting it on but not sure about right now. dont want to mod it like mad just for a temporary solution. i need to figure out something to do with the interior, i want something more modern. if i had the interior and it was good i wouldnt touch it but id like to swap in a more modern dash and go from there. lets see what the new camaro has in it and i might cut up a new camaro dash and make it fit and do newer style door panels. not quite sure about the seats yet, id like to do something never done before so we'll see. haha i wont show anyone till im done once i start. but this forum has insprired me to go crazy on it. mainly for promotion for the shop.

first do it all black and get everything else done. that'd look tits. an all flat or gloss black (learn to paint and practice on your car and do it with a cheap single stage for now) looks good when lowered and finshed.

then a year later get a 0% credit card (HAHAHAHAHAHA) and get the chrome done and go have your car painted:

learn to paint? lol can i use a roller and pan?

just kidding!!! im actually in the process of building my shop, just bought a new paint booth, 2 post lift, all my supplies, just lacking a new welder and a few small things but hey ive done more body work than any other 20 "in 2 days" year old i know. have a certificate in autobody, its what ive loved doing since i was a kid. ive worked in a few shops doing fabrication, body work, painting, everything from restorations to imports, to motorcycles but most of the guys ive worked for, well we dont get along. i do my job, i do it right but i dont cut corners and wont half ... do things just to get it done quicker. sure i take longer on the same job than the other guy thats in there but you look at my work beside of his in the finished product and thats what the customer notices...well doesnt notice, since their not complaining about the part of the car i did just the part that the other guy did and has to re-do..haha. but anyways im rambling, i decided to open my own shop i will be doing a few cars of my own first to prove what i can do, while doing collision repair. and then promoting the shop through many car shows.

by the way...the project has drastically changed directions. ive already priced a ls1 swap, wiring, wheels/tires, every patch panel, glass, chrome/billet accessory, looked at several suspension/brake setups and started drawing out the interior ideas. ordering my floor pans, patch panels, grill and trunk monday. decided to go big or go home. im selling my 02 gti 337 edition to fund this lol. well part of it. the rest ive got in the bank.

My dads 56 is monochromed. His bumpers and most bright work are body color. And the frame around the windows and some other things are finished in a very low gloss black. He gets compliments on the paint and finish of the car everywhere he goes with it. It came out beautifuly. If I get to my other garage this week I'll pull the cover off and get you a picture.

okay guys no more flat or paint roller posts:p lol and yes i know you could paint it with a roller but when it comes to paint i dont play, since i ditched the sata and got a lps400 with the stock tip, metallic tip, and base tip ive been in heaven. but the project has steered in a way far direction from original.
