Stock suspension and wheel tubs. I want a driveable combo bigger than 17s. I'm thinking 18s and 20s. Anyone do this and what sizes did you use. I don't want to end up higher than stock ride hieght and don't want rubber bands either.

Two inches of stagger is to much for my taste. The problem is the 19" wheel market is limited. Seems like you have to go customs. 18's look great.

I've driven the Intro camaro (see the signature) a lot of miles around LA with 18 and 20's on it. If you go that large of size you have to tuck them under and you can't go real wide.

Ideal...and what you'll be able to drive the car with are:
Fronts:
17x8 (4.5-4.75" b/s)
245/40-17's
Rears:
17x9.5 (5.5" b/s)
275/40-17's
These are a "safe" combination, you can certainly run bigger tires all around but every car is different and you must test-fit to be sure.
If you go with 18's as has been mentioned, you are limited somewhat in width's unless the car is tubbed.
I got a buddy who runs 18's all around...but they're only 8" wide:
Tires are a whole bunch more affordable too in a 17" format...

Honestly, you are going to end up with some low-profile rubber with those size wheels. I'd say 18's all around is a little more realistic for a car that you really want to be driveable and have a decent ride. I know 17s are almost "small" these days, but they fit these cars well.
The ever-popular 17" sizes (245/45/17 & 275/40/17) that most guys are running on non-tubbed 1st gens are very close in overall height to what came on these cars originally. These tires are both around 25.7", and you are probably going to want to keep the new ones close to this. I personally don't like the look of 28"+ tall tires on 20" wheels on musclecars.
If it were my car, I'd stick with 17s or 18s. This will allow you to keep some sidewall while keeping the height in check. That blue camaro in the pics above looks great with those 18" torque thrusts. Just my 2 cents,

Wheels are 18x8's all-around (4.5" b/s) and the tires are I believe 265/35 fronts and 285/35 rears...but I'd need to confirm that.Almost positive though...

Just this past summer I switched from 15" wheels with 60 series rubber to 18" with 40 series rubber to avoid "rubber bands".
To be honest....
I love the look. And thats the biggest reason I switched!
But...
Even with 40 series tires the ride is not what I would call decent.
60 series sidewalles is decent ride. 40 series or less is "firm" and what I would also say a sports car ride.
By firm I mean, the ride is 100% different.
The car feels better, turns better, grips the corners better....but handles the bumps in the road..yeah not so much. Around here it made me realize how crappy some of the roads I drive really are.
Even after changing to adjustable shocks (made a huge difference) the ride is lot more harsh then it was.
But when I want a smooth ride, I drive our BMW.
When I want a fun ride, I take the Firebird.

Yeah, it really depends on what you are used to and what you are willing to tolerate when it comes to tires. All my cars have low profile rubber, so it's something I'm used to. My BMW 335i has factory 18" run-flats with 40 & 35 series tires front/rear, but it still manages to have an acceptable ride that doesn't beat you up. If I put those wheels on one of my Camaros, it would most likely be a different story.
But yeah, driving cars with low profile tires really does make you apopreciate well maintained roads.

285/35 on a 8" rim is a quite bigger than recommended, can you please let us know?

after starring at that car for a while, man I like it. those front wheels have got to be 17's I measured on my computer screen {yeah thats accurate} but they are definatly smaller than the rears which are 18's. so unless the owner chimes in to verify take a better look at em tell me if Im guessing right.
