I've got an 98 Audi A6 that's my daily driver, and I recently drove a 98 Range Rover. I was pretty impressed the the Range Rover, has all sorts of bells and whistles. It got me thinking of getting rid of the Audi for the Range Rover but I don't know how reliable or expensive to maintain it will be. Do any of you guys have any input on the Range Rover's? And would you rather have it over an A6? Thanks

Paul

I like the looks of it. My uncle has an 03 and loves it.

Does the 98 have the lowering and raising feature(thinger)? Theres some that raise 5 inches+ for when you get high centered. Pretty trick!

Paul, I think they are probably one of the most expensive vehicles to fix/maintain if something goes wrong. There's a shop near my house that used to have (no lie) 4 or 5 Range Rovers outside that have had engine fires. Seems like an awful lot, if you ask me! JMO of course, but I think you should stick with the Audi.

Yeah the 98's have the adjustable suspension. That is a cool toy. Like I said, they have all sorts of bells and whistle's, it'll almost wipe your butt for you. But are they expensive to maintain and are they reliable? I also wonder how much gas they go through cause they feel really heavy and the one I drove felt sluggish even with the 4.6.

Thanks for the reply, I'm gonna have to look into that. That would suck if i got rid of a perfect car and bought one that is likely to burn itself down to the ground.

Arn't they british?

There is an old joke that goes like this...

Why don't the british make computers?

Answer: Because they couldn't figure out how to make them leak oil...

;)

As for the 98 I would research with JD Powers and Consumer Reports to see how thier owners rate them..

hey guys, here is my 2 cents, Range Rovers look cool, ride pretty good, have lots of toys. I finance cars for one of the largest auto finance companys in the country and we absolutly do not like giving loans for them, for 2 reasons. Repo rate is high because everytime the break, its $1500 to fix it and people don't pay the monthly payments. Another reason is think of this. New they are 50k. After 3 years you can get them at auction for $18 to $20k. the decrease of value is tremendous. My advise is stay away. I know a ton of people in the business and even the Land Rover dealers say they are a good car to lease for 3 years and give it back!! Just my 2 cents.

Trade the Audi for a Rover and I will recommend a good shrink for you to see. Transmissions as well as the suspensions are weak links. Get used to probably 12-14 mpg.

I can substantiate Jay's statement about resale values, (I work for an auction company) although the product got better when BMW took them over, now they are owned by Jaguar (Ford), so time will tell. There are a lot of unknowns regarding long term quality. IMO you are better off with the A6.

My $.02.

Here's another one for keeping the A6. You've got a good car there. If you want a sport utility vehicle, go for the Lexus. It's a lot better than the Range Rover.

I think the Land Rover is more for the person that digs them. You have to like them enough to put money into them. Just like guys that ride Harleys. You see Harleys with overheated or blown engines on the side of the road quite often in the hot mountains(I see them every year on the way to BC) Why do guys still ride them? Because they love the company enough to keep on putting money into them. Just like Land Rovers.

Now before anyone jumps on me. Harley was just an easy example. We all know Chevy painted their engines orange to hide all the RTV Silicone. LOL

Range rovers are awesome....

....if you like depreciation, and having to tear apart half the engine back to fix a part you invariably have to part with a kidney to pay for. Audi's at least have a strong enough aftermarket to keep that in check. Unless you are gonna trudge through mountainous regions, don't do it man.

Thanks for all the input, I guess I'm gonna stick with the Audi. It's really comfortable but like Mr. Quick said I wish it was an S4. Thanks again

Which motor is in your a6? IIRC they came with a 2.8, which was really the same thing as the 2.7 in the s4. Since audis do have a wicked aftermarket, and that motor is really the same thing as the v6 a4 as well. So you can find a bunch of stuff about it. I'm also not sure what the difference is between the VW vr6 and the 2.8l in the a6, but I expect it to be relatively minor, and people are making good power on vr6 with a turbo setup.

I don't know anything about the other motor, I think it was a v8, that was offered as well.

Check out www.audiworld.com. They'll help you out, but you aren't without options.

A-6 great little Hot Rod.

Yeah it has the 2.8 in it, I think it's rated at like 190hp. Pretty underpowered for that car I think but I can't complain about the ride comfort or reliability so far. I saw that some one makes a supercharger for them that adds about 95hp but it's like 5 grand. I rather sell it and buy an S4.

That's another option, s4's a great cars, lots of fun to drive. The seats suck for distances though, wickedly hard. Toys for S4's are ungodly expensive too.

Italy says: Trade A-6 for an RS-6 if you really want to trade.
Hey there isnt much more crude oil out there, dont waste the rest driving a british car, let them make gas until the last drop of it.

Hey Andre, If you get me in with the Italian Mafia I might be able to get enough cash to get the RS6 :machine: I just went to Italy about 2 months ago, Awesome country! so much to see and do.
