I have an opportunity to pick up a 1982 Corvette IRS. Is it worth putting in my 64 chevelle wagon?? I dont plan on ground breaking Horsepower out of the engine, but Im guessing roughly 500hp. Can this rearend hold up to it, or will I have issues? My current rearen is a 373 12 bolt posi, would i be better off just putting in a fresh posi and runnin with it??

Is it a rear from a automatic Dana 36 (one bolt hole at the top center of the cover) or manual transmission Dana 44 (2 bolt holes at the top center of the cover)
The 36 will not live, the 44 might. Been there, done that, got T Shirts!

I would think the wagon's rear weight my be an issue, Being the vette is lighter! But some of the engineers on this site will surely chime in on this.

also another note..I intend on running ART Shockwaves instead of that giant "uni-spring"

Geometry isn't all that great on the C3 IRS. 2 links instead of 4 onthe C4.
All Corvette from 1980 to 1984 had Dana 36, even manuals.
Dana 44 came in 1985 and up manuals.
I ran 11's with my Dana 36 in my 84 vette 4+3 manual, never broke it, but eventually upgraded to a 44.
I did break the dinky ujoint strap bolts on my 1980 vette with a dana 36.

Actually most of the 64 wagon models are lighter, the heaviest wagon is only like 30lbs heavier.

I plan to do this install in my 56 Nomad. I will be transplanting the 502 and Tremec 5 speed out of my 67 Corvette. I have about 40,000 miles with this combination without any breakage. Tires in my setup are the weak link. If you plan to run at the drags with slicks or drag radials then opt for the Dana 44 or the F**d 9 ".
Good luck

I may take it down the track a couple times, but i got burnt out on rain delays at the strip... it was too frustrating. I just tore my race care down and put the entire runnig gear in my 2wd blazer..talk about a street pig, I have to cut it with c12 to run right...lol So it will mainly be a show car and weekend cruiser. Im going to do some measuring, if it can be done without a ton of narrowing and fab to the IRS I may do it, if it is too nasty Ill keep the Spicer 373 12 bolt posi in it..

I would stick with what you have over a C3 rear.... now if you can get your hands on a C-4 rear, I would go for it.
