Did a quick search, didn't turn up and answer. Can a LT1 intake be used on a Gen I with vortec heads? Seem to recall reading that somewhere.....

If so, good, If no, I guess I just wasted some ebay bucks.....

Not sure about port lineup between the two, bolt pattern between the LT1 & Vortec heads are different. LT1 & Vortec combustion chambers are the same, so the ports may line up. Also Vortec heads/intakes have conventional water passages just like traditional SBC, LT1 heads & intake watter passages are different. LT1 intakes do not have any water crossover passages at all. Also the LT1 intake does not have a hole for the distributor.

An LT1 intake can be modified to work with traditional SBC heads. Check www.lt1intake.com

From LT1intake.com:

Will the LT1 intake fit Vortec heads?

No, it will not fit. The intake mating flange is too narrow to cover the tall ports that the Vortec head uses. Here's a cutaway picture with a standard SBC intake mated to Fastburn heads. Fastburn heads are drilled with both standard SBC and Vortec bolt patterns.

The LT4 intake will not fit Vortec heads either. This is due to the Vortec bolt pattern being way too high on the head for the intake. The LT4 intake can be adapted to Fastburn heads because they are drilled for both standard and Vortec bolt patterns. So an LT4 intake would still require a bolt pattern change to std gen1. Some port matching on the LT4 intake will be required when using Fastburn heads.

Bummer- so I either need to convert to pre-Vortec heads or find another manifold. Thanks for the input

I would have to say you are correct. Bummer since it sounds like you already have both.

Scoggin Dickey makes a TPI base for Vortec heads that you could use with a TPI injection system. Or change to traditional heads & have the LT1 intake modified to work. It will not work without some mods.

Mercruiser also have a intake for TPI. Looks like a "tunnel ram"

Did a search on the net for it & all I can find is an EFI (different from OEM production) for a big block, nothing for small block.

Someone should put one on their car.

I had one of these but I sold it......

I had seen that intake on Ebay. Was it you selling it? I thought it was a custom piece but Mercruiser makes it?

I,t wasn't me selling it. I only had the lower/ base of it. It's a Mercruiser part. Take a call to some mercruiser dealer and ask if they have a used one. They replace them because it,s often starting leaking sea/ saltwater from the thermostat housing and they get heavily corroded. Thats no problem because the watwer passage is brass and you can easily repair the outside with Epoxy. The plenium, fuel rails, TB+++ are pieces that you easily can adapt.

Can someone post a picture, rather than a link? I don't need to join still another forum.....

I wouldn't mind having one myself. I saw one on Ebay & the guy wanted over a grand for it. I'd spend the money on a Super Ram intake or a Mini Ram from TPiS first.

Had a guy who used a spacer setup (I guess he fabbed his own) he had the stock Vortec bolt holes drilled and tapped for pipe plugs and redrilled it to both old and later 86 up bolt patern and he actually had the LT intake on it and said it ran as good as most replacements with Vortec heads.
I have an LT intake and intendto use it on my small inch mouse for my Monza, have been thinking hard on using 283 steel crank in a 350 block and building an actual 305 (302) for fun,,might even put a 5.0 type badge on the car.

The LT1 intake has holes for traditional small blocks, not the Vortec style bolt pattern. I have one if you need pics.

What did he plug, holes in the intake or the heads? The LT1 intake has holes for traditional small blocks, not the Vortec style bolt pattern.

The LT1 has 6 bolt holes but only the 2 outers are the same as a GEN 1 head.
The inners 4 need redrilling to suit.Check out the spacing on the 2 center ones either side of the GEN 1 exh riser;
LT1 holes are nearly 2" further apart.

Am I understanding this correctly, the user described adding a plate between the LT1 intake and head to essentially generate a matching port configuration; then drilled the two inboard Vortec screw holes..

Spacer also needed between the manifold and the block at the ends to seal the lifter gallery. Not sure what's going on with the pipe plug description

Yeah we plug the bolt holes on heads all the time with pipe plugs, refinish it lightly ,then redrill them.
and I talked to the uy with Vortecs and he said he used simple aluminum and counter sunk bolts and had studs in the plates,,,not sure of all mods he did but it looks just like the spacers used on tall deck bbc.
