Im trying to figure the best master cylinder options for a C-5 brake install on my 66 442 - A-body.
I have the stock vette master cylender and need to know if it can be used as non power.
I have 3 options due to valve cover clearance and cam shaft size - low vac.

Manual brake - wich master will work for this aplication
Hydroboost - I have purchased a new G-body deisal unit that needs complete conversion - will the vet master work with this?

or a electric vacuum pump of some kind set up with a small diameter booster.

Any thought or comments.
I have a fairly tight budget to finish this and Im leaning toward a manual master cylinder that will work with 4 wheel disc C-5 conversion.

No first-hand experience, but from reading around I believe you're going to want a 15/16" (or smaller) bore master cyl if you go with manual brakes. The stock C5 vette master is 1" and will be very hard to get lockup without power assist, even with the better pedal ratio of the manual brake setup. I think some folks have had issues with the 15/16" bore being too stiff as well.

Seems some folks have successfully used a late-model quick takeup master with 15/16" bore (from 88 S10 4cyl with manual brakes) but you'll need to do something to keep the pushrod from falling out. There have also been discussions about using a master from a 77 malibu (Cardone 101639) The Malibu master is cast iron with 15/16" bore and a deep pushrod hole for manual brakes, but you need to use the rearmost port for the front brakes and the frontmost port for the rear brakes.

Info from DavidPozzi on the S-10 master here: http://www.pozziracing.com/quick_take_up_master_cyl.htm#Quick%20Take%20Up%20M aster%20Cylinder%20for%20Manual%20Brakes

You could also look into something like the Wilwood alloy master cyl -- they have a 7/8" bore that I think would work (260-9439) but they're kind of expensive...

Once again -- I don't have any first-hand experience here, just relaying what I've read while doing all my brake research...

I use a c4 corvette (92 vintage) master cyl on a 7" dual diaphram booster with C5 brakes. 15/16" bore, works well. The holes needed to be openned a bit to make it fit the booster. On the next car, same thing, 8" dual diaphram booster just for a bit more boost. -Dan

thanks.. If it helps, I have best luck on 3/16 line with the cheapo fixed benders that fit in the palm of your hand. Save the big bender for the larger line.

my problem now is trying to find the fitting p/n's for the metric to us adapters I used - so I can do it again on the 69 project...

if you plan on doing it more than once, or don't want to use an unsightly adaptor

or search for any other manf/supplier. Of course, the adaptors are only a few dollars compared to the price of a tool

This was the car that started it all for me - purchased in 1984 it was my first car and restored when I was 15, also my High school car.
It was sold during college and I was lucky enough to get it back when I returned. So now I have some money it will be a pro tour style build with TKO600 - ATS spindles and C-5 brakes. Suspension is going to be stiff springs and sway bars, fast ratio steering. Im looking for rims now I think I settled on TT2s in 20" .
Power will be all olds - 425 Aluminum rod build with roller cam and fuel injected. Should be a solid 600hp, I have been gathering parts for some time and plan the build this winter.
I have a 66 convertable also but it needs !!!! Love.
Its a very clean car you have there hopefully you stay with olds power. We are a dying breed.

No experience with C5 in a manual. I have C5 front and C4 rear on my 69 Camaro. I'm using the stock disc/drum MC with Hydroboost, 2 1/8" bore. It is amazing.

thanks, that saved some time! The metric bubble flare tool is a good idea too - I'm sure someone must sell the tube nuts to go with it?

Very cool. Sounds like we are building similar themes. I plan on a TK0600 with a 475-500ish HP 455. I already have lots of goodies from SC&C sitting in boxes along with C6 brakes
