I have a 1968 firebird with 3" drop leaf springs and a QA1 coil over convertion on the front. My sub frame has about 5" of clearance and thats about right for were I live and drive. My mufflers hang down too low. They are at about 3.5 inches and its just too low for me. What are all you guys with the lowered cars running for exhaust systems. I am running factory ram air exhaust manifolds so there is no clearace issues on that part. I would like to find a system that will not hang below my sub frame. Any pictures of what you have would be great.

Every muffler exhaust system will hang lower then the frame. What you can do is call up flowmaster and tell them to include there low-profile race muffler instead of there 40-series.

I use cherry bombs, with magnaflow resinators before them. Sounds great but a tad on the loud side.

I have a Torque Tech 3 into 2.5 X pipe system. I intalled it myself and it hangs up at least as high as my subframe connectors. Great fit. It sounds like you just need a little work to tuck it up, if it's still solid.

Thanks I will check it out. I think if I went with the oval tubing and a transverse mounted dual in out muffler were my gas tank use to be I could keep it tucked up pretty well.

There is an install story featuring the 1st gen Firebird 2-1/2" Pypes system with Doug's Headers in the current (Jan/Feb '08) issue of Pontiac Enthusiast.

Supposed to have great ground clearance, might be worth checking out.

Use oval pipe, and build a crowflow system, like a factory chambered exhuast

I have Doug Thorley Tri Y's that feed into a pypes xpipe true dual... The ground clearance is amazing. I can get pics of the full exhaust this weekend, but for now, I have pics of the headers...

If you like flowmaster and crossflow, their system 17104 is great. I had it on my 80 TA for a while, it fits 67-81 non verts. You'd just need some down pipes.

I forgot to take pics this last weekend when I was working on the car. I'll be sure to take some this weekend. It tucks beautifully...

Here is a shot from behind... notice the angle of the picture. When looking straight ahead the mufflers are above the rear...

Here is a straight on shot from the side... notice that you can't even see the pipes because the tuck under the frame...

Happen to have any pics of the Thorley's off the car before they were installed? Ground clearance looks excellent....

No one has mentioned the RARE oval system. Not cheap but looks good.

did those tri-ys interfere with clutch linkage, mechanical or otherwise? do you happen to have a pic of the headers installed right next to the drivers side bellhousing?

No interference with the mechanical clutch linkage. It was a pain trying to get the Z bar back in, but once there it does not touch anything. I dont have a picture from underneith, but I do from above. I'll try to snap a picture later. Here is above...

You can see to the left of the steering box is the return spring. Then look at the second spark plug shown and look straight down to see the felt and the Zbar.

Here is one with the engine out of the car

Thank you for the pics. They are just what I needed to convince me that tri-ys are my next purchase following all the money I am putting into my chevelle.

Just to be sure everyone is clear, both Dougs Headers (b-man's post) and Doug Thorley headers have been mentioned in this thread. These are two different brands.
