Anyone with a 64-72 GM A-Body running the front Varishock coil over conversion?if so what was your experience and are you satisfied with it?
Thanks

I've installed a pair, nice pieces. The monoball top mount is a big step-up from a QA1-style setup that places the spring in the stock frame perch.
Fit and function is great. However, it won't go "in the weeds" because the monoball top pivot cuts into total available spring height & shock travel.
If you're going to drop up to 2-3" or so they're nice pieces. Beyond that I'd suggest standard springs or modding your frame to allow the coilover to sit up higher.

Aha!you dont recommend them on a car that will be about 1-2" dropped??
Thanks

Maybe Marcus from SC&C will chime in on this for us.

1"-2" drop with them is just fine, 3" is starting to push things. It's when guys shave the bumpstops down and try to get say 4" of drop is when they will run out of bump travel.

What control arms are you guys using?
Thanks

There are a lot of folks running them and we haven`t had any complaints so far. The critical thing is to make sure they`re set up properly and have enough bump travel when installed. Stock arms make this hard because the shock mountings boss is raised about 3/4". The true coilover (vs. hybrid) design of the Varishock makes it a little more difficult too. We took a two pronged approach to the issue but having Varishock build us a shorter OAL coilover that still uses common length springs and allows up to 7" of wheel travel. Then we have to looked to the lower arms. Most aftermarket lower A arms intended for QA1 coil overs will work because they mount in the same manner. The arms should also have proper bumpstops to prevent bottoming the shocks, this is always a good idea coil over or no. That`s pretty much all there is to it. The new tubular lower A arms we designed with SPC that will be out in a couple weeks were designed with the Varishock coil overs in mind, should be simple plug and play and allow even lower ride heights. The only other question and concern i have about the Varishock front coil over conversion was does the coilover just get held up top by the original shock mount location?isnt that way too much load just for that area?unlike the QA1`s where the spring actually sits in the upper part of the control arm?

Just got them in today, they look really neat i`d have to say but the only concern i`m having is that it doesnt look like there is enough shock travel?will they bottom out you think?
Thanks

Hey George. :) I don`t know if I should reply to these posts or not because we`ve covered all of this on the phone already but I suppose other folks reading would like to hear it too.
I covered the travel thing in a previous post on this thread. These coil overs offer about 7" of wheel travel which is way more than you need for almost any application. Unless you`re planning to run your GS at Baja or reenact scenes from the Dukes of Hazard...
As far as the upper mounting system. The upper shock mount is very beefy, especially when reinforced by the Varishock bearing mounts. Properly installed all loads are cushioned by the shock also. They`ve proven over the last several years to be very durable. Alston developed these to aleviate all of the side loading and other issues with the QA1 system. You`ll find plenty of threads here on that subject. The secret with ANY coil over conversion is to make sure that they`ve got the proper installed height and bump stops to prevent the coil over from bottoming out in jounce. That`s why we use this length coil over and why the height of the lower mount in the LCA is critical. It`s also why we take a one on one approach with every order to make certain that the end user is aware of all the details and gets them right the first time.
The new SPC lower arms are still a couple weeks out AFAIK. I`ll know better tomorrow when everyone at SPC is back from SEMA. Those who got on the pre order list will get theirs from this first production batch. Those who don`t may be out of luck. Mark SC&C

Hey Marcus, got the whole suspension completely done today and i lowered the car off the jack stands for the first time since its old original suspension,my only concern is this now the coilovers are not adjusted all the way up there`s 3-4 threads showing on the varishock but get this, the car has no engine or drivetrain and she`s sitting WAYYYY low can you imagine when i put the drivetrain in?she`ll be rubbing the ground, you think she`ll go up more if i adjust it more??oh and that spaner wrench that i bought doesnt work for **** it doesnt seem to be correct??
Thanks
