This past week at SEMA, I had the pleasure of enjoying a bottle of Don Jose Horchata while in Vegas. I used to live in SoCal and would enjoy the goodness of this spiced rice beverage, but I have not had any in quite a while. My local stores don't carry it. Good stuff!

Out here they sell it either in the 7-11's(Circle K to you right coasters!) or at the local taco stand. Is it better bottled or straight out of the mixer machine!:rotfl:

You can get it at just about ANY monster burrito or Mexican restaurant
around Chicagoland + burbs. I'm a HUGE fan of it myself. One of my
favorite beverages in truth. :2nd: I get a BIG glass at every monster
drunken burrito stop.

You can actually purchase the concentrated little milk jugs of it at most
any Latin grocery store. They're like $4 and make's 4 gallons IIRC.

There is an Old School family style Mexican joint where all my construction supervisor friends (the guys who built my house and they definately know where to eat, if you know what I mean) on Flamingo between Maryland and Eastern on the south side of the street...

And there are only two good Roberto's in all of Las Vegas... one on south (way south, like... south of Blue Diamond) Las Vegas Blvd and one on Eastern south of the 215 just past Warm Springs....

Other than that... you gotta head to the barrio in the north west. Which, I dont recommend if your not familiar.

Now... ask me about San Diego. I know all the good joints for specific menu items no-less ;)

Where in SoCal do you live?
If you’re close to LA and you want to try a good hole in the wall, go to Mario's Peruvian! It's about a 30 minute drive for me from Marina del Rey (with the usual traffic), but soooo worth it. It's located at the corner of Melrose Ave and Vine in between a Popeye's Chicken and a Radio Shack. You can't get much more hole in the wall than that. My favorite dish is Lomo Saltado which is strips of steak cooked with potatoes, red onions, cilantro and other spices sitting next to a bed of rice. Damn I am getting hungry just thinking about it. If you don't go with the Horchata, get an Inca Kola. Good Stuff!

Horchata goes so great with spicy foods! It seems to help tame the heat.

Whats the name of the this joint? Been to Robertos! It was OK but a little to "americanized" for my tastes! Which way is north/west? I know it's not heading towards Summerlin!:rotfl:

Been to Marios and it's good but it's not really mexican. It's more Perexican! LOL!
There's a place in East L.A. that serves you a burrito so big that if you can finish it they give you another one for free!
There's a place, not a hole in the wall but good Mexican, on Melrose right down the street from Marios. Lucy's El Adobe. I love her chicken enchiladas!
Best Mexican restaurant in L.A. for hot chicks? El Compadre on Sunset across from the Guitar Center! Home of the Flaming Margarita. You have to go at least once to experience it!
Best place to introduce yourself to Mexican food if you've never eaten it in L.A.? El Cholo on Western. Just enough "american" to not make it to overwhelming but still enough "mexican" to get a taste of what its all about! Order shots of Cuervo "Reserva de la Familia"! They go down like water! Well....sort of! LOL!
Another chick magnet/hole in the wall? El Carmen on 3rd Street. They have over 200 tequilas to choose from and killer tacos and Guacomole!

Ive been there. Its huge... and I got through about half before I threw in the towel. The rice alone kicked my ass. I just cant remember the name of the joint. My GF at the time work for the Lakewood Sheriff's Dept and knew of all the good joints to eat. That was one of them... and I will warn you that the burro es grande'. Too grande'...

Roberto's in Las Vegas isnt the same as it is in San Dog. So in short, there is no real mexican food in Las Vegas. That is one of the things I miss so much about San Dog... you want getto tacos, hit the "H" strret taco shop in Chula Vista... you want the best California burrito, its in Spring Valley... carne asada burrito, Sombreos in Carmel Mountain Ranch... chicken tacos, El Cajon blvd and 54th... carne asada fries, Sartinos before you go into Poway... and the hot sauce... everytime Im in San Dog I hit up Sartinos just to pick up some hot sauce.

Fish tacos ?? Ruben's off of highway 1, down and across the street from the Joker hotel in Ensanada Mexico. That shop started what we know today as Rubio's...

I should have said north/east. NW is Stupidlin... there isnt anything in Stupidlin. Hell... there arent any good sandie shops here except for Port of Subs.

All we have here are Taco Bell's and a few Mom and Pop places that are crummy. The only upscale one I can think of is Abuelo's. We used to have Don Pablo's but people stopped going there and most of them have closed down along with all the Chi Chi's that everyone now hates. Marquez Market on Rosecrans in Norwalk is pretty good. They have upscaled in the past few years. No more paper table cloths and they now accept credit cards. But, you can still get your drink from the 7-11 type refrigerators.

Huevos Rancheros and Horchata. Yum.

I have lived in SoCal almost all of my life, so never really knew any different. We have such a wide selection of so many things and a car show of some type almost every weekend.

Mexican food is my favorite and I could not image my college days without 3 rolled taco with guac + some carne asada taco's at 2 am on the weekends. It was good, cheap and in my budget!

Who would have thought a thread on horchata would have gotten me stepping back into memory lane.:pat:

I used to live in Hermosa and Redondo Beach - we'd eat at Rosa's on PCH in HB... good stuff. Some of the best Horchata came from the "catering" trucks - ("roach coach" is no longer P.C.) in the junkards. Nothing like pulling parts in Sun Valley when it's 120 degrees and slingin' back a cool, although dusty, Horchata.

I think we'll be in SoCal in January... we should plan a little Mexican fiesta!

Man...that IS cruel.

Finding decent Mexican food in Minnesota is like herding cats.

I have found a couple decent places, but you almost have to try everything on the menu to find what is really good and what isn't.

I have found one place that's been really good on a consistent basis, but they are slow as hell to get your order together. On one hand, that's good, because they make everything when you order it. But, it does seem to take forever. Luckily, it's worth it.

But, I do miss SoCal. Whenever I go back, Mexican food is high on the list. I'm a huge fan of the Carnitas, and if I can get to a Super Mex, I am a happy man.

If I can find good Carnitas el pastor, all the better.

I will also be in SoCal in January for the GNRS...Is that when the rest of you will be there?

We can all get our Mexican 'fixes' together!

We have a Chipolte by my house. That burrito looks exactly like what they serve there. Let me ask you guys....all these places that you go to in SoCal...is the setup where you walk up to counter and they build the burrito in front of you while asking you what you want in it? Those are the new rage out here in Michigan. Rio Wraps, Baja Fresh, Chipolte, and Qdoba are a few of them that have opened out here in past couple of years. Although I've never seen that Horchata drink on the menu. But then again I've never looked.

Oh no...that's a white folks thing.

The way it's SUPPOSED to be is that you order it, and then it comes out of 'the back'. You don't actually see the food being prepared. You just want to eat it.

Besides- You eat the chips and salsa (and down your wierd drink of choice) while you're waiting.

While I do like the horchata, my wierd drink of choice is pineapple soda. Way too many Mexican places have it, and I like it way too much.

Find yourself a crappy looking Taqueria in a strip mall.

The reason it tastes so good coming from "the back" is that you don't know what's in it or how it was prepared. Just have happy thoughts while it's being made.

Chipotle is McDonalds with an accent. In fact Mickey-D's was majority owner of Chipotle until last year. If they don't sell mexican beer and mexican Coca-Cola in glass bottles (it's got real sugar in it not High-Fructose corn sryup) it ain't the goods.

Yep, I agree.

I goto Chipotle too.
In fact so did Ozzy Osbourne on his show. :naughty:
You don't even WANT to know how many BAD calories are
in those monster burrito's with the "sugar" rice. :hand:

The real Mexican joints have the carne esada grilled with a nice
charred flavor over tin foil. If the Steak isn't darkened with flavor
and it's just all light brown.....it's dookie. The good stuff comes
charred and flavored up REAL nice. That, plus the Chihuahua cheese

If you guys go into an Authentic Mexican joint, just look for one of
those fountain machines you always see in hot dog places with what
looks like milk in it. That's the horchata . Like this, but with white stuff in it.

It's nice to see other people on this board know about the all night gold mine called burrito king in Chi-town if any of you should stop in Chicago make sure you detour to harlem and belmont you won't be disappointed. Burrito King is the only way to absorb Jack Daniels and Patron in the small hours, there's always a line regardless of the hour.

I forgot... your a Jarhead too. Not too many cats know about Colima's. I agree, Colima's is the shizzy in O'side !!

Speaking of good grub in the local area... there used to be an English hotdog vendor in front of the Commissary at the O'side main gate. Fries with bacon bits inside the bun with a polish dog.

Fries with bacon bits inside the bun with a polish dog.You can find bacon wrapped dogs from little mexican hot dog carts around Staples Center and the Convention Center downtown. Nothing like leaving a Laker game or LA auto show and needing some food to handle the beer. They also have taco carts as well. Damn best tacos most of the time.

Nothing beats taking a long lunch (like the rest of the day) on a Friday to head down to TJ or Rosarita/DelMar beach for some real getto tacos and beer.

So what's the big news?

Oh, and by the way here's some big news for us Michiganders....we have a King Taco here in Michigan. I couldn't believe it, my cousin told me where it was on Thanksgiving. Not too far from my house either. It just opened a few months ago. I went in there this weekend and got a Burrito and one taco and a tall Horchata. Best taco and burrito I've ever had. The Horchata was good too. It went surprisingly will with the Mexican food.

Did you get hot or hotter sauce on that?!

trapin
11-28-2007, 09:35 AM
I got the hot sauce. The burrito was "carne asada" and the taco was "taqueria style". I remembered those buzz words from this thread and thats how I knew what to order. They even had that beverage machine on the counter with the 3 vats filled with Horchata and two other beverages. Good stuff. I'll be visiting that place for mexican food from now on. But I don't think they're affilitated with the King Taco in California. I went to King Taco's website and didn't see a location for Michigan. Plus the logo is different. Perhaps the owners are from that region and stole the name to open their own restaurant here in the midwest.

Ooo with cinnamon. When I was younger my grandma always used to steam up some rice, we'd spread it out on a plate and top it with butter, cinnamon and surgar... Oh yeah!

A good, REAL mexican taqueria should have it in one of those fountain things. You should have at least one not far from you. In fact, I just had some yesterday. Along with tacos like in the picture I posted.

Get ahold of your local soft drink supplier, whom-ever services your local taco shop would be choice, as they can get you the boxed syrup.

Now all you'll have to build is a Horchatarater.

I found some of the Horchata mix at my local Mexican Market. The guy that owns the place (Rico) came out here from California and his Burrito's and Taqueria style tacos are out of this world. He turned me onto the mix and told me to mix it in a blender. It's pretty damn good.

It gets even better when the sun goes down, pour some Captan Morgans spicy rum, or some Bacardi black label in there.... welcome to south of the border.

Good thing someone brought it back. I had some horchata the other day that a friend had in the fridge staying cold.
Oh man was it so hot and so clod all at the same time and it tasted soooo gooood.
It kicks the pants off and makes regular Horchata child's play.

It's "RUM - CHATA" and it kicks . You can get it at most liquor stores I'm told.
Sorry no pic but if you ask for it you will find it sooner or later.

Happy tasting

Andrew was in Mountain View yesterday. I tried to take him to a local joint for lunch and "Dirty Larry's".

The place I selected was apparently too high-falutin to have a Horchata fountain so we made due with tequila.....before beginning the tour of the classiest bus stations, dive bars and impound yards in San Jose.....

long story and I shall only repeat it in person, with whisky.

geez, I have been drinking Horchata, limonadas etc etc since I was little boy.... lol!! as for Mexican food that's popular in my area is Santiagos, Azadores, Real de minas, no shortage of great Mexican food!! For menudo... El rancherito, taco loco, café Chihuahua... For tacos, taco's & salsas, and the aforementioned places. Chipotle, Qdoba are considered a decent fast food around here.. way better then a hamburger and fries! I recently went to Chihuahua Mexico and there fast food scene is amazing!! but in opinion Santiago's chile fries hot with chicharonnes and a side of refried beans is the best!!

If a Mexican food place has Horchata, it usually a sign that their food is more authentic and very good!

I LOVE Mexican food. One trip to Puerto Vallarta for 16 days, I gained 13 pounds lol !
