View Full Version : camaro vs. firebird pricing (your thoughts)

this is mainly about the 1st gen.
it's just don't understand why the price of camaros so much higher than the firebirds.you hardly ever see firebirds.at a car show you see a dozen camaros to one firebird.i don't know what the production numbers are for the two,but it seems that the firebird is more rare than a camaro which would usually mean a higher price, but it's the opposite.a paid $2000 for my 69 roller firebird and if it would have been a camaro,in the same condition,i would probably have spent $4000-$5000.
so why do you guys think that the camaros are more expensive?is it being chevrolet, the style,or what?do you think that the price of the firebirds will ever come close to that of the camaros?
btw,i'm not including the rare cars like 69 trans am,zl1 camaro,copo,yenko,etc.. this is just for your normal base v8's and ss,rs cars.
let me hear your thoughts on this.

Camaros look better. Plain and simple.
Now i think its funny about the 4th gens, firebirds (T/A) are more then camaro.

I agree its all mostly on looks.
My take is this on looks,
67-68 its a tie for me, I like both of them
69 would go towards the camaros
70-73 its close, but leaning a bit towards the firebirds and T/A's
74-76 definate firebirds and T/A's. No big bumpers for me.
77-78 firebirds and T/A's
79-81. camaros
82-92 its kind of a toss up again.
93 till the end. firebirds and trans ams.

74-77 Firebirds

82-till the end, neither one

i've always been a firebird person.although a have owned 2 camaros.to me,the firebird has a better look to them.especially the 67-68.the only thing that bothers me about the 69 firebird is the black rubber piece at the nose.but it looks like prodigy has that figured out.
i think if people started seeing firebirds done up nice like podigy's, they would start to be more popular.we'll see.

I agree with jonnyc. The more we see them "done up", the higher the demand we will see for these cars, ie: Prodigy, BAN2 & 3. Recently, there is much more aftermarket support for the 2nd gens. as the 1st gens. are just so expensive.
Styling tastes aside, I think the Camaro is perceived to be to be the performer of the two, while the Firebird was considered more luxury. (at least to those that have not driven a hot RA4 or 455)
Considering all that, and the fact that the demographic of people
buying these cars now, are for the most part Baby boomers and mid-life crisis guys, (I'm both LOL) and not necessarily "car guys", (that's me too) and are driving up prices at auctions etc.
Personaly, I hope that Firebirds don't cacth up to Camaro pricing as I will probably want another one, and don't plan to sell the one I have.

amen,
hopefully these cars will stay under the radar of auctions like Barret Jackson... then maybe the regular car guys can still afford them.

Yup, Barrett Jackson is kinda ruining it for the hobbyists. Cause now every joe blow and his mom thinks there sitting on a gold mine if they have a first gen.

i paid a pretty change for my Camaro.. but it was worth it seeing that i didnt have to replace not one panel..
now if i had a choice id like a 2nd gen firebird.. they look pretty raw. but hell a 2nd gen Camaro is also.. hahahah

i have both a 68 firebird and a 68 camaro , i prefere the camaro due to looks and resale ability , far as the firebirds cant seem the issue with its resale ability ....but in car sales it is in the eyes of the beholder and how deep his pockets are for that special car he wants ,
far as price i payed 2500.00 for a firebird driver and 2500.00 for a wreck of a camaro with half ass body work done on it

I was going to write an original post but that ^^^ pretty much sums it up, I STRONGLY agree with the 79-81 Camaros looking superior :) (to everything in 79-81 mind you :usa: but I'm a tad partial)
Although I do think that 4th Gen Firebirds tend to take the cake with their more aggresive design to the plain hooded 4th Gen Camaros, I'd still say the 98-02 SS is one slick looking machine! The hood and fancier spoiler finish the car compared to the Z28.
As far as 1st Gens are concerned, I see why Camaros are worth more obviously because of the Chevrolet name plate, but WHY WHY WHY people would go as far to clone, or completely shread original Firebirds into a "Camaro" is beyond me, I can only imagine they are banking off the people who buy them and either don't know or care but a hybrid 1st Gen with an identity crisis would be worth about a nickel to me! :(

I think a lot of people have said it pretty well. I will say that 70-73 TA's are by far the best of the early 2nd gens. I cannot wait to build my 73 TA clone! Heehee!

:dunno:
It's been like that for quite a few years now.
I was fond of 1st gens until that started happening.
Now I just sit back and laugh while they all try to make clones
and sell them off as real deals for high $$$. I like early 2nd gens
better anyways now. The best looking Camaro of all time to me is the Baldwin Motion phase III's.
This is what I made my 1978 look like with sidepipes.

I disagree though, I think the Camaro's outshine the T/A's all day long. (except 4th gens)
T/A's are plagued by the Smokey and Bandit popularity IMO. To me, I wouldn't own one
just because it's like an actor whose career suffers from 1 character role that was too successful.
Camaro's are more unique to me.
Reminds me of that scene in Billy Madison where he pulls up at the high school
in his late 70's T/A thinking he's all cool.....lmao

I agree that the first gen values are high for unrestored, original, plain jane models. Barrett has turned up the dollars for the immaculate pieces. I recall a plain jane 68 went thru B-J in 2006 or 2007 for 8 or 9k. As soon as you mention original big block, yenko, or even tribute car, look out.
I was bored the other day so I screen scraped the 08 B-J car list from their site and made custom lists by year, Novas, Corvettes, etc. The bottom of each page has the list type.
Here is a link for reference. About 45 first gen Camaros.

Well, basically it comes down to supply and demand. The Camaro is more desirable to the enthusiast, and the reason most likely is appearance since performance differences are essentially a non-issue.
Try selling a late model Fox Body Mercury Capri. Won't be worth 50 cents on the dollar to a nice Fox car.

I've never liked the Camaro, 69-72 were the best IMHO though. 67,68 were boring. Firebirds were much nicer 67-68
69 T/A was nice but to low of production so I'd give that to Camaro, but 70-78 T/A's were sweet, after that I didn't care for either Firebird or Camaro.
I've owned 6 FGF, 3 now, and 1 third gen, I like the fact FGF are under the radar so far.
I have a Pontiac 428 in one of my 68 birds, and seeing a BBC in a Maro does nothing for me. But beating it does :)
But then again, that's why they build both brands to begin with.
Number for number, not special stuff, I think the Firebird usually out performed the Camaro. I never lost to one. Like to dig up some old data and check that though. But line up comparable engines and see.
Base OHC-6 vs base 6, did chevy even make a HP 6 like Pontiacs Sprint 6?
HP 326 vs 327
HP 355 vs 350
HP 400 vs 396
HP 428 vs 427
HP 455 vs 454
Across the board Pontiac will have more torque, which is what counts on the street anyway. But then again, I'm a little bias.

I personally haven't owned a Camaro....yet.
But my dad had a mid 70's and I just remember the dash rattling and thinking how "cheap" it seemed.
My first car was a '76 Bird and I just remeber thinking how much nicer the interior seemed. Went on to own a '71 Bird and regret seling that one.
I have become big fan of 1st gen Camaros over my 1st gen Bird. For me it's the bumper as a front end treatment that is the downer now.
With a 67- 68 Camaro just seems like you have more options, bumper or not, and I think they look super clean wirthout one.
Secondly, no offense but Chevy parts are cheap and plentiful.
You have so many more aftermarket companies making parts for the SBC compared to the Pontiac.
Have you ever compared Classic Industries catologs?
Lay the Firebird one next to the Camaro one and compare part numbers on interchangable parts.
Camaro book has cheaper prices.
go figure.

Yeah, but Camaros at car shows are like belly buttons, everyone has one and they pretty much all look alike.
Firebirds are like Boobies, only half as many have them, most are nice and all are different. :)

that's what i'm talking about.now i know most people like the 1st gen camaro better than the firebird and it's a supply and demand thing, but chevy parts are so much cheaper and easier to get than pontiac.do a search on ebay for 67-69 camaros, there is close to 250 for sale compared to only 50 firebirds.it seams like there are plenty of cars out there for the demand.
i guess on the bright side,if the firebirds were the same price i probably wouldn't have my project 69.

Well, my thing is this. If you like an "off" brand which is the same body or frame, then go for it - parts and vehicle are cheaper. There are tons of examples of "A" vehicles and "B" vehicles with the same frame and basic mechanicals which are a bargain in comparison.

i prefur the 68 Firebird. engine parts dont cost as mutch as some years ago . from 500 hp and up the price is the same as shevy. in less then5 years 5 afther marked blocks have arived and 7 afther marked heads.
575 ci on poncho engine is no problem today . as for firebird parts go Ames not classic industries ore year one..i do like the camaro a lot but the stijling of a firebird is just plain simple awesome ,(69 transam is the bisenis) . but thats a personal thing. about the camaro every swinning ..k in the field hase one , time wil come that the camaro marked is flooded. then the firebird will stand out... last but not least parts availebilety made the camaro more ecspensife to buy, but cheaper in maintinence visa virsa with the Firebird. but thats changing now due to the booming afthermarked on pontiac these days
.over here in the Netherlands the Firebird and transam always out sold the camaro ....
