what is the proper amount of play for the pinion and rings gears when setting up a gm 8.5" 10 bolt? I heard .008-.012" for ring gear to pinion gear clearance is accecptable.

I prefer them tight as well, I always try to run them as close to the lower limit as possible.

what about setting up the pinion gear initially? i am planning on using shims as opposed to the crush collar system, is this way better?

you use the shims between the inner bearing and pinion to set pinion depth then the crush sleeve is to set the pinion bearings pre load. i like to set to 22-25 inlbs rotating torque.

Lash should also be tuned for the weight of the oil used. If you use a 90wt... 0.008" is good; if you use 140wt... 0.010". This will help with getting enought oil into the set to help combat the impact loading.
A solid spacer is the prefered component for performance use. It will definately negate and preload changes like that of the crush type pieces.

First time I've heard of using a solid spacer. Do you just set it to the same rolling torque?

Don't you mean inch pounds?

Ratech makes the solid "crush sleeves". They also have shims to put behind the bearign race vs behind the bearing if a press isn't handy.

Don't you mean inch pounds? yep your right. Torque to 200ftlbs then tighten further to get 25 inlbs in rotational torque.
Solid spacer sounds like a good idea. Havent used one yet.
So you put the shim behind the outer bearing race?
