No gasket... just RTV...

make sure its a sealer for gear oil. Mopar makes a great grey RTV that seals real nice. I believe Ford and GM do too.

Permatex 'Ultra Gray' is used by many shops I know. I put it on my old 89 4 runner @ 275K miles, and when I sold it @370K miles, it still hadn't leaked (yes, of course I changed it).

I'd suggest the Ultra High Temp stuff.

You could also try a gasket from Lubelocker. It's a steel shim gasket with a special coating. I have one on each of my cars and they work great.

Lubelocker looks like the answer to me. I'll look into that tomorrow.
Related question: Anybody got an install tip for the studs? It seems to me that I had seepage past the studs that hold the 3rd member on. I knocked the studs back out to clean up the mess of a gasket I used last time (which worked fine), but I'm wondering what you guys think about using some permatex on the spline area of the studs.

Maybe you could try some red loc-tite. Remember those hamonic damper repair kits that used a ultra thin steel tube that slid over the hub of the damper so the timing cover seal would have a new surface to seal on? A little tube of red loc-tite came in the kit to hold it in place and to seal it.

Most any of the grey rtvs will work great for oil/gear oils.

I was thinking of loc-tite too. Seems like it's worth a try.
I've done black RTV, and I've done a gasket. The gasket worked better, since the RTV method leaked, but it was hell to get off the housing. It bonded with the housing so tightly I had to sand it off.
I'm hoping this lube-locker product will work better.

The studs all leak. That's why Ford put the copper washers behind the nuts. The washers stopped the leaks.

I picked up the last Lubelocker gasket in Orlando just now. The local speed shop is pretty frustrated with Lubelocker. I guess they've been on backorder for a long time...

I don't use the washers. I just put some RTV on the back of the nut before I put it on.
