I'm kinda curious to see who all plays on this forum...
So lets see
-How long have you been playing?
-Whats made you want to start playing?
-What kind of guitars do you play?
-How often do you play?
-What do you like to play?
__________________________________________________
-I have been playing for a little over a year.
-I always wanted to learn but thought it would be out of my league. Until I saw a good friend of mine pick it up and started thinking if he can pick it up I know I can.
-I own two guitars right now, one a crappy strat knock-off and a really nice Seagull acoustic guitar. But on Christmas day I'm lucky enough that my parrents are giving me a Gibson Les Paul Studio.
-I play everyday. Sometimes I mess around with just the stuff I know now. But I'm usually working with my books I have to try and learn more.
-Since I'm pretty new to the whole thing I'm trying to learn alot of diffrent chords and various strumming patterns. But I'm a huge fan of CCR/John Fogerty so I have also been working on a few of his songs. But I do know a pretty good amount of different riffs and whatnot that I mess with.
This has become a long post so I'm gonna end it now. So who else plays???

My cousin in law plays, my daughter has the yearning, when she sees a band she dosesn't care about the music she watches the musicians ,

I own a guitar (I play left handed). I've screwed around enough to be able to play scales, and some simple melodies. I've been playing for 8-10 months.
I suck at chords, though I've been trying to get better.

I started plaing about 2 years ago after i had surgery durring my recovery. I have a ibanez acoustic that i learned on, and my electric is a Godin SDxt, same company that makes seagull acoustics. I've got most of the chords down, but i've got a way to go as far as picking is concerned. I love all mustic from clapton to van halen to the shins, Ive tried to write a bit as well, but first I'm gunna concentrate on graduating college in may

I've been playing almost everytday for 20 years (since 8th grade)
I've got a beautiful Ibanez Prestige RG, a 50's reissue Fender Strat and an Ovation elite acoustic.
Amps are really my thing...I try to find a guitar that's comfortable, then a good amp will take it to the next level.
Right now I've got a Mesa Boogie Mark IV...they're hard to dial in at first, but once you get it, it's a monster.
I grew up playing Van Halen type stuff, but will play anything that's fun.
Trying to get a band together right now...
Fast cars and loud guitars!!! Rock on!!!

-Use to take lessons back in Junior High (about 30 years ago). Now I just play WITH my guitar, but am not a player by any stretch of the imagination.
-Always loved music, and my brother was a drummer, sis played piano...thought we could be the Partidge family...LOL
-Just like my garage full of cars, I got a collection of about 6;
3 Gibson Montana Specials (acoustic custom shop limited edition stuff)
1 Washburn Acoustic/electric Craig Chaquiso model
1 G&L ASAT custom (Telecaster)
and my very fist Epiphone electric.
-I play with them maybe once a month. I really need to get more serious about doing it more often and learning new stuff.
-Jazz and finger style or country type riffs

So John, If I get the timing right ,you set down the amps on your welder and started cranking the amps on a guitar?
If you pick up the guitar like you did your welder, you will be in the music business in about 2yrs:bananna2:
You can be the next Jeff Beck and build cars and play guitars :fingersx: or will you start to build guitars and play cars :dunno:

I've been playing for roughly twenty years.
-Whats made you want to start playing?
Hmmm The same thing as any other kid... I wanted to be a jukebox hero. :)
-What kind of guitars do you play?
I mostly play an Ibanez acoustic that was my second guitar (I was 12). I used to play electrics (a Les Paul and a Peavey wannabe Strat), but sold those off years ago.
-How often do you play?
Not much anymore. Maybe every couple months anymore.
-What do you like to play?
My taste has changed a lot over the years. I've moved from playing rock/metal to blues and jazz. Does this mean that I'm getting old? HELL NO!!!

Thats awsome! How long was your band together?
From '90 to '98! We got signed by a little indy label called Metalblade and soon thereafter got signed by Warner Bros. Our first Euro tour was opening for Nirvana when "Smells like Teen Spirit" came out. Complete mayhem! LOL! Did a back to back and toured with some friends of ours that met us on the end of the Nirvana tour and we toured with them. They're band was call The Cramps.
If anyone is interested I still have all the Anvil flight approved travel cases if any of you foresee touring in your future! LOL!
Here's what I play out of now and some of the gear I still have left:
Line 6 Amp Modeler w/ Peavey 240 watt stereo amp. I used to play this with 2 Marshall cabinets. One on each side of the stage so that I could use the stereo effect. Pretty trippy sounding!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/12/PICT00041-1.jpg
Ibanez AW200. Not a bad acoustic for the money. A little bright sounding but it rings pretty good and has good sustain for an acoustic.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/12/PICT00012-1.jpg
Jerry Jones Danelectro Replica. I used to use this to layer the Les Paul sound in the studio. I'd double track it so that I'd get the nice bright, ringy tones of the Danelectro layered on top of the warm, round, sustainy(is that a word?) tones of the Les Paul. Learned that from Jimmy Page!

See what I mean about "essential talent"? I don't got it. I can barely scratch out the riff from "Smoke on the Water", and you guys are talking about "bright", "sustainy", and other such stuff.
That's discouraging. Sigh. I need to practice more, I guess.

Just keep at it JP. A few months ago I would have not really got that too. It's just one of those things you have to invest time into. After reading a few guitar books, really paying attention to a few friends I have that play, and tons of messing around/practice I'm starting to get it(I think!?)
Man I cant wait to get my new Gibson. I love my acoustic but I just cant wait to start to really dig into eletric guitars(my cheap knock-off only sounds decent because of my nice fender amp).
Edit: wanted to add a picture of the guitar I'm getting

I bought 2 guitars a little over a year ago for my son and I. I want him to learn an instrument and I thought it would be fun to learn along with him. His is a Yamaha acoustic and I have a Fender acoustic. I haven't taken him for the lessons yet but I took a few at a local shop around my house. I didn't get far into it though and haven't attempted to play in awhile. I guess I just got too many irons in the fire these days.

I've been playing for 7 years now,
it all started with a Guns n' Roses/Metallica cover band.
I've had several Les pauls and a SG, but now own a
Tradition Les Paul with EMG pickups.
Gone through Marshalls, Mesa Rectifiers, Rocktron Prophesy rack
but have ended up on a Engl Savage 120 and a Engl Invader 150.
Great metal amps. The search for great sound is over.
Been in a melodic Hardrock/Metal band for 2 years now
we have about 20 own songs.
We are going on tour as soon as we find a decent singer.

-Whats made you want to start playing? I allways wanted to as a kid - just could not afford it - until I aid for the lessons at the age 19.
-What kind of guitars do you play? I have a 1978 Les Pual Deluxe - very similar to the one John has. I still have the mini humbuckers though. Also have a 06 R4 Les Paul that is a Cloud Nine that is a chambered version of the Jeff Beck Blow By Blow Les Paul.
-How often do you play? At least 3 times a week sometimes an hour a day - just depends on my mood.
-What do you like to play? ZZ top, Led Zepplin, Joe Bonamassa, Cream, any old Blues.

My old neighbor's band was on Metalblade. He hated them, said they were getting ripped off by the label, etc. Did you see any of that?
No not really, we weren't on the label long enough to get ripped off but I have heard stories from others that were with them for multiple albums and they all pretty much had the same view of the label but then again, it's a record label! They're all like that!
Perfect example, when Warner Bros. signed us I had to go into the accounting office to speak to the account executive that was going to be handling our account. A friend of mine that had been on Metalblade and also had gotten signed by Warner Bros the year before just happened to walk into the waiting area where I was. He was all excited because his band had just sold 3 million records(Johnny Rzeznik from the Goo Goo Dolls!) and this was the first check he was going to be picking up from the sales(Iris). We were talking about what he should buy with his first check, etc. He got called in and 10 minutes later he walked back into the waiting area all pissed off. Metalblade had back charged the band for the records that they had done previously with them every little charge they could think of along with some that were pretty shady and questionable. The statement said the band owed the label $160,000.00! Can you believe that? After selling 3 million records?

Well i starte taking lessons while in tech school back in 85-87 at don Lynn Studios in speedway, won a KMD double stack with amp head to run them (friend still is storeing them right now, he is building new house and cant take them with, so as of next January they get to come home. His house is going to be huge and very energy efficient so its taking a long time to do.
My stack got signed by Bon Jovi back when they came to Indy on tour.
I havent had any guitar for 7 or 8 yrs, been looking for a new one as I sold my old Lotus Less Paul copy, had DeMarzio pickups, pots and switches after everything started failing, andrewired with some platinum/silver wiring I found in an old harness at a boat grave yard, came from a sub wiring harness.
I had the nut filed down perfect and had D'Addario XLRed 008s on it and never got a buzz from it.
Also had a KMD GS 18 practice amp (thats how I got entered forthe contest, bought the small amp).
Was back stage with them richie couldnt stop playing my guitar and tried to buy it twice, but then I think he was a little drunk.
I have tried to find another amp and guitar like I had but to no avail.
so I started collecting parts to build one, I have a Warmoth neck and custom cut LP body to build a new one, I have one DeMarzio pickup a Dual Sound I am trying to remember the other pickup I had ,one for metal riffs. Oh well if I find something or fianlly get it built.
I Love anything with guitar in it.
Oh by the way check out this guys website. http://www.sweetwoodguitars.com/index.cfm

Just learn some basic power chords and play along with your favorite bands! Once you get good at chords start practicing scales and you should be able to jam like Eddie Van Halen!

You should maybe clarify that with no "musical" talent at the very least, cause we all know you have talent.
but yeah...you look at some of those charts and think...WHAT??, you cant do that with 5 fingers!!! or at least not unless your fingers are like 6" long...lol
A "D" on the other hand (not literally) is one of the easy ones JP.

go to Community, Member Homepages you can search by state for people. This site is the best Banjo site I have found, alot of professionals on it also.

Dueling banjos can be hard to play because the speed changes through out the song but may not be an issue for you since you have plenty of playing experience. It is one of those songs that non-banjo players love and not so much love from banjo players because that song get tons of requests.

I have been playing for about 3 years off and on.
I like to play harder stuff like ozzy,(Randy Rhoads) black label society, pantera, metallica..... and a ton of 80's hair band stuff.. poison, ratt, van halen, motley crue... most of the easy stuff.:firefire:
I currently have a BC Rich Beast with EMG pickups.
I play about 3 times a week, or when ever I have some spare time.
One thing I fould that works for me is to fully warm your fingers up. a good warmup is run throughout the frets and hit all of the strings. you can start off slow and work your way faster.
Here is an awesome website for learning with. it has a ton of tabs and lessons..

When we toured with them Lux and Ivy had hired my friends Nicky Alexander and Candy Del Gado to be their rhythm section. We raised so much hell through Europe! I help out at the church from time to time but spend most of my "Playing" time teaching my kids. My two daughters have the ability to play and sing and my son is playing the bass.

Work on some chords(not power chords). Just try and learn a few chords that go together and figure out a strumming pattern and start playing around.

Well I had my first lesson on Monday. It went very well. Pretty much all that happened was I showed him a few things that I know and we kinda talked a little about them. Then he gave me about five diffrent print-outs that are pretty cool and explaned them to me on the guitar. For this week I have to learn a Green Day song(good ridance) and the G major, G minor an one more scale that I cant remember. So far I can play the Green Day song all the way through fairly well and I can play the G major scale at a moderate pace. All and all it's going good. I like having a goal set each week.

Very cool Andrew. I checked out the website you mentioned, and it seems like more of a beginner place. That's what I need.
I can play the first 4 notes of "Stairway to Heaven" now, lol.

Work on some chords(not power chords). Just try and learn a few chords that go together and figure out a strumming pattern and start playing around.
I beg to differ! I think that power chords are a good way to start learning guitar since once you learn you can pretty much play along with any song! Besides you only have to learn 2 hand positions with power chords where open chords you have to learn a hand position for each one.
Here's a quickie tutorial on the tuning and playing of Led Zeppelins "Rain Song". Once you have the guitar in the correct tuning it's pretty easy to play. I just played parts but if you listen to the song you can put the parts together. Don't listen to the mess ups! LOL!

Maby your way is better than what I said. I just have never even touched power chords yet so I have no idea. Either way you go about it as long as you playing thats what really matters.

I agree with you! The most important thing is to PRACTICE! LOL!
You can do it either way really. I just think that power chords are easier to learn and keep you motivated to keep on learning and, as you've witnessed from the various posts, motivation, or lack thereof, is what keeps people from practicing!
Awesome, John. That's a crazy tune - I wonder how many frustrated guitar heros couldn't figure that one out because they didn't have the tune right?
Thanks Kevin! It took me a while to figure it out but when I hit those first few chords I knew I figured it out! What helped me the most was watching Led Zeps movie "Song Remains the Same". I had to watch how Jimmy Page fingered the fretboard to figure out how to tune it! I think I wore out that part of the DVD. LOL!

This thread got my attention back on my guitar a little. I had a Martin that was my first guitar and regretfully sold for some dumb reason. I pcked up a real cheapo acoustic when I was in Spain, don't even know what brand but it serves good enough for occasional (twice a month) playing.
My daughter is two and she loves the Dan Zanes fella, childrens music stuff, so I will play a little ditty and she'll dance around. Cute stuff.
I visited Jacksonville, FLA and a buddy that lives there took me somewhere I wasn't expecting. A graveyard. The bench has a poem by Charlie Daniels, it was really touching.

I would suggest going back to the website.
the main thing that helped me out when I first started were the tabs. If you dont know what tabs are, it basically lays out your finger position on the neck of the guitar for each stroke of the strings. It also lays out wether or not the string is muted, open, bent, hammer ons, tapping, harmonics...ect.
In the upper middle of the page, you will see a search. type in the name of the song you want the tabs for, you can also type in the bands name as well. Also, there is an alphabet shown, click on the letter that the bands name starts with and it will give a list to choose from.
Also, at the very top of the page is where the tab for lessons is located. I just checked and there are a ton of lessons for beginners and expert alike.
I think you should give the website another look. There really is a ton of info there..
oh yeah, there is also BASS lessons there as well.

I'm bringing this thread back cause I got a question. It's for the guys that are or were in bands.
Long story short I have a drummer now. I have a nice garage to practice in which is awesome for us. But I need a way to kill some sound. I had the garage totally closed and stood outside and the drums were still fairly loud. My mom(she is my neighbor) said she heard us inside her house.
We thought about putting something up to deaden the sound but are not sure what to do. Also we don't want to spend tons of money cause this is just for fun.

Most of the sound is probably coming through the garage door. Not sure how to kill it off though. Try to go to www.harmony-central.com and check out the forums. Someone there is bound to have an idea.
I've been playing since 86 (when I was 18). I've got a nice collection started and play every day.
Guitars:
82 Fender Strat - 'smith strat' - all original
85 Fender Acoustic
87 Fender Strat+
95 Fender Custom Shop '54-gold
97 Fender SRV Strat
00 Fender Jeff Beck Strat
72 Fender Strat RI - relic
07 Fender 52 Tele Hotrod
96 PRS CE22
73 Gib SG Standard
02 Gib LP Standard
93 Gib LP Classic Goldtop
95 Rick 330/12 string
96 Strat-"Danocaster" ESP neck w/ homemade body
Agile 335 Style hollowbody w/Gib pups
-----
Amps:
Fender CyberTwin
mid-80s Mesa 50caliber+
2002 Marshall DSL100 w/4x12 cab
Rack w/ RealTube Pre&Power Amps & 2x12
I play mostly classic rock (hendrix, pink floyd, zep, ac/dc) and some blues type stuff. I've never played in a band...just play mainly for stress relief and the joy of it.
Anyone want a nice SRV Strat? I've got it listed on eBay right now.

Hey Andrew!
Hate to tell you but what your neighbors are hearing most is what is hardest to kill. You have to think of sound in frequencies when you are trying to deaden it. If you look at an Oscilloscope, high frequencies(high pitched sound) has peaks and valleys that are very close together whereas low frequency sounds are spread out and far apart. This is what you are trying to fight. High frequency sound is easy to dissipate because any sort of padding that you put on your walls will kill the sound wave since it takes so much energy to get the wave through the padding whereas low frequency waves that are longer don't need as much energy to travel the same distance and easily pass through the same thickness padding. You can kill some of the lows by sealing as many air passages that you have in your garage but that will take some doing. You might want to try and find some used mattresses and carpet and hang it on the walls to try and kill as much of the lows as possible. Ideally, what you want to do is isolate as much vibration that the sound makes so that it doesn't reverberate to the outside. Most pro studios will basically construct a room within a room to try and isolate as many places that can vibrate.
You can also try having your drummer play with drum dampers which will kill some of the actual volume that the drums put out.
Sorry for the long winded lesson but I can tell you I've built many home recording studios so I know a little about this!:smoke:
BTW have fun jamming!:git: :firefire:

Gotcha. Thanks for the science lesson. I was wondering if used mattresses would help. But would you rather have a mattress, or layers of carpet and whatever kind of heavy duty sheets I can find?
It was pretty cool playing along with a drummer last night. Now I just gotta learn more songs all the way through. I know a bunch of songs and whatnot but not the complete songs. Whatever happens should be fun since we are not taking things too serious.

Bobby...which model Mesa? How do you like it and what type of music is it best for (the distortion channel?).
I have a 50 caliber+ head and was thinking of selling it to buy a rectifyer. I only have a clean & dirty channel and would like more. I'd really like a MKIV, but they are up there in price.

Just by a Pod Pro and be done with it! You can channel up to any sound you want in whatever combination you want. You can buy a used one for as much as a used Marshall head.

Andrew,
I forgot to tell you, don't do the "eggcrate" thing on the walls like a lot of people do! It does nothing for sound proofing rather it will just help make the sound you are hearing cleaner and clearer since it's reflecting the reverberation and standing waves you have in the room off in different directions instead of shooting the sound back at you and muddying up the sound.

Its a 150 watt version of the solo rect...And to be honest I really dont like it as it has no reverb built in and it seems to always be breaking:(
Lots of better heads out there for the money. Good sound/tone but very muddy when playing anything fast.

I have been playing guitar for about 13 years now. It took about a year to really get it all down. It was quite frustrating. Below is a link to some samples my brother and I layed down a couple years ago. We just recorded them on with a standard computer mic so they are not super quality. In all of them, I am singing and my brother is playing acoustic guitar. I think that the link will work.
