Im torn right now i can get a ls1 or a zz383 for a killer price.
The zz383 is brand new and the ls1 has 59,000 miles on it.
The camaro im building is going to be a keeper and im on somewhat of a budget building it..
With the zz383 i will have a 4 speed and build 350 to go with it
the ls1 comes with 4l80,computer and everything that was pulled with the car.

How much does budget drive the whole project? Do you already have parts for the 383 (heders, fuel system, etc) that you would have to buy for the LS1?

I do already have carb, fuel, headers and all for the zz383.
The ls1 seems to be the way that everyone is going but i think im might be getting in over my head

Hmmm - well I always push for the Manual Tranny - but it kinda depends on what you wanna do with the car
Is this a daily driver, weekend car, race car?
What's the budget?

Its gonna be a cruzer, planning 18's and 20's with air ride.
I am kinda leaning towards the ls1 and selling off everything i have for a carbed motor..

I voted LS1 hoping that you would go through the motor before you just stick it in there. You can slowly do mods to an LS1 as you find some extra dough that makes great hp gains without killing your wallet.

Good luck!

If I would have went the small block route, it would have been LSX with a carb.

Either would be good, not everyone needs a LS1, that said about a LSX stroker

You can sale that 4L60 that's behind the LS now and use your four speed no problem. Does that help you decide any better? The ZZ383 is a good choice. It's a tough call honestly. Just realize you will not go wrong with either engine. Unless of course you start deviating from your plan or start wanting more power.

LS1 and 4L80 all the way!!! You will not regret it. My buddy has the 383 in his Nova and people at the car shows walk right past his to see the LS1 under my hood. And, oh yeah, the ls1 crushes his 383 at the drag strip. My buddies nova...http://www.geocities.com/dalesnova/

Since you're wanting to be budget minded, take a serious look at everything required to get that LS motor in your car, if you haven't done that already.

I voted LS1 because I want to put one in my next car....BUT....the "bolt in and go factor" will be faster and cheaper with the 383.

Plus, you can practically look under the rug and find small block parts.

With the LS1, you'll have issues with motor mounts and maybe the oil pan, headers are expensive, etc.

I'll say LS1 - this is a cruzer ... get the trouble free setup

I faced this same dilema about 2 years ago.I already bought the6 speed trans to go behind a fast burn 383 crate motor.I started to look at the cost to outfit motor with all the accessories including a vintage air front runner assembly, carb, manifold, headers etc.then I found a pull out ls1 for 4 k with 17k miles and a 6 spd behind it.putting the ls1 in is more work with fuel lines wiring and so on.but I think the advantages of future fuel economy and performance upgrades will make it all worht the effort.

I ended up getting a ls1 and 4l60e
Hopefully its not gonna be as hard as i think it is to get it in there.
