All,
I have a 67 Firebird with the charming ability to put the front tires into contact with the fender when i hit a bump- even while driving in a straight line. I think the springs are about 10 years old- Moog big-block springs, while the shocks are a bunch older.
Anyway, have ordered new shocks from Hotchkis (there was a sale). Question is- should the springs be replaced at the same -time? I guess the root question is weather the rubbing is a spring or shock issue? The car does not bounce back and forth when you press down on a fender and let it rebound.
Would the old springs "wear out" the new shocks if I just threw 'em in??

Thanks -

No, old springs won't "wear out" new shocks. Your old springs may lose a little rate over the years and sag a little, so your ride height should drop accordingly. The higher the quality the spring, the less it should sag but 10 years with a big-block on your back is bound to wear on them a little.

Have you looked at your jounce bumpers? You could replace those with the more modern and slightly more progressive bump stops from later generation applications, GM #15956547. The ones on my 4th gen Nova were AWOL when I rebuilt my front end...thrashed bumpers can definitely result in some tire to fender contact.

OK - will install shocks, check for bumpers- thanks for the response. You rule! If I don't have to spend money - it's more $$$ for a TKO!!
