View Full Version : Rear spoiler design feedback

Without giving away too much, I need some opinions about an adjustable rear spoiler design.
If you were to put a rear spoiler on your car would you want the hinge to go across the entire length of the spoiler or just have small sections where it mounts to the trunk?
Would you like stainless or black anodized aluminum finish on the hinge?
That is about all I will give away.
I need hinge feedback people!!
EDIT: here is a stainless full length hinge:

Here is a black anodized hinge, partial length:

Neither design will look like our spoiler, but here are some visuals for thought.

I like the second design. Looks more NASCARish to me.

My preference is black anodized and having the hinge in sections so the hinge doesn't look too over powering.

Shoot me some info when you get it worked out.
I have a 67 blk. camaro i would like some thing different for.

I like JPs design better, but that will not work on a FBody as you know unless you move the hinge/base of the sopiler forward and mount the adjusters near the rear edge. More hinge will work/look better though IMHO.

will this spoiler be compatible with 3rd gen novas by chance?

Both are too industrial looking for my tastes if not on a race car.

Although, id take Project 50/50 rear spoiler if you were selling that thing. :yum:

The first design's drawback to me is the flange goes forward of the spoiler. Sitting up there on the decklid. I like the flange behind it like on John's car. But I'd rather have it one piece, I'd be scared it'd whistle.
/that's how I plan to build mine anyway.

I like the look of Johns better, but it won't work on a first gen Camaro. For a Camaro a single piece spoiler would be better.
The first one is probably better because it covers the holes in the decklid that most of us have from our factory spoiler.

+2 - a bit 'mcmaster-carr' ish for me unless it's a real track car. (JP's car can pull it off since it's the real thing)
I like the GM pieces, even the firebird one on the camaros, but if I were to do something differnent I'd do a fixed carbon fiber unit or something along that line.
but wait, who's going to be the first to steal a rear wing off a nascar 'car of tommorow' and slap that honda like thing on a camaro??

Dude, if you're not building a race car, there's no way you should have that kind of spoiler on there. It's not quite the mark of "poserhood" that a ricer wing on the back of a FWD car is, but it's pretty close. Big wings look ridiculous, but if they're truly functional, you can get away with it.
Why not just go all out and put a Dodge Daytona wing on the back?

If you are building a car that will see motorsports action, my apologies for the sarcasm. In that case I'd see if there were any difference in the aerodynamic properties (e.g. does the gap in the partial hinge design affect the airflow?), and go with the one that's most functional.

dont care for that type of spoiler. just dont like the look on a 1st gen. i just wish somebody would make one like the stock one but fits tighter to the car without the gap from spoiler to decklid.

I'm kinda with you there too,I just can't get behind anything I've seen so far for a 1st gen that would make me change from what I got.jmho...

Don't know where I saw one but this type of spoiler on the front of a first gen looks great......seen one before just don't know if it was on this site or someplace else?

Tyler - something similar to JP's design, with a less intrusive hinge would be my preference; anodized black vs. stainless would definately be better as well. In my opinion, I have found the sacrifices required of the continuous hinge design visually detremental to the overall design.

I think it is the next wave???? but i personaly think they are a bit too hard core for the masses, i would run one but think i would take it in natural aluminum or CF so i had the option to finish it the way i wanted

Something like on the 50/50. Carbon fiber. Not hinged. Should sit a little lower on the car.
Must cover existing mounting holes.

You could build something similar to what's on the banks camaro. it has a hinge design that itself is a little obtrusive, but in design principle is sound. These little brackets could be built to line up with existing holes in the trunk, and be adjustible just like the billet shift lever you guys make.
here's a detail on their hinge design for those who missed it.

Here's the actual spoiler. It looks weird in this fully "down" position.

Here is what I was thinking. Split-Notch Carbon Fiber spoiler. The pic is of plexiglass not the CF, and the hinges would be not as wide and made black with rounded edges.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
The struts going in the 'A' config are easier to adjust, but they look better in the 'V' config.
It has a nice range of adjustment as well.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
We'll keep you posted as we finalize the design. So far it covers all existing holes from a factory spoiler.

What's the timeframe? I like the CF and want to go to a more aggressive rear spoiler. Is yours taller than stock?

I kinda like it. I'd like to see some better pictures(different angels) to fully understand how it's gonna look.
I'm also wondering how well it would work on my car since I have been running a Camaro spoiler for over 2 years now???

That flat surface will give some crazy downforce at speed on a road course. Tyler may have to start making front spoilers to counteract the rear downforce.
It looks good and tunable...and looks like it may be made to fit stock factory spoiler holes... :naughty:

How broad of a doubler are you putting on the inside of the trunk lid for those support mounts?
