View Full Version : So...C5 brakes + ATS spindle + Torq Thrusts = HELP

Ok so I've had these spindles just sitting here for.....oh, somewhere around 6-7 months, I believe. I've been trying to find a setup that will fit behind the 16" wheels. I know, I know, 17's would fit perfectly and have more tire options, but even for some cheap wheels ($500) and decent tires ($600), that's $1100-ish. Add to that the brake kit from ATS (I forget the name but it's like $800). About 2 grand, plus I'd have a spare set of wheels that would be too small to use (apparently Torq Thrusts aren't selling on ebay, so I doubt I'd be able to sell the wheels).

Or, I could get the "kit" from SSBC. The problem is that their "kit" is just the rotors, calipers, and basically all the stuff at the wheels. I'd still need a master cylinder and proportioning valve. Buying all that from SSBC still comes out to around 2 grand.

So I'm trying to see if there's another way around the interference problem. I've come up with two possible solutions:

1) Get some thinner calipers and hope they clear.

Are there any upgraded calipers for C5 brakes that aren't as thick as the stock pieces? I figure I can get the kit from ATS or the one that's for sale here in the forums and just get new calipers for a few hundred bucks and be done with it. Is it possible?

2) Just grind the hell out of that stupid lip on the inside of the wheels. Would this be safe to do? Why the hell is that there anyway? Structural integrity? I've never seen it on any other wheels.

Help guys, I'm sick of 4 wheel drums. :(

Try calling Noel at touring classics, or Frank at Prodigy customs. Touring classics does C5 brake conversions. Frank has the GP superstore and maybe has something in the Wilwood line that would work. Also Kore 3 maybe another option.

Tyler had posted that he has a bracket to allow 12" rotors which would fit inside a 16". Would this work for you or are the rims themslves the problem. I too have 16" rims and don't want to buy all new rims/tires.

Well SSBC makes a 12" kit that will fit. Really, the 12.75" rotors fit, and the calipers do, too. The top of the caliper was about 1/4" from the wheel, IIRC. The problem is that Torq Thrusts, for some friggin reason, have a huge lip/bulge thing around the inner edge of the wheel, and the front face of the caliper hits this lip. I remember the calipers had fins that could be ground down. I don't have the calipers on hand, so I don't know how tall the fins were, but it might be possible to grind down the fins and then maybe grind the inside lip of the wheel, too.

Any more tips/advice/opinions?

I have C5 front brakes and I need to run a 1/4" spacer so the caliper doesn't rub the wheel. I'm running 17" TTII's at the moment. Getting those brakes inside a 16" wheel will be tough, but maybe there's a way.

BTW, I may have some TTII's for sale soon. I don't know if the sizes will work for you, but I'll throw them out there. I have a total of 6 wheels so here it is:

(2) 17X9.5" w/ 5.5" backspacing

(2) 17X9.5" w/ 6.5" backspacing

(2) 17X11" w/ 7.75" backspacing

The ones with the 5.5" backspace are for the rear of a stock wheel tub 1st gen, the 17X11's are for a mini-tubbed car with stock-width rearend. The 6.5" backspace wheels were off the front of my car with a Wayne Due subframe. I will post these in the for sale section when my new wheels arrive.
