Well I thought it was about time I got my project posted on here.

This is my 71 Torino Formal Top I started with a quite rusty car but over the past summer I have got a lot of the major rust repair work done and added sub frame connectors.

plans for this car so far

1: Ford AOD tras (that I got free) I plan on driving it a lot so I wanted the OD.

2: global west coilovers and tubular control arms and anti roll kit in the rear or something like that, I may try fabing some things myself.

3: fuel cell

4: 6 point cage

5: may go EFI at some point but will be carbed to start.

This is my first full resto I have done and I take a lot of pride in the fact that I have done 99% of the work. I always try to trade or sell parts to get the parts I need and to keep the cost down. At this point I have less than 3,000 into the car including the purchase price.

A lot of my background is in short track racecars I have worked on my relatives cars a lot over the years and I have a general love for all types of auto racing. I like the street fighter look and the Nascar vibe idea. I am thinking aluminum rear spoiler and chin spoiler as well as rear window straps and front window tabs I may even put a Nascar style exhaust on it that exit in front of the rear wheels.

It has a 351w that seemed to run good when I got it going I am planning on going though the heads and give it A good cleaning and new gaskets before it goes back in but I am a long way from that.

Here are some pictures

Nice project! My best friend in high school had a 71 Torino GT. His dad bought it new and gave it to him when he turned 16 back in 77. We had a blast in it. The nose got real light at 140+ mph. Last I knew his dad still had it. It was in need of another rebuild. My friend has been into mopars for the last decade or so. His dad has another 71 GT that he shows.

Looks like you're doing very nice work. Keep posting pics!

My very first car was a '70 GT. I bought it in '84 for $1000. The body was nearly perfect and it was dark metalic blue with white interior. There was no engine or trans and I ended up building a 429 (my first engine build) backed by a C6 and a 9" rear w/ 3.90 gears.

Thanks guys

Now that it is winter time here in MI I don't get out to the barn much since it doesn't have heat yet but I do work on some of the smaller things in the basement like parts of the grill that I restored last winter. This year I started working on the GT tail pannel I got a few months back I am planning to light the hole thing with LED's since the original lights are not that bright and the middle section was not lit originaly it is just a reflector.

I am also working on a model of my car that shows how it may look here is a few pics of how it started out it is almost done but I won't show finished pics till it is. I have built models for a long time and thought why not do a model insted of a rendering. First off I had to change a fastback to a Formal top at the time there was no formal top body of corse now there is a resen body kit that just came out.

Wow, nice work. Those 70/71 Torinos are one of the worst for rust. I like your idea to go with a stock-car look. Good to see more Fords being saved!!

Well I got the model finished I am not to sure about the dog dish caps but I like them for the sleeper/Street Fighter look. I put the rear window straps on like Nascar racecars had in the day and the front and rear spoilers have the strut braces like current day Nascar.

That is sweet just the kind of idea I was going for in fact I have been thinking about putting the C.I.D. on the hood in gloss black over the flat back so it would show up as a gost image. A lot of nascars of the time had it on the hood around this time.

Yeah, the Torino Nascar bug has gotten into PT.com regularly, no one has seemed to really go full bore quite yet. It was nice when Steve at PHR started his Fairlane, but some us really hoped it would head the Nascar direction more.

BTW, here is the original thread where I did that photochop, from way back in August 2005: https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9674&highlight=torino

I thought I should post some updates since it has been a wile. I don't get much done in the winter time here in MI I don't have heat in my barn yet.

I try to work on things I can do inside like my gage cluster that I am just about done with I got one that was in sad shape off e-bay I needed it to switch mine over to non-AC the only difference is the face trim and the selector switch the donor cluster had. Here are some pics I also found an original clock.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/03/cluster12206003-1.jpg

I also got the non-AC under dash heater box and such.

A friend of mine had a 71 torino like that, it was pale yellow with a flat black hood, 351 and some 14" 500s. It had a nice original black bench seat interior. I liked it alot, too bad somebody etched the rear window with a lion head.

sweet buildup and i think you have some killer modeling skills. i did one of my 69 mustang coupe but it's not near as cool as yours. i had kind of a suggestion on the wheels though, i like your black steelie with dog dish idea on the model but and it would look sweet on the real car, only i'd use dodge cop car wheels and ford caps to give it more a slightly newer nascar look. the cop wheels are 15x7 with 6 oval shaped holes and are one of the coolest "rally type" wheels ever made that will a ford IMO.

i've got a set that i want to eventually put on a 69 ranchero that i plan to hopefully build someday, if i can find one cheap enough in decent shape. i'll probably swap the 5.0/aod out of my 86 town car daily driver into it and convert the non-HO 5.0 to HO specs but otherwise i'd pull it out of the linc and put it straight into the 'chero and it would be my new daily driver. of course before i do that i first have sell my 69 mustang and get started building my 69 cougar.

MZ 500

Hey that is a good idea with the wheels right now I have stock
14" x 7" wheels and a nice set of caps it would be ez-er to find tires for 15".

Here are a few up dates I got a little done on the rear trunk lip that needed repair it still needs work but its looking better.

Thanks it was a PITA but the only other way to fix it is to get a cut patch from a doner but all the ones I have seen around me are just as bad. I have found this with most things on this car there is not much for aftermarket panels out there but thats ok I am learning how to fab things better all the time.

Great work, I'm in danger of entering your world of no aftermarket support soon. My GF keeps pushing to buy a classic english car as our next project. Like your project it'll be fun but I know that just about anything that it needs will either have to be made or adapted from something else.

Great to see another Nascar inspired build, I think its a great way give a street car a tough race car look. As another option for wheels, what I did was got a set of 16inch steelies re-hooped so they are now 17x9 on the rear and 17x8 on the front.

Just curious, do you already have the front suspension for this car? I have one that I bought a few years back that I am no longer able to use. I could make you a killer deal if you are interested. I paid 2600.00 when I bought it, and it is awesome! If you are interested, email me at [email protected]. It is made specifically to fit your car.

I have been working on the 9" housing getting it ready for paint and got the first coat on tonight. I had it sand blasted and used a little filler where the pitting was bad and I also used a textured paint to make it look uniform. The third member housing got painted to I think the red is not dark enough but I like the way it looks so it stays. The sway bar and brackets also got hit with silver.

Finally made some real progress on the Torino I got The front floors back in and started Patching some other areas. This feels like a big step for me since the floors where the first thing I cut out over 3 years ago. I also made filler strips to go along the sub frame connectors since I had over a 1/4" gap in some areas. I opened the gap to a even 1" along both sides so it would look uniform from the underside I still need to do the right side. I also need to patch some holes where the PO had mounted Bucket seats and a consol from a T-Bird The trans tunnel is also a mess where they mounted the shifter.

Took some time but I can now move on to the next project area. I fabed the pans my self I know you can buy them but the toe boards didn't go up as far as I needed them to plus I was able to hide the main weld seam under the subframe rail. Also there is less the $50 in materials this way and we won't count the time https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I have not got into the suspension much on this car yet but I am sticking with leaf springs in the back but I will be adding a sway bar and Cal-tracs. Up front I want to do away with the stock power stearing setup and put a rack in but other than that I have not got into the front much yet.

I had some brackets made for my rack and pinon swap I still need to get some other part together. Its nice working at a tool shop with 10 CNC machines just outside the office door!

Really happy to see this project is not dead!

Whose rack is that? I take it you're fabbing up your own mounts that will tie into the existing crossmember? What kind of travel side-to-side can you get? One of the big issues with retrofitting racks to our cars seems to be the fact that the steering knuckles built into the spindles are too long, thus limiting the turning radius when used with racks.

Keep up the good work!

Yes I will be making my own brackets to mount it.
Its a mid 90s GM rack Corsica, Beretta maybe some others. I have talked to a fellow Torino owner that has used the same rack for his conversion and he did say that it doesn't have as much turning radius but it didn't bother him to much. I did find where someone modified one of these racks to get a little more stroke out of it but of course I can't find it now!:hand:

Glad to see someone else doing a formal roof, I have similar plans for this car but I'm worried under that terrible yellow is a lot of bondo and some rust. (Pennsylvania car) Check out Street or Track suspension, that full floater rear with watts link is pretty bada**

Whose rack kit is that?

The rack setup is of my own design the rack itself is from a mid 90s Chevy Beretta it is used in a few other gm cars of the time. The main reason I used this rack is because it moves in the center not the ends. I work at a tool shop as a Designer so I modeled up the Aluminum Clamp brackets and had one of our CNC guys make them up. The mounting brackets I made up myself out of 3/16 steel and they utilize existing Steering Linkage mounting points on the frame. I still need to make the bracket to attach the Tie rods and I need to get a piece steering shaft and two universals to connect the steering column. I have also modified the column, removed the column shift mechanism, removed the rag joint plate and added a bearing at the base of the Column.

Very cool. Have you checked to see if you can run the wheels from lock to lock?

I ask as a friend had a rack system on hi '67 Fairlane and the range was so limited that even pulling out his driveway onto the street was a 3 point turn.

Could you share the distance between the frame rails on your '71? My guess is that it's wider than then 66-69 cars, but I'd like to know that.

Thanks!

The frame rails are wider on the 70 71 Torino, I haven't checked on this thread in a few months if you still need that measurement let me know? I have talked to a fellow 71 Torino owner that is using this rack (he is where I got the info on my setup) He told me he is not getting full lock to lock but only notices a problem getting into tight parking spots he has to swing it wide, he is however happy with the stability at higher speeds over the stock setup he is currently using stock tie rods but plans to go to Heim joints and possibly moving the points closer together where they connect to the rack.

That's ok, since we now know that the frame rails are wider, I think i'll wait and see how your project goes and it could possibly be adapted to earlier cars.

I believe a rack would be more stable, as most of the recirculating ball systems tend to get worn right in the middle of travel, thus have some slop when going straight down the road. I think you're onto the right idea by moving the inner locations closer to the centerline of the car. The added length should give you more options on length.

Happy to see the project is still alive!

You are a great fabricator man. I would love all the specs on that rack, like everything I would need to pick up or make to put in my 71 torino GT. But I don't have access to a c.n.c like you did. As for my car it is all tore down right now cuz I'm also restoring mine...136438136440136439136441136442
