Well thankfully we're done all of the fabrication that we need to on the body and are just about to complete one final mockup of all the panels before blowing it apart to go on the rotisserie and on to paint. I thought I share a couple of progress pictures:

The HRE's are C20's - 18 x 8.5 for the front and 18 x 11 for the rear.

The color is a custom mix of Diamont. We went through five different spray outs before we had something that I really liked.

In the booth:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/04/under20pained201-1.jpg

We used a thinned rock gaurd on the underside which is why there is some texture there. In person it is very subtle but in pictures it seems to catch the light and look more obvious than it is.

Wow! you're doing a real nice job with that build up! I have a few questions for you though as I am new to Camaro's. I like how you filled in on the front fenders the small peice that would mate to the bumper. Also, isn't that a 69 front lower valence? Was there any other mods to get it to fit? Does it just bolt right in? Anyways great project, I look forward to seing more pics as you progress.

all of it is looking killer! when does the rest of the body get paint?

With any luck we'll get it off the rotisserie by mid-week - we have some screwing around to finish up with the headliner that is proving much more of a PITA than anything so simple should be.

Once it's off the rotisserie and on the hoist we'll reinstall the rear suspension and hopefully fuel system then the the front sub goes on and it'll be on the ground on it's own wheels and tires. Screw aroung with this and that for a week or two and then it should be ready for paint... figure first week of June?

James OLC
05-08-2008, 07:59 PM
It seems like it's been a slow week but we've been making progress although much of it is slow and tedious.

We wet sanded and polished the firewall:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/firewall20polished-1.jpg

We got our increadible Rick's Stainless tank prepped for intallation:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/ricks4-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/ricks5-1.jpg

we'll get it installed tomorrow along with the Lateral Dynamics 3-link.

James OLC
05-08-2008, 08:08 PM
At the same time the Dynamat was going down on the interior:

Very nice build.

I have a question on the roll-bar. I noticed in earlier pics you had a halo with forward down-bars, did you remove it permanently or is it removable? In the future I would like to add the forward sub-frame bars but do not want to put in a halo.

Thanks,

To make a long, sad, and frustrating story short, the halo bar and A-pillar tubes have been "permanently" removed. It wasn't an easy or satisfying decision to have to make but they had to go; I might revist that part of the cage in the future as circumstances dictate - we'll see. I did, however, chose to keep the forward down bars and the firewall cross bar beneath and behind the dash; they are actually largely integrated into the body of the car.

James OLC
05-12-2008, 06:49 PM
Thanks.

The fronts are +29 offset or 5.89" backspacing.

It is worked for me, in this application, but I can't guarantee that it will work for anyone else - it's really (really) close. If nothing else, consider it a starting point.

I used a mount mate to get close then bought a cheap american racing wheel from summit to double check suspension clearances. We actually started with a 6.125" BS but the 5.89" was the max to clear the AP brakes.

It's been a slow two weeks between holidays and an unfortunate delay at the coaters but I'm back on it now. We got the headers ceramic coated and installed now. I love the headers from this point of view - you never really get to see it and it really gives you an idea how much beef the ATS headers have:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/06/headers20behind201a-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/06/headers20behind203-1.jpg

Once we shuffle some things around in the shop we'll drop the body on and, if the center section arrives, we'll have the car on the ground by the end of the week.

First of all, TOP NOTCH build you've got going on there! Very nice attention to details.

A couple of questions. We are about to purchase a paint booth. The one we are looking at is 14X28 made by ColeMet. How wide is your booth? Looking at the pics of the car in there on the rotissarie, looks lke you have plenty of room. I'm thinking 14 wide's gonna be cramped, but your's looks like there is room to spare.

2nd question: We have a homemade rotissarie, and I am wondering, is that big truck slack adjusters you use for the rotating part? If so, how stable are they? Do you just turn the bolt and where you stop, it's locked? I never thought about using slack adjusters. If that is what those are, I'm blowing my rotissarie apart and fabbing up some of those!!

Thanks in advance for the answers.

The front shocks still need to be adjusted to get the front end down another 2 inches to get to ride height.

Unbelievably awesome build!!! Quality in every facet of the car.

What are the specs on the AP brakes? Diameters? Rotor thicknesses? Are the front rotors 1.25" or 1.38" thick?

Thanks - I think that I may have gone overboard here and there but it happens. I am really happy with the way the car is coming - it's cool to see it finally on it's own four feet.

The fronts are 6-piston calipers and the rotor specifications are 362 mm x 32 mm (14.25" x 1.26")

The rears are 4-piston calipers and rotor specifications are 356 mm x 26 mm (14.00" x 1.02") - although I want to double check the rear measurements.

I am not concerned about heat there at all. The pictures make it look closer than it really is (there is about an inch of clearance) and the complete exhaust is being ceramic coated. We are also going to wrap the exhaust over the last two feet or so since in addition to the tank we have diff cooler lines running back there and fuel lines going forward; we also want to minimize heat behind the diffuser. Probably overkill but better safe than sorry.

No worries, the braided lines aren't even permanent - I just put them together to get the layout and clocking right on the fittings. We are going to try a couple of different options but at the end of the day there will be no zip ties holding anything together...

Thanks, it's really starting to come together now. Bleeding the brakes while fabricating the diffuser today, Sheetmetal will be back on tomorrow... looking foward to seeing it back together again.

Every spring, Heighton Restoration in Beiseker, AB has an open house and car show. Since we were mocking up the sheetmetal to make sure the fit was correct before welding the subframe in Chris thought it would be cool make the car half way presentable for the show. I think the results are killer:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/06/june2013201-1.jpg

The stance is really close but I think that the actual ride height will be an inch higher front and back when we are done.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/06/june2013202-1.jpg

The lower valance and Marquez running lights came out pretty well. The chin spoiler is a Carbon Fiber piece that probably will be replaced soon but definetely shows completes the front end well. We're not quite done on the header panel and a few other bits and pieces but wanted to get all the sheetmetal together one last time before paint.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/06/june20132013-1.jpg

Again Matt at RFR Custom Fabrication came through with the upper collars for the hood pins. The Ring Brother's pins were originally designed for Mustangs and left some threads exposed on the Camaro. Matt went above and beyond here and came up with a perfect solution.

We're not all that worried about heat - the exhaust will be ceramic coated for the entire length and the last two feet or so will be wrapped - but there is approximately 13 square inches of adjustable ventilation at the back, just in case.

Sorry that it has been so long since the last update - we are at that point in the build that doesn't really photograph well. Some people might find the work a little boring but some of it is really cool. In the last couple of weeks we were able to get the front spoiler / splitter together to the point that it's ready for final bodywork.

We also spent the last couple of days getting the coils mounted.

We started with these trick billet coil brackets:
These are prototypes that we had machined for us by Matt at RFR. The final product will be anodized but we wanted to evelate the design before moving forward.

James OLC
07-27-2008, 08:19 PM
You also mentioned splitter, when do we get to see it?

Matt

I guess now is as good a time as any.

The first stages of fabication, we based it on a stock spoiler and increased the rake slightly:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/07/spoiler20evo201-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/07/spoiler20evo202-1.jpg

James OLC
07-27-2008, 08:21 PM
Then we closed the sides in, trying to follow the curves of the lower fender as well as possible:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/07/spoiler20evo203-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/07/spoiler20evo204-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/07/spoiler20evo205-1.jpg

James OLC
07-27-2008, 08:25 PM
and finished it off with the spitter itself at the bottom. This is just roughed in at this point; before moving forward with the bodywork Chris and Shane tweaked the corners and the base for a tight, flat fit:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/07/spltr203-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/07/spltr201-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/07/spltr202-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/07/spltr204-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/07/spltr206-1.jpg

I like that we found a way to follow the original design and take it to the next level. We will probably wind up with a couple of bases - one for the street and one for the track. It's probably not for everybody and that's fine but it fits with the OneLap build and should have a positive effect on the track.

Well, the car is in the paint booth as we speak. It's been boarded for the fourth time and is getting it's final wet sand before paint. With any luck Chris will being laying down paint before the end of the week. I'll try to shoot some pictures today.

Since the splitter pics most of the progress has been subtle and is not really photogenic. We have got most of the engine wired and are waiting for four sensors before we can call it done. Plug wires are built and in place, and the AC lines are out being crimped as we speak (type... whatever). The exhaust is at the coater and the driveshaft is on it's way.

At the back of the car, we have the Optima battery in place as well as the Safecraft fire bottle:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/08/trunk20stuffJPG-1.jpg

At the front we are looking at some bumpstop alternatives (some are more mundane than others while some are bordering on exotic). No decisions there yet (packaging is tight) but we did a bit of work on the steering arm - baer tracker mounting. One of the difficulties with wider front wheels on the stock subframe (and maybe aftermarket ones as well?) is that when using something like the Baer Tracker tie rod end and bump steer spacers is that the tapered stud is quite long and can interfere with the inner/outer lip of the wheel on the inboard side. Our HREs have nearly a 6" backspacing and interference was definately an issue. The solution is a minor modification to the steering arm and the use of a 5/8" bolt rather than the tapered stud:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/08/tie20rod20end202JPG-1.jpg

Three things to note: (1) there are no any spacers for bump steer in place yet as the car hasn't been aligned at this point (2) a safety washer below the heim is a must and (3) ultimately the castle nut on the top will have a cotter pin in place.

Plenty of clearance now:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/08/tie20rod20end201aJPG-1.jpg

James OLC

Also up front Chris had been working on aligning the front sheetmetal and hood for the final time so we brought out the billet hood latch that Matt at RFR had machined for us:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/08/old20hoodlatch201JPG-1.jpg

We have changed the design slightly from this version but wanted to test fit the piece as was and make sure the the alignment and adjustment was there.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/08/Old20latch20intalled20farJPG-1.jpg

The final installation will use Ring Brothers hardware but i think the piece really adds a nice touch, especially since we do not need the safety catch.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/08/old20latch20installed20nearJPG-1.jpg

James OLC
08-10-2008, 04:41 PM
The new design is slightly more refined and matches some of the other billet bits that we have integrated under the hood:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/08/New20Hoodlatch-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/08/New20Hoodlatch202-1.jpg

It will use the DSE stud and maintains a locknut on the backside:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/08/New20Hoodlatch3-1.jpg

I'll post more pictures of this when it is back from the anodizer and installed but there is something that is cool about newly machined raw pieces. We are planning on doing a limited production run of these (and/or the original version) if there is any interest.

James OLC

The car is now in the booth and getting ready for paint. Chris spent the last couple of days realigning all of the sheetmetal and giving the car it's final boarding. He started on the first wet sanding (400 grit) today (he was on the drivers side roof when I took these) and should have it ready for paint by midweek if everything goes well.

What size reservoirs are you using?

I don't have the actual capacity here in front of me right now; I have a number in my head but I am pretty sure if I write it down it will be wrong.

I am using the "short" CV Products (or Tilton - they are the same) reservoirs. I also have the mounting bar and -4AN fitting/housing. The reservoir actually screws into the housing with the -4AN male machined as part of it. I believe that they will also tread directly into some of the MC's but I don't know exactly which ones (although I can say positively not the Tilton 77 series).

I was thinking about getting "tall" ones but someone told me that the "short" would be fine for my setup. I did not know they screw into some MC, I need to look for that. Thanks for the info.

One last piece of business that we wanted to get to before paint was running the AC lines in the engine compartment. We tucked the Vintage Air bulkhead high under the passenger fender and although it was ideal for hiding the lines there, it really made getting them hooked up more of an exercise as a contortionist than a builder. Suprisingly they cooperated from the start and we were able to get all of the hoses run with a fraction of the cussing that I used during the original mock up.

We'll clean the hoses up a bit after paint but I think we were able to run them with minimal clutter.

Well, it's been two and half years since we started on the '67 and we are finally in the paint booth this weekend. Yesterday was dedicated to the last of the clean up after it's final wet sanding:

and we got the car masked for paint... unfortunately, as is usually the case, my camera battery died after the first couple of pieces:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/08/masking201JPG-1.jpg

It's masked now and Chris just wanted to spend a bit more time on the hood (the carbon fiber has proven a challenge to get ready for paint) and give the trunk lid one final pass before starting the paint. Of course today is the hottest day of the year so he was thinking about starting a little later in the day to make the process a bit more bearable.

Chris started painting this morning after a final day of masking and prepping yesterday. The day started off with 5 coats of base applied with all of the body parts in their proper location to minimize variations in the metallic and ensure consistency over the entire car.

With the base coats done the car was partially blown apart again, with the hood, trunk, header, and valance coming off and four coats of clear being laid down over the course of the afternoon.

We’ll give the paint a day and then the wet sanding and buffing will begin. With five passes of wet sanding and three rounds of polishing there is another 40 hours of work before we start reassembly.

You are correct. The jams were painted and cleared prior to masking. We'll blow them (and some other edges) in again prior to wet sanding the clear to bring them together and get rid of any possible seams.

Well we are working hard on getting the car together and are making more and more headway every day.

On Monday we were fortunate enough to borrow some awesome new scales from the guys at Tunerworks in Calgary, AB. We used the wireless Longacre scales to corner weight the car for a baseline to get the Penske shocks blueprinted next week:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/09/Sept2015JPG-1.jpg

James OLC
09-19-2008, 08:34 PM
Once we were done with the scales, we sent the car to the upholstry shop to get the carpet, headliner, and trunk finished up while we wait for the rest of the interior to come together. He finished up with the car this morning and did a nice, clean job.

The trunk was simple and efficient, I wanted to maintain a (modern) factory like finish and think that it hit the mark:

Littlefuse and I-Squared have provided one of their increadible new ISIS power distribution/management systems for the car. The kit is increadibly complete and represents the absolute state of the art for wiring and control. I will be posting the step by step install of the system on the forums and with more detail on our wbsite as the installation goes forward over the next week. For now here are a couple of sneak peaks at the ISIS kit:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/09/ISIS201JPG-1.jpg

The heart of the ISIS System is the Mastercell which acts as a control hub for all of the downstream functions in the car. The programmablity of the Mastercell gives the entire system increadible power as it allows for multiple switches to control individual loads (like electric fans) and car incorporate soft starts for loads like Halogen or projector lights.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/09/ISIS202JPG-1.jpg

A single Mastercell can control up to five "Powercell" modules which is the muscle behind the Mastercell brain. CAN bus technology connects the Powercells to the Mastercell and reduces both the quantity of wiring required as well as the time needed for the installation.

We did a little bit of a cleanup in the engine compartment yesterday, replacing the factory fuel rails with a pair of billet rails. Like most of their parts, they came anodized bright red which was a little too bright for my taste so we had the rails sent to Pacific Coast Anodizing in Fresno, CA to be stripped and recoated in Black Hardcoat. Rodger from Ironworks was kind enough to check on them while they were there (or something like that) and they came out great...

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/09/fuel20rails202JPG-1.jpg

in addition to tidying things up a bit, they will alllow us to ... try some different intake combinations ... not that I would be tempted to do something like that...

Chris also got done polishing the hood. The carbon fiber proved to be really challenging to get to paint quality but, as with everything else on the car, Chris put in an awesome effort and got it as smooth and straight as the rest of the car...

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/09/hood20polished203JPG-1.jpg

The underside will get one more coat of clear - most likely a semigloss - on the natural carbon tomorrow.

James OLC
09-22-2008, 08:35 PM
Ok... so it wasn't "one more" coat of clear... it was four more coats. Coupled with the previous six coats of clear that Chris laid down earlier there are a total of ten coat on the natural carbon fiber underside of the hood. The four today are have a semigloss finish similar to all of the grey used on the rest of the car. The first six coats were needed to clean up some irregulaties in the cowl assembly.

James OLC

We also made some great headway on the wiring... we built the rear wiring harness and spotted the ISIS power fuses and rear Powercell...

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/09/isis20install207a-1.jpg

Tomorrow we'll be working toward locating the Powercell for the front harness and the Mastercell which provides the control for the two Powercells. I hope to have an update on the webpage documenting the install up in a couple of days. The more I explore the potential of the ISIS System the more impressed I am with it's capabilities. In addition to the wiring we have been making great progress in and out of the car. The new dash has arrived - we fitted it yesterday and finalized the installation today. Tomorrow we'll work at getting the Vintage Air vents and controls mounted and as soon as the Racepak dash arrives we'll get the instrument cluster together.

The main oil tank and breather is a Peterson piece that is available from American Touring Specialties; give Tyler a call and I am sure that he can hook you up. Installation can be fairly simple - the height is perfect and it tucks nicely in the corner - but in our case we got a little carried away with out inner fender modifications around the tank. It came out well and helps give it the factory feel but it was a ton of work.

Just the fact that it's a 67 makes me happy. The color and wheels are spot on. Amazing work.

It's been a long couple of weeks and we have been making lots of progress but at this point there are some things that will have to wait.

What I can share is some of the good and bad that we have been dealing with as we try to get everything together...

The ISIS System has been powered up and, I have to tell you, is very impressive. The rear Powercell is complete and fully functional -

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/10/isis20install2017JPG-1.jpg

and is being controlled by the front mounted Mastercell control box. The diagnostic ablilities are awesome and make the system very easy to deal with. We fabricated a hinged mount for the Mastercell beneath the dash to give us easy access; I'm getting too old to contort myself like a pretzel to get under the dash -

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/10/isis20install2019JPG-1.jpg

Which we have been laying out -

:pics2: - nope

Despite all of the complexities that I had heard about Racepak dashes in the past, the new IQ3 seems to have solved many of the complications. Despite having some difficulties at first, once we had all of the pieces that we needed it was very straight forward.

On the down side, we had to start working on a new hood. I stole the NOS hood off my wifes '67 (if I don't start working on it soon there won't be a lot left of it) and Chris started stripping it.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/10/nos20hood201JPG-1.jpg

Unfortunately, our carbon hood had a couple of problems that we just could not overcome. Fortunately, the steel hood is almost perfect -

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/10/nos20hood204JPG-1.jpg

It should be in paint by the end of the week.

We are doing a final test fit of the grill and headlights -

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/10/rs20frontJPG-1.jpg

The Penske shocks should be back by mid week and we should have it running before the end of the week.

With a little help from our friends....

As long as no time equates to 14 days I agree - we should be ok.

Thanks everybody - as the interior takes shape it really brings it all together.

Well after a monumental three week thrash we made our way down to Las Vegas for the SEMA show. The tow itself was 24 long hours of driving but we made it without incident and I was able to take a quick snapshot this morning in the American Touring Specialties parking lot...

And with great thanks to Tyler and Russel at ATS we were able to get the sway bar installed before heading over to the SEMA show this afternoon. Optima Batteries has sponsored our entry and although we are not in their booth, we have an awesome spot in the main hall beside the Ford display. I'll be kicking around most of the week so if you're around, give me a shout or fire me a PM. Until then, a quick move in picture...
