Okay... this could be a stupid question... but can you take a 6L truck motor and bolt on LS1 heads and intake? Are all the LS parts interchangable?

The intake will not be compatible but I believe you can.
I don't think the reverse is possible though.
everything is interchangeable you just have to look at the small differences in parts like ,water pumps, oil pans, and accessories.
most say you cant use a car intake on a truck because of the water pump. but as far as heads, cams, rockers, oil pumps, and all the hard parts will swap over.
you can even mount the F body accessory drive on a truck engine. all you have to do is drill and tap a missing bolt hole for the alternator mount.

The 6L truck engine has better heads (better in flow/performance) than what the 5.7 car's have.
The truck intake flows better and makes more power also. The difference in the water pumps is where the upper hose connects. The trucks have a top mounted water neck and the cars exit out the front of the pump. You could use a car pump w/a truck intake but you can't use a truck pump w/a car intake (I think).
If you have a complete 6 liter, keep it as a package. You'll degrade the thing by using car heads and intake. Look in any car magazine that dyno builds an LS engine. If it doesn't have aftermarket heads, most likely it'll have ported truck heads (minimal porting because of thin-walled castings) and a truck intake.
The stock truck bottom end is good for 700 HP, it'll take whatever most can dish out. An excellent candidate for turbo charging.
Good luck on your engine.

This isn't correct. The truck intakes flow the same as LS1 intakes through the low rpms. The LS6 intake is still the best factory intake made for all rpms. The truck engines are limited by the cam shaft in them. Change it out and it will work into the 6k range like a car, but then the intake is a restriction. Clearance with the truck intake is a factor for most cars.
LQ9/317 heads are LS6 heads with a larger combustion chambers. They are better than LS1 heads but are not better than LS6 heads unless you are boosting the engine. Then the lower compression brought about by the larger combustion chambers is a huge benefit.
Car intakes do work with truck accessories but you have to modify the brackets a little. The truck accessories are ugly like the truck intake though and usually cause clearence issues in cars.
Evreything on Gen 3 engines interchanges completely except for when dealing with the 4.8 liter engine. It uses a different crank while all the other engines are only bore size different.
You can swap car heads onto a 6.0 and use the truck intake if you want. The issues you run into are with the front accessories. You have to change them over completely. The car water pumps are the same but do not work with truck accessories. The truck water pumps do not work with car accessories.
Do not put LS1 heads on a 6.0 engine. Those heads just are not good and LS6 heads are not expensive any more and work that much better. However, there is no phsyical reason LS1 heads will not work on a 6.0.
No question is stupid.

So, is there any point in a cam change on a truck engine if you keep the truck intake?
Absolutely! You just should not use a cam suited for a car in it that's all. These guys will show you what a truck engine with truck manifold can do. www.performancetrucks.net

Am I mistaken, or did I read somewhere that the truck heads (L-76 I think) won't work on an LS-1? I thought it was something regarding the width of the valves vs. the bore diameter of the smaller engine.
You are almost right, True. The L76 is the intake needed to mate up to the L92 heads. Those are the heads that are basically LS7 intake runners with LS6 exhaust ports. They require a 4.00" bore, ie 6.0 liters or more. Those are the heads and intake on an LS3 and the L92(6.2 liters also) truck motors.

Listen to Trey on this one. The LS6 heads are a great bang for your buck on an LS1. I got my Stage II LS6 heads from Patriot Performance for $1095. You just can't beat it.

So wait... if you put the LS6 heads on the 6.0L motor, the LS6 intake will work but you have to ditch the accessories? Does FAST make an intake that works on the truck motors with LS6 heads?
Thanks for the info... still trying to weigh all this out. It's a financial decision at this point.. my suspension has broken me. :(
Dan
the only intakes you CAN'T use are:
LS7 (ls7 heads only)
L76 (aussie car intake, designed for L92 heads)
ls1 ls6 truck and fast intakes fit everything not using ls7, or l92 heads
the reason why we say to ditch the truck accessories is because they cause major hood clearance problems. look at how tall the intake and alternator are.

these are the GTO accessories, pretty much the same as an F body

you can easily buy a 6.0 short or long block and add the intake and accessories you want.
The problem with using any car intake on a truck engine is that the car intakes set the TB much lower than the truck intake does. The truck accessories are tall and the water pump outlet points up instead of straight out the front. Everything just gets too close together to work without modifications. I don't even think the truck accessories will work in your camaro because they are so tall. The FAST intake is a car intake.
What you need to realize is that the Gen3/4 motors are all the same size on the outside. That's the 4.8 to 7.0 engines. Only the LS7, L92, and LS3 engines have different intake ports requiring certain intakes. All the rest can swap the intakes no problem so long as it does not interfere with the accessories or the hood of the car the engine will be in. You can put a truck intake on an LS6 engine if you wanted to. What all this means is that you can swap all sorts of parts between the engines with minimal difficulties in order to make the engine fit. Like mentioned, usually an untapped boss is the only work that needs to be done in order to swap parts.
I am running corvette accessories on an 5.3 truck motor along with an LS6 intake. I could have used Fbody accessories. I do believe they would have fit the car and I know they would fit the engine.
What you need to do Dan is make sure the engine will fit in the camaro with the truck intake and accessories. If the intake does not fit, you can put an LS1 intake on the car and modify the brackets just a little to work. LS1 intakes go for about $30 used all day long. If the truck accessories do not work, you will need to change over to car accessories. This could be Fbody or vette. You will need to find out which will work as they are slightly different. One of these methods(whichever is needed) will be the cheapest way to get the engine into the car.
Check www.performancetrucks.net about putting a car intake onto a truck engine with truck accessories. I am sure you can find a write up or even pictures if you search.
Good job with the pictures DCx. You posted all that while I was typing this up.
