Does anyone know what the purpose of the black plastic piece on the back of an fbody alternator is? It appears to simply be a cover with a drain tube. The LS vette alt is covered but basically opened in the back. I'm thinking that cutting on the plastic of the Fbody one will have no advers affects, but I don't know how alternators work in detail. Thanks

i was thinking it was an air intake to cool the alt. either way i have to trim the back of mine to make it fit on my 69.

I'm having a hard time believing it's anything important that can't be cut to make work like you're doing. However, I figured I would ask. Thanks.

just bolted mine up today. im using S&P style plates and energy mounts. no cutting required.

I'm dealing with brackets I designed to hold LSx engines in C3 corvettes.

I believe it's for cooling. If it wasn't needed, it wouldn't be there.

I had to trim mine to clear subframe too. I just cut away the part (vent?) that protrudes the most. It does leave a gaping hole in the back. No real miles yet, so I don't know if it's gonna be a problem.

I was looking at the alt. in my 03 truck and noticed it is much more slimline than the F car setup. It looks as if the plastic covers are interchangeable, but still may be a tight fit for me as my motor is set back to the max. I think it may work depending on the particulars.
