Why not just cut the rubber off of the roloc holder?

You can't because of the way its made and the metal in it, it will break apart. Good question though.

strange my roloc tool had had the rubber worn off for quite a while and still works.

This is true and those 2'' are handy also.
I just went out and measured the one I use, and its 3/4'' in diameter.
Lately I have been using it along the floor support seam, it varies from 5/8'' to over an inch wide, and the smaller tool allows me to see what I'm doing a little better.
I know when I get done with one of these discs, theres very little waste.
