hey guys, the monoplate under my lh-side leaf spring broke in half, diagonally. i was driving 5 mph around a corner when it happened thank goodness. so now the shock just hangs next to the wheel and the rear is only attached to the leaf.

has this happened to anyone else? i'm replacing both plates.

i have hotchkis leafs and edelbrock ias shocks. the u-bolts that came with the hotchkis leafs were swapped for belltech truck lowering ones because the moser axletubes are wider.

also i noticed that both sides had a small gap inboard between the plates and the perches on the housing. is that norma at all? i had my rear installed by precision in san bruno.

did it break from hole to hole? Ive seen it happen with a mono to multi spring swap without the proper perch..

hole to hole as seen in the pics, i've also included a pic of the 'good' side. i bought the rear for multi leafs, it has multi leaf perches, but it still doesnt seem like it fits. any ideas?

I believe having a space as in picture 3 may put all the pressure on the plates, If properly mounted it should spread the forces evenly between the plate, u bolts and rear end housing perch.

I have no proof of this but after several failures as you had I think there is something to my theory.

Those things look thin!!!!!!!!! Get some reproduction plates from years one, those things are thick.

I agree... I see nothing wrong with your passenger side setup. Having that space shouldn't be a problem as long as all ubolts are torqued to the same number.

The driver was probably a casting issue... a hairline fracture after 40 years will easily rust and crack like that.

You replaced with a multileaf rear and springs, but I think those plates are from the mono setup (?) which were made to originally make up the distance of the mutli setup - in affect putting your shocks mounts further down than they should be. Get a set of repros for multileafs and you should be good to go-
