Well, what type of look are you going for? If you like the big billet look, then a nice set of 19x8 front and 20x10 backs would look pretty killer.
I would suggest definitely not doing anything less than 17" if you plan on disc brake upgrades, etc. Plus tire availability in anything less is deminishing.
Here's a few styles to consider in the Rushforth line:

BLAH BLAH... 19"s and 20"s are lame if your going for performance. Unless of course your strictly going for the Pro-Touring "look" and then that may be your own personal route...
I personally suggest 18"s which I've got for my 1980 Z28.
If your looking for a "safe" 18" size and offset which is almost sure to bolt right on with no rubbing, I recommend going for a 18x8" w/ 245/40/18 with 4.75" of backspacing, and 18x10" w/ 295/35/18 with 5.75" of backspacing. Now running a 10" in the back will most likely require you to flatten the "seat belt hump" which juts out into the otherwise clean rear wheel wells of our 2nd Gens, and then of course rolling the inner fender lip to prevent it from slicing into your tires on big bumps or if your car is lowered later on.
The combo listed above is pretty fool proof and 18x8 and 18x10 are size that are widely available in a variety of OEM wheels(including euro wheels), your typical 5 spoke TT2 & American Racing style, and then of course your higher end or at least higher priced wheels such as those from the retailers that have posted above.
& if your looking for more extensive information strictly about 2nd Gens you should join www.NastyZ28.com where I'm also a member, its constantly busy and you can almost ALWAYS find an answer or solution to your 70-81 2nd Gen questions.

What's your budget like? unlimited I have plastic haha. Seriously don't want to spend $2,000 on rims so the fikse and budniks are out of the question. I am lookin more at the American Racing price range...

DriversInc... Do those RatedX's come in 18x8" w/ 245/40/18 with 4.75" of backspacing, and 18x10" w/ 295/35/18 with 5.75" of backspacing? And what would a set run with decent tires... No need for pirelli's on my daily rollers.

If you end up seeking American Racing wheels let me know, I was originally looking into a set of TT2 "Classics" as they call them or the CL205 (before going for euro style wheels). The CL205 is esentially a 18" version of the TT D' thats currently on my car.
The seller I was going to get them through and custom made with that exact backspacing above as the CL205 is a custom order wheel, part of the reason you don't see it on EVERY car like the standard polished version. Anyhow If I had ordered them they would have only cost $1183.00 even SHIPPED to my door and I'd dare you to find an offer that good, even the "wholesalers" at Carlisle said the best they could do was $1400.00 or so but that didn't include shipping.
Anyhow I haven't done business with the company buy their eBay feedback (Sport Truck or something like that is their eBay ID) was good the last time I checked, and apparently their able to keep costs so low since they don't run a retail location. Their # is 1-877-795-8473 so long as it hasn't changed and a man by the name of Wayne helped me out with the quote but they only carry a handful of brands.

No problem, I sent you a PM with a quote. Let me know what you think, and we can move forward with an order. Those offsets are not a problem at all. Thank you.

Oh and NastyZ28 Admin Finally wrote me back, it wouldn't let me sign up because I use a free email account!!! They are fixing it for me though.

http://myworld.ebay.com/sport-trucker <<-- thats the seller, as you can see most people are satisfied although 98.1% feedback isn't stupendous compared to the thousands of perfect sellers on eBay, but they'll surely get you the best price on AR wheels even though most aren't listed.
If you decide to go for something different than that or the BMW wheels I mentioned, I'm sure Drivers Inc from above is willing to help you out and recommend a few other choices that'll work for ya, they seem to be rather well regarded amongst the members here .

Not that it really matters but a set of Fikse's would be a steal for 2k. I think they are pretty much 1k each. Not too sure about what Budniks cost but I have never really considered them on the same "level" as Fikse.

While I don't think 19s or 20s look particularly good on older vehicles, there are more performance options out there in 19" tires now. Vipers and Vettes both come with 19s from the factory and you can get stickier tires in that wheel size now vs a couple years ago.
I've been running an 18/19 combo on a C5 for a couple years. When I first swapped to 19s, the Pilot Sports were the only game in town. They're not a great tire, but now that the PS2 has so many 19" sizes available, it's an option for those running regular street tires (not R compounds).

I agree with you there are definitely many tire choices for those rim diameters.

I think that unless you get the right rim style like the other guy on this forum with 20's ...it will look weird. you have to develop a theme and stick to it. only certain cars can pull off the big rim look. i'm not saying don't do it, but think about it more ahead of shelling out some cash $$$.

Front and rear 17x9 6" b/sp 275/40 front rubs sway bar at full lock and rear is too close to springs, no rubbing, will need 1" wheel spacers to work right.
