Every one I've used takes so long to heat the connector, it's not even funny. Half the time they only melt the solder with direct contact with the solder and that can't be good.

The way I was taught was to 'tin' the tip of the iron, and then heat the part to be soldered with the tip and remove the heat and add solder letting it flow into the connection. Is this correct.

Thanks!

Don't remove the heat before applying the solder or a cold joint may happen. Tin the iron and if using stranded wire tin it as well. I have an adjustable Weller iron 350W-850W and love it they are not cheap but work very well.

I too have a Weller. I don't remember what wattage it is, but it has been a great tool. Most real electronic supply stores carry them.

I use one from Sears. Works great even on 10 and 12 gauge wire wound together as a splice. Its important to keep the iron below the wire and let it heat up the wire. Press the solder (automotive solder) against the wire and it will melt like butter.
