My 67 400 firechicken is in the final blocking and a week or so away from the shining stuff going on it (blue ext/ Black int). Should I Paint the bumpers Blue or black...or leave them chrome? :hmm:I've always thought the body color bumpers are bitchin and make the car look way smooth...:bsjerk:

Second Im a little worried about how this bolt shaving and painting is done so what the "right" way to strip shave and paint chrome and so on... I just want to make sure my bumpers are done correctly if painted. My body guy is good just needs a little direction sometimes on all the stupid stuff I like.:here!::naughty:

Bumpers are made chrome and should stay chrome. IMHO. I'm personally not fond of the painted bumper look on most cars.

I would leave it chrome sometimes a little contrast is nice. I would think if it gets a slight tap the paint would scrape off and show damage more than chrome will. If you do paint it paint it body color not black.

Well first, after seeing Roadrage David's bumper...I might like them painted. Is the front painted too?

Mine are chrome right now.
Was just thinking It might be cool if I could find a good way to knock down the shine so they looked like they had more of a brushed finish, so they match my wheels.

Also considered powdercoating them.

I think whatever trips your trigger, it's your car.

Seems like a matter of taste and opinion on this one.

I guess I'm just old school on things like this but I like the chrome look as well. To paint a bumper tells me the owner was to cheap to have it chromed.(No offense David, I love your car) I have seen some I liked on different cars but not on birds like ours.

I also have not seen a front bumper on a 67 - 68 that I liked other than chrome.

The same years Camaros can pull off the no front bumper look, but you just aren't gonna do it with a bird!!

Wel my bumpers are from fiberglass!!!. so is my hood im trying to save weight here. im not building a show off plesure driver but a show off cannonball runn contender, a G-mashine(being it with a automatic) no fancy stereo and other crap.
painted bumpers look more race!!more street fighter. crome bumbers look very cool and are defenatly the bisenis when your into the pro-touring luctury stuff ore when you are a old school maching nrs guy...........ps i still have mine in perfect shiny condition.

I personally like a little chrome on 1st gens. Then again fuel was black with black bumpers and I really liked it. It really depends on the look stealth or a little flash.

https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=9513&d=1144901173II have a painted front bumper and I think it looks way better than if was chrome. The paint has held up good other than a few rock chips. The back bumper is still chrome and I like the way it looks

Totally personal preference, I prefer chrome.

here's what i do when painting previously chrome parts: i take the items to the chrome shop & have them strip the chrome off down to the nickel layer. then sand the parts & put some etching primer on. it bites into the softer nickel very well. then you can 2K prime , wetsand & paint. if you are shaving the bolts, i would do this first before stripping the chrome, the acid bath will help clean the welds.

I think if you paint the bumpers the look will be dated in a few years. Besides, those bumpers are part of what set Firebirds apart from camaros.
As for shaving the bumper bolts, I think your chrome place would be able to do that for you.

The chrome will give your paint some contrast. Painted bumpers look good on a 97 not a 67!

Remember what your car is, a 1967 Firebird.

Stay away from trendy things that do nothing for your car. Leave the fog lights & spoilers for the kids with the Hondas! Oh yes, the painted bumpers too! :usa:

My .02. If it's a pro touring car and a keeper, you build it to the specs you want. Here's the scetch I've been building to (but she'll be all black), and my work in progress.
Good luck
