11 hours from SF Bay Area to Thousand Oaks

Yeah, that's right. It took 11 hours. Normally it's gonna be about 6 hours. I got stuck in the Grapevine on I-5 for 4 hours. That's just to go 7 miles. That's horrible. The good thing is that I don't remember it anymore. Turns out I went nuts half way in. Please pray for my sister, who I'm travelling with. Driving home on sunday should be fun. :Alchy:

Yeah, I heard they shut part of the SB 5 down by castiac because they were afraid of mud-slides in the area......craziness!!!!

I got stuck there in 78 going the other way, they let south-bound cars go for a couple of hrs, then let north-bound cars go. There was a terrible mud slide that covered the south bound lanes climbing the hill for about a half mile. I took a couple of pics of it as we passed by since I wasn't driving. There were partially buried cars and I saw a bulldozer on the highway pushing the mud off the road.

I woke up at 6 a.m and drove my 68 chevelle on empty freeway to Pomona. Saw the sunrise and picked up a nos grille for $100. Came back around 10 a.m. and it was nice and sunny and the freeways were empty. Maybe I just had some better luck today.

you couldnt pay me enough to live in california. cant stand the government out there and i know i would not put up with the traffic. with that said i would like to visit northern cali. ive been to san diego and la jolla, very pretty. but the mountains are more my thing

Well, I just got back from my trip. The mudslide on I-5 was nothing. The main thing was the four lanes shrinking down into one. I did have a good time there, and the weather was what I typically see. It was really summer time weather in January.

The trip back, on the other hand.... That's something to remember. I drove back on 101 past the destroyed town of La Conchita. The picures on the news don't do it any sort of justice. It's not just the amount of destruction, but the awesomeness of it. The amount of earth that is now missing from the mountain is absolutely unimaginable. I really don't know what they should do there, but I do know that nobody should be moving back in there. I'm completely impressed by the power of nature in that area. I'm about 5 1/2 hours out of it, and I'm still stunned. There's still mud on the freeway. Southbound 101 was backed up for at least 5 miles. At least half way to Santa Barbara. Talk about nuts....

As for Northern California, well, it all depends on where you go. I'm sure there's a few of us up here that can tell you what nice places there are to go here. Besides most of the Bay Area, it's a whole different world from Southern California.

yeah thats what ive heard and thats what appeals to me the most. im not a fan of southern cali. too flat. i like the mountians and hills and country side. thats why i live in north GA and no longer in the low country(coastal areas). its beautiful here.

WS6 I have to agree with you. People down here are a bunch of america hating,prius driving hippies. But Ive lived down here all my life and the weather and car culture make it worth it. Thats soon to change though as I am leaning more towards arizona. You can buy a piece of land and build a shack with a 6 car garage.

i was in arizona for a few minutes(lay over) went out side when it was 115. didnt feel bad considering there was no humidity, but i was also listening to a report of a little girl who suffered burns from falling down in the driveway while riding her bike. something about getting burned by the sidewalk worries me. other than that i dont know much about AZ.

All im gonna but in is say Northern Cali is the best. I love California born and raised but ive had my share of time in the other states. The bay area is where its at but only problem is 1/4 of time there are just way to many people on the road. But from just about anywhere in the bay just a few miles away from the cities are great back roads that will take u anywhere!!!

thats exactly how athens is over here. five minutes or less down the road and im on country roads, loving the hills, the curves, the lack of traffic, and the 55 mph speed limits.

:eek: That's pretty bad! It took me about 90 minutes to get home today. 26 miles, and that was driving during rush hour while it was SNOWING. There was already about an inch or so on the ground, and the LIE was moving at about 5mph. I can't imagine how bad traffic must be out there. NY traffic is TERRIBLE, and I hear Cali is much worse.

We don't have any twisty back roads on Long Island :doh:, but I did have some fun with my truck in the snow after I got off the expressway. :headbang:
