Hey guys,
Im going to be spraying a truck pretty soon in a dark blue metallic (bc/cc)and was wondering what tips you could give me for spraying a dark colord metallic. I have been painting for a couple of years (on the side for friends) and have done some lighter metallic paint jobs that turned out good, but iam a little nervous about spraying such a dark colored metallic over a light grey primer.I did a hood with a similair color and it came out sort of light and you could see some of the spray lines. Ive heard you should shoot in a different directions to keep the metallic even and not cause lines, and also to lay down a final "mist coat" to even out the metallic, is that right? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys,
Brian

You just need to put on enough coats to completely cover it. Then you can worry about spray patterns and tiger stripes. Some colors are VERY transparent and need a lot of coats to cover. You can also get tinted sealer that can help with color coverage. After you get the color covered you can turn up the pressure a bit and fog it on lighter. I'm kinda oversimplifying it but, I hate typing! Last all this depends on what brand basecoat you are using. Some kinds have different tips to them than others.

so does a light "mist coat" actually help with evening out the metallic?

The light mist coat will help you even out the metallic after you're sure it's completely covered. On the last coat turn the fluid knob down about half a turn, increase your spraying distance and your speed. Also be careful on the panel to panel overlap so that you don't get dark spots, fan those areas. It should look "chalky" before you clear.
