So i started getting into cars after high school and decided i had to have a 69 camaro. So i got a piece of crap project car... and in my stupidity i thought it wouldnt take more than a few months to build, on a college kids budget... i knew nothing hahaha:banghead: "im a moron"
but unfrtunantly i didnt come from a car family so i had to learn as i went.
so heres where i started... (I tried to include lots of pics as i noticed people on this forum seem otlike lots of pics, me too haha)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/Picture3751-1.jpg

from there it took 2 years of body work
including a new quarter, new fender, new hood, shaved emblems, marker lights, and doors, body filled a few seems, and leaded the rotting roof

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/PB140015-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/havasu2007023-1.jpg

from there it started to look like a halfway decent primered car

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/3-2.jpg

it got 4 wheel disc brakes, new suspension including sway bars, z28 leaf spring, two inch lowering coils, polyuerathane bushings and a quick ratio power sterring unit, and rims and tires

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/IMG_0068-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/IMG_00451-1.jpg

it also got converted to a 2 seater, racing seats, new stereo and all that fun stuff

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/IMG_00311-1.jpg

i just painted it a few weeks ago at my schools auto shop, raing stripes coming in a few weeks

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/IMG_0031-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/IMG_0065-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/IMG_0064-1.jpg

i also have an LT1 and t56 sitting in my garage that im beefing up 2 drop in the girl, but alas i have run dry of money of rnow, so hopefully ill have enough by christmas...

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/IMG_0063-1.jpg

so what do u think so far, ill keep posting as i get the engine ready and the new stripes on, along with other small projects

Im going to be painting a unique glossy black stripe that starts as two stripes and merges into one, not sure how im gonna do the trunk lid yet though, but the tail light area will also go black

I really like the idea on your hood, but I wouldn't try to tie in the trunk lid. I would just paint the hood and tail panel. Looks like your on the right track, keep us updated with info and photos.

well i decided to just continue the dual stripes from the hood down the tail and not bring them together like the front...

Ill post some pics of it tomorrow afternoon after school, with any luck ill be paintin the stripes either this saturday in auto shop or next saturday at the latest.

well , theres no going back now, i went through a few different ideas to figure out how i wanted to do the back, and heres what ive decided. Let me know what you think.

Ill more than likely be painting it this saturday in my school auto shop and then get it pin striped to take care of any problems.

the hood and back panel would look pretty nice in flat black. just a thought.

and you are doing pretty well for being in college and working on the car at the same time. my project was almost completely at a standstill while i was still in school!

Man - You really did a great job on the paint...

can you go through the steps that you took to get it all done?

Filler, Primer, etc. that you used and that steps that you took. Your paint really turned out great!

Ummm, well lets see...

The first thing i did was take the car down to bare metal using a daul action sander and about 8 trillion sheets of 80 grit sand paper.
On everything i diod though i tried to fix on panel at a time. Let me tell you it makes things much much better if u completly finish one panel at a time.

Then i pulled out any dents and then used bondo to take car of any small dents or inconsistencies in the bare metal.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/PB060002-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/P9190025-1.jpg

I welde up my marker lights, antenna hole, and the door handles to get a sleeker, more custom look.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/PA0401981-1.jpg

After the panel was smooth i covered it in primer( 4 to 5 coats). I used PPG NCP 280, it more expensive than your average primer but totally worth it. I ended up using about a gallon on the entire car.
From there i block sanded the entire body with 150 then again with 220 and then 320.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/P7260012-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/8-1.jpg

No matter how much time u spend on body work in the begining you will find problems while block sanding, you can fix smaller ones with a few extra lairs of paint. Bigger ones with bondo.

once the body was ready i took off the doors to paint the door jams, i would not recommend this unless you have really bad door jams as the doors are a bitch to realine. When urr eady to paint u coat it in a sealer and then away you go with the paint.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/P72600141-1.jpg

I would reccomend getting at least a goallon and a half of paint, i had only one gallon and almost ruined my paint job by running out of paint. I did three coats of paint and 3 coats of clear. From there wet sand and buff with 1000, then 1500, then 2000.

well ive been pretty lucky and because of that ive been able to save alot of money and get discounted parts. Also ive done all my own work on the car, so thats saved thousands of dollars. That and i have good freinds to help me.

The only way ive had money is by sacraficing all my summers to work 60+ hour weeks to make cash for the car, thats where the suspension, wheels, brakes and new engine came from. It sucks, but i think the car will be worth it.

Oh god yes. this project would not even be halfway to where it is if it wernt for the great instructors i had or my local community colleges great auto shop program. The teachers took alot of time and pity on me haha but having all those resouces of the auto shop was a huge help.

heres a few pics of the car near the start. It began life with a vinyl top ( gag ) and had been hit in both the front and the drivers side quarter. The paint was soo bad that the first time i took a blow gun to it paint started flying off. It was sad but kind of funny to watch.

You're lucky your instructors let you bring that in and work on it! My auto body program was oriented more towards new cars - because they figure you're going to go work in a shop that does insurance stuff/new cars... You could only bring your own car in by special arrangement.
Unfortunately i got stuck on a huge project my last year, so i never had time to bring in my car and paint it. so although i know how to paint it, i'm gonna have to find a booth i can do it in.

I really like the color though! What color is it?

thats the exact opposite of my course. ITs called Customization and restoration and its a requirement to bring in a car to work on. IF you dont have a car to bring then you cant take the class.:naughty:

Its really awesome cus over half the cars in the class are muscle cars. this helps a huge amount in motivation because every time you walk around the shop you see all these other muscle cars being work on by their owners. you see there progression and it makes you want to work harder, its an amazing class. Plus your grade is dependent upon how much you do to your car.. haha :firefire:

the paint is actually a stock Nissan color. Its comes special order on the 350Z model. Its called daytona blue metallic clear coat.

Looks great! Nothing feels better than doing it yourself, and getting complements from others who know what a PITA it can be to build a car up.
That sounds like an awsome class, is it at OCC?
Your gonna love the LT1/T56. I've had mine running for about a year, and still get a thrill out of it firing up and running so tight.
I like it so much, I just got another LT1/4l60e for my '71 K5 yesterday. Have fun, let me know if you have any LT1 ???

the course is at goldenwest community college. ITs an awesome program ran by a guy named bud yeargain. HEs old as dirt but is the most amazing car builder ive ever seen. hes been buiding cutom cars since the 40s. its insane.

Id recommend checking it out to anyone whos local enough to come take it. youll learn an insane amount and get all the tools u need to work on your car. plus 3 paint booths.

ummm and mybe your thinking of santa ana college becasue OCC doesnt have automotive program of any type, thats why i take my auto classes at GWC.

all i can say is wow... i just checked out your build up and damn... that is a nice ass car... wish i had your budget haha
but thanks for the offer to help, im pretty sure im gonna need all the help i can get as this is my first engine swap and im doing it myself. So expect a good amount of questions in the near future haha

i was curious as to how you did the wiring harness, did you just buy a plug and play version or customize yours urself to make it work> ive found sites that go over the wiring harness so you can customize it yourself, but all those were for LT1/4l60e combos not LT1/T56. so if you know anything about that it would be a great help. thanks!

this last winter i finally got tired of the old back seat, although it was in great condition. I just didnt see the point; i never had a third passenger, but more importantly it was too small for any after hours fun and games... sad.

so i decided to remove the rear seat and build a little homemade new rear are. It includes a 12" sub, a nice kicker amp and wiring and a couple of nice 6x9 speakers. the really cool part was that by selling the original seat i made enough money fund this little project and still have soe left over.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/havasu2007011-1.jpg

i also sold the original buckets and got these seats... couldnt afford sparco or recaro unfortunatly and picked a carbon fiber dash and auto meter gauges. the rest of the interior is stock although i do plan to paint the paint the glove box area and install an 8 point roll cage...

THe school goes by semesters so the classes are 4 months long. The fisrt few classes are lectures and after that you just go to work on whatever you want on your car and the instructors help you.

The classes are Monday nad Wednesday from 7pm til 10pm
or
Tuesday and Thursday from 7pm til 10pm

they also offer a paint course which is how i painted my car and that goes from 8am til 430pm on saturdays. the time goes by rediculously quick

heres a link to all the auto body classes they offer.

Alright, so i finished painting my racing stripes today... yah!!!

and i have to say that masking off for stripes is ten times more difficult then when you do it for full car paint.

yeah... for right now though im just trying to decide between a thin black stripe abouta 1/4 of an inch on the outside around the stripes, or to have an offsetting color right on the edge of the stripes, adn what color i would use for that...

im open to suggestions!

def. the thin black stripe, a diffrent color I think would be to much. I think that you should do the stripe around all the black not just the trunk stripes.

i think the reason u are not liking the stripe on the back is because it is not ran all the way to the back window. i think it would look much better if it was ran to the back window. dont get me wrong your car is still sick as fu** for suer!!!

Thanks guys, love the comments... kinda glad i could start some controversial opinions from people... makes me feel special hahaha

anyways, rear bumper went back on today. along with the new windshield. getting rid of the cracked windshield made me very happy.

no ****ing respect! that pissed me off!

That's bull**** bro I feel for you. I'd be pissed as hell if they did that. I too agree that the rear stripes need to go all the way up to the window, it would look more complete. That gap just doesn't look right to me.

today the trim, which has been powder coated black like the stripes, will go back on. I think this will make the stripes look alot better and help with the flow of the lines. Ill post some pics of it later and u guys can let me know if that affects you opinions of the stripes.

take care and keep up the posts of your cars!

ok, so i got a bunch of dinky stuff done on the car. But more importantly i got my newly powder coated 90% gloss black trim back and on the car.

I really think this will help the flow of the stripes in both the front and the rear. I think it also helps the car look a little darker and meaner. Let me know what you think.

Next up, besides wet sanding and buffing, is the engine and tranny install. I don't have enough money for now to do the install but ill post updates on the engine as i build it. Take care guys and good luck with everyones cars!

I picked up the carbon fiber dash from Classic Industries in Huntington beach California. They have great stuff there, a little on the expensive side but all there stuff is great. I also got the RPM and Speedo gauge here. The other four are from the generic brands at pep boys, but they all fit in perfectly with no modification...

Its a special nissan color that came optional on the 350Z car. Its called Daytona Blue Metallic Clearcoat. Its paint code is B17 for PPG and i dont know the code for Dupount. I used Dupound and am very happy with it...

all i can say is wow... i just checked out your build up and damn... that is a nice ass car... wish i had your budget haha
but thanks for the offer to help, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna need all the help i can get as this is my first engine swap and I'm doing it myself. So expect a good amount of questions in the near future haha

i was curious as to how you did the wiring harness, did you just buy a plug and play version or customize yours yourself to make it work> Ive found sites that go over the wiring harness so you can customize it yourself, but all those were for LT1/4l60e combos not LT1/T56. so if you know anything about that it would be a great help. thanks!

Thanks a lot, it was a lot of work to get it where it is, and its not even close to where I want it yet.

I modified the harness myself, and had the PCM flashed by pcmforless.com , the do great tuning. It looks like a lot of crap, and it is, but once you pull all the looming off, and separate it out, you only need to hook up a dozen or so wires, the rest can be removed, or taped off for later( like AC signal, fuel pump prime, etc.)
All the schematics I used can be found on this page http://shbox.com/1/schematics_wiring.html #'s 1,2,47, and 48 primarily ( #2 has tabs at the bottom, like ms office, to see all the plugs) Basically, you need to hook up power and grounds where needed, and gages. T56 and auto have the same basic harness, just a few different plugs on the trans. the plug diagrams will say "manual" or "automatic". I used those diagrams to label all the wires, then cut off the plugs( the ones that went to the dash, not the plugs to the PCM), and grouped the wires I needed, and removed the ones I didn't.
OR......
http://www.lt1350.com/ had auctions on ebay for a pcm flash, and harness mods for 250 bucks, but they don't seem to be there at the moment.

so im very happy, i finally got most of my trunk painted and it was one thing that i always hated. Just primer rust and distgustingness.

I originally wanted to have it sprayed with rhino liner. But the shops around here wanted 350 bucks to do it. They said because masking my trunk would be difficult... I masked off my trunk in 10 minutes. Did it myself with zolotone in less then an hour. IM gonna spray the underside of the trunk lid to match and my wheel wells with some balck rubbuerized undercoating this weekend.

i also like the way they look when they go over the spoiler but i wanted something a little different as you see those same stripes on just about ever Camaro ever made.

As for the underside of the trunk, the reason is two fold. It'll be something unique and much more durable then paint for when things roll around in my trunk.... that and i'm out of paint and money, the Zolotones much cheaper than paint hahhaha

but if it turns out hideous then ill just sand it off nad repaint it blue when i have the cash.

right now i'm saving money for the LT1 swap, i just got my new bearings and piston rings, my comp cams cc-305 cam should arrive any day and now i just need some cash for roller rockers, then it all goes back together.

Sorry to hear about the engine failure. I had a question, what did you use again for that trunk? (Brand Wise) Price?

69camarokid
11-26-2007, 07:44 AM
I used a produst called zolotone, the specific color is onyx black. I sprayed the whole trunk with only a quart of paint, which was 36 bucks at the local paint shop.

Rediculously cheap considering i looked into having rhino liner sprayed and the lowest quote i got for it was 350. they said because of prep time to tape off the car, but Zolotone doesnt carry so i only had to tape off the trunk.

Its great stuff and id highly recommend it!

well they actually control the loan on my camaro... so i refinanced that to have them gove me some more cahs up front to work on the car with and they just added it onto my existing loan.

It was pretty awesome when they looked up my kelly bluebook value and stated that no matter the condition or engine, the bluebook was a minimum of 17K so theyd be hapy to lend me as much as was needed hahah

including:
cc-305 cam
918 beehive springs
new radiator and fan
1.6 roller rockers
rebuild kit
new head bolts
new timing chain
and a kit to install the t56

all that fun stuff with more to come... im trying to bust out the entire swap during my two week winter break starting this next week. But its alot of work for two weeks... guess well just see what happens

next up is to pull everything else out of the engine bay and spray it a nice semi-gloss black color. i think that'll look cool.

now i just need to jury rig the new radiator and fan, shorten the drive shaft, install the new return fuel line and fuel pump, cut a hole for the t56, run the new wiring harness... oh yeah, and build the engine... haha no problem!

heres the start of the new engine... went form this...

looks pretty good....if you ever get the chance in the future, say next winter, i say pull off the whole front clip and rebuild the front, looks like youve got the engine nailed, and youve got the body work and paint done, get that subframe powdercoated black and but some dse controll arms and youll be sitting pretty!!! again though it looks great, glad to see your really making some progress!

69camarokid
12-25-2007, 12:35 PM
i redid most of the suspension about a year and a half back, but due to the beautiful and ever popular budget ( or lack of one ) the suspension in the front was limited to polyurethane bushings all around, a fatter sway bar, discs with new spindles, new shocks and lowering coils. also all new steering components.

I really would love some tubular arms and coilovers....
...but then id also really like an LS7 and a Hot Rods to Hell truck arm suspension for the rear..

the back got polyurethane everything, new shocks, Z28 reproduction leafs... and thats about it.

...ah, to be done with school and actually have money, o well, just more fun for the future i suppose.

So basically ive been working overtime to get parts done on the car... as for the engine, im still waitin on my uncle to get better an come over and help me finish.

so far i dropped the subframe and have now replace every single bushing in the suspension with polyuerathane, good times!

also ive got my short block back together. I cleaned everything with a fine wire wheel, then honed the cylinders, replaced the crank bearings and the main bearings, and put new rings on the pistons!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/01/PC280017-1.jpg

next i spent 4 hours cleaning the heads with a drummel and wire wheel haha also replaced the springs with comp cams beehive 918 springs, new retainers and seals, they look much more badass than the old ones!

Hey kid, you are doing one hell of a nice job man. I have been reading this thread for a while and I have to say GOOD JOB!

When you started this thread, it was about the time I got my LS1/T56 to replace my ole 383 LT1/4L60E. If you need any info on the LT1 swap, let me know and I'll help you out the best I can.

I will say one thing tho......you see that big black box on the front lower left of the engine with the two hoses coming out of it in the above pic? It has to do with smog and you should not need it, but I could be wrong because you are in OC. Don't know if you absolutly have to have it to be legal of course.

Again, good job, keep it up! I hope my car looks that good one day.

I was working on my first Camaro project when I was about your age. Really impressed with your progress being in college! Make sure you have an agreed value insurance policy and you can add value to the policy as you dump money into the car. Don't ask me why I am recommending an agreed value policy. :banghead:

Here is a picture of the car that robbed me of every penny I made for three years. It was freshly painted and had a good interior when I bought it. Mechanically it was a mess. Rebuilt all suspension, brakes, engine, tranny, painted underside, engine compartment, etc...

great looking car. and i know how hard it is to build a car and go to school. you spend most nights in the dorm looking at stuff for the car, about the car, or thinking on it, and only occasional weekend doing something. until you run out of money. so good job getting this far. took me three years out of school to get mine on the road. also, may i suggest a thorough underhood detail? hide as much of the harness as you can, clean and paint the components strapped to the motor, and remove anything your state doesnt require for inspection. make the sheer good looks of an LT1 shine through, as they are really good looking motors.

Great job!! It wasnt that long ago, well 9 years ago but nowdays it seems like yesteday, when I built my first car just the way you are. I worked my a$$ off at Safeway as a courtesy clerk for 7.50 an hour from 5pm to 2am 5 days a week to pay for my car. Going to the drags and seeing all the hondas there made me have to build a car that could beat every last one of them. I spent 20k over 2 years and ended up with a car that ran 12.2s on street tires and looked great. I was helped out along the way by a few shops that I now do buisness with, but back then I was just roys son and they would let me use their booth or a press for bushings ect cause they did buisness with my dads shop. I wanted to do absolutely everything myself for the pride of it and for the cost savings. In the end it turned out just the way I wanted and I learned ALOT. Also I highly recommend keeping the car as long as you can. I sold mine off to be able to finish school but looking back I could have found other ways to pay for it. I really miss the car and wish I still had it. Youll be able to say this was my first car and I did everything myself on it. Once again great job and props for learning a great trade.

With the help of a good buddy i was able to get the tranny installed yesterday just as the sun finished falling! lucky timing. over th next few days im going to start attatching all the wiring and install my hydrolic clutch syatem and get the measurements to get my driveshaft cut.

hope to have the car running by the end of march, though it probably wont be streetable for a while still...

then its ricer frying time!

WOW... tranny installs are a bitch!!!!

i would have to say that installing the T56 in my car, esspecially the crossmember, was by far the most frustrating thing i have done to my car so far....

thanks god its done.
ill post up some picks of it tommorrow

Tomoorw ill finish up my hydrolic clutch install

OK, so the hydrolic clutch is installed. Must have spent the better part of an hour grinding with my dremmel to make a big enough hole in the firewall to let it fit.

Next up i have my B&M ripper short shifter that should arrive tomorrow and soon after my new carbon fiber shift knob, looks sick! thanks to phil , the guy withthe skyline powere 240 on here, who got it for me for my birthday.... (i dunno, maybe he thinks that with this kind gesture i wont smoke him to badly at the track... he'd be wrong) haha

Nice project. I too have many good memories of my Camaro and college. I can't tell them all to my wife or kids.

Unfortunately you learned the hard way that it is far easier to install the engine and trans as an assembly. Even if you had to cut a hole in the floor you could have still installed it as an assembly. Throw a wet towel over the trans and start carefully cutting with a $20 Harbor Freight 4" angle grinder.

this shop, drivelines unlimited came to my house, took the measurements for my new driveshaft, took away the old one.
now theyre gonna cut it, weld it, balance it, and paint it and return it back to my door for 95 bucks!

all within a 24 hour period!
pretty damn sweet!

also got my short shifter installed, very nice!
and i just ordered my new pedal assembly since my old mechanical linkage throttle assembly wont work well withthe new engine... sucks that i have to spend more money, but isnt it damn sexy!?

ok, so i have got alot of work done on the car duing spring break, but imn back in school which means its all gonna slow daown agin... ugh!

but i got a few brackets make and installed to hold the ECU as well as the power steering resivoir. Ill post some pics of that later. I got most of the wiring done. IM just waiting on the wiring to arrive for me to install the fans.

Got my trunk mounted battery installed and picked up a badass optima yellow top battery! Now i just need to find a way to secure it. Pulled the fuel line and gas tank yesterday so i can build my return fuel line. Once i have the return fuel line in as well as the positive lines fuel pump hten i should bew able to start the car.

Oh, and my new drive shaft arrives tomorrow. New O2 sensor and subframe connectors should be here soon as well!

Im thinking maybe 2-3 more weeks til this bad boy is on the streets!!!! of course with the way projects go its very possible that 2-3 weeks means 2-3 months hahaha lets hope not!

Most of the car meets happen friday nights on Main St. In garden Grove. They have a good sized car show, awards, bands, all that fun stuff. But my favorite meet is every saturday morning from the crack of dawn (too early i know) til about 9 on the corner of Adams and Magnolia in Huntington Beach. Thers usually a 150+ cars there, everything from muscle cars to street rods, to supercars and the occassional badass import. good stuff

Nice progress BTW, as a fellow college kid I know how a busted budget can be, I'm avoiding loans for the moment

The alternator came withthe engine and tranny when i pulled them, so i have no idea if it is stock or not. Hell, i havent fired the engine up yet, so technically i dont even know if it works or not hahah

yeah, taking out a loan kinda freaked me out, but since they attatched it to my existing car loan the interest is only like 6.5 percent, so its not too bad. I avoided the loan for the forst 2 and a half years, but to build the engine i needed a bigger budget, so it was loan or save money for another year. im pretty happy with the loan... wattaya building?

the loan is for the camaro. I took the loan out right after i turned 19, the loan was for 8600 bucks, along with the 1900 i had saved up to pick up my camaro. I have almost three years of my loan payed off before i got a cash advance of 2150 from the bank, which was then added onto my car loan.

sucks having loan payments, but my baby's worth it.

OK.. so of course on my one day off of school and work im stuck running around trying to get parts and tools... waste of a good day to work on the car.:banghead:

But i did get my new power steering lines made, to use my 95 resivoir and pump with my 69 steering unit. so thats cool.

i also got my new fan kit installed that automatically kicks my fans on when the engine hits 185 degrees. also got my headers and exhaust intalled as well as some brackets i fabbed up to hold the ECU and power steering resivoir.

Ok, so my trunk battery is now mounted in my incredibly sexy and high tech Peop boys battery tray. haha

Fuel lines are now installed and held in place perfectly.

Custom lines made to mate my 95 power steering resivoir and pump with my 69 quick ratio power steering unit. I had mno idea getting lines made could be so expensive... 140 bucks.

I finished up all the wiring on my car and cut out all the A/C wiring out of the wiring loom.

Tomorrow ill be installing my new sub frame connectors and rear sway bar, along with building a bracket to hold my radio in the dash.

Now other than some gas all i need to get my car running is my optispark sesnsr that shoulb be here either tomorrow or tuesday... im hoping tomorrow!

I put my 69 camaro project on hold until I'm out of college since I have no good place to work on it. I did however finish up a LT1/T56 swap on it a few years ago. Let us know how it runs. well today was the big day... i spent most of the morning and early afternoon putting back on the front end of my car, getting it ready to go.

I waited in anticipation waiting for the UPS guy who cam around 5 to drop off the last little electical part i needed (optispark connector).

I pooped that bad boy, hopped in the car and got ready to fire my newly built engine for the very first time.

...
...
... all i got was a fuel leak!!!!!!
aaaggghhhhhhhh!!!!!

i found the leak nad thats no biggy, but i didnt even get an attempt from the engine to start, obviously im thinking something along the lines of some wiring issues running between the ignition nad the starter... or at least i hope.

But im stuck at school all day tomorrow so hopefully i figure it out wednesday!

Tried toi start her up yesterday and got nothing. So tomorrow ill be trouble shooting all day. But before i take her out anywhere i need to have my car reapraised by my insurance.
Right now i have a a 10K cap, so if it gets hit or totalled they only give me 10K, im going back in to have it reset at 35K or so... but if something happens before then... then id be screwed like no tomorrow. SO im doubtingh this weekend, but soon for sure!!!

ok...

so after about two weeks of electrical i got my baby running. She sounds mean as hell; motor just sounds angry. i love it. So of course i took her out on a maiden voyage around the neighborhood. Very fun.
Of course though i could hear the rockers clicking (need to adjust those) and it kept wanting to die at times (fuel regulation). But all in all it was just amazing to drive something i built with my own two hands.

Upon getting back i realized that the starter was attempting to continuously engage while the engine was running. needless to say, not good.

after a lot more work i realized that the electrical is just beyond me at this point and it is more intelligent to have it done right then to risk doing it myself.

So the car was towed to a friends electrical shop to fix the problems and redo my ****ty attempt at wiring. The nice thing is my friend, instead of just doing it himself and charging me a ****load, is going to let me do all the work this Wednesday at his shop under his supervision so i can learn an to do it for a lower price. I'm very excited.

his shop is pretty awesome, on one side you have Porsche's, on the other you have all muscle cars... good stuff.

My computers a bitch so ill have to load up the pics of everything later.

ive got some pics from the shop already, but my internet is all messed so i cant get them to post, but ill use another computer and put them up soon.

The shop is called D&S Auto Air over off the 55 in Costa mesa. They specialize in air conditioning and electrical work but they do just about everything.

Ill take some pics of the cars, when was there on saturday there were two Rivieras, a lemans, my camaro, a cougar, some old rolls Royce, an old 911, a Malibu and some sweet old ford, cant remember what the ford was but it had a 429BB with dual quads sticking out of the hood and slicks... very sick!

04-17-2008, 12:23 PM
ok so i awear everything electronic hates me. My internet barely wants to work, and photobucket wont let me upload any photos!

so as it stands right now it turns out from electricain that i did actually wire the car correctly (guess theres a forst time for everything:) ) But theres some problem between the PCM and my ignition module. When in the starter on position the car will start but when the key flips back to the power on position the car immediatly dies. The PCM (im told) stops sending the signal to the ignition module so it stops firing optispark, if i understand correctly. Right now my electrical guy is talking with PCM for less who did my tuning.

Im so tired of all this, im playstation generation man!!!! Im not good at patience. AND three years later here i am, almost done!!!!! arghhhhh. Ive been working my entire adult life on this car... i just want to burn some rubber, come on god throw me a bone here!

STORY TIME...
SCARIEST **** EVER... (ok, so maybe not ever, but still)

This happened about two weeks ago, before i sent my car to the shop. I was woke up around 8 by my neighbor Jeff who proceeded to tell me this story.
around 4:45- 5:00 he was out front reading his paper (hes an early bird) when he saw an old, beat to hell pick up truck full of guys slowly creep down the street and stop in the middle of the street directly in fron of my house. There were four, as he put it, gang banger looking guys, in the truck. they then got out of the truck and started walking up to my camaro. (it was parked in reverse in front of my house as the engine wasnt running yet.)

they were just a few feet from my car when they saw jeff. As he put it, they then started staring him down, he did the same to them nad pulled out his phone. After a 30 second or so standoff the guys went back to their truck nad left quickly. Now at this point it could have just been that they wanted to see the car, but as they pulled away he said that on the bed of their truc they had built in a makeshift towing hook.

Now i dont know about the rest of you guys, but that **** scares me!!! and on top of that, i need to get my insurance reupped, because right now i have a signed agreeance with my insurance company that if anything happens to my car they wont insure me for anything over 10K. I have 29K into the car!!!!! plus i still owe 5K tothe bank o the car loan. SO if it gets stolen i basically get 5 grand and thats all she wrote. I have a meeting for next week though to get my car reappraised now that its running.

anyone else ever have anything like that ever happen to them?

For right now the car is at my buddys shop getting some electrical fixed, When it gets back it will be living in the garage until my dad gets his Nova painted... at that point im pretty sure hell be kicking me back out on to the driveway since theres only enough room in our garage for one car... barely.

but by then ill have kills switches wired in and have lojak installed, and probably a club on the wheel at night, and ill be sleeping a much more soundly...

guess its true what they say. the first 90 percent of the project takes 90 percent of the time, the other 10 percent takes the other 90 percent of the time!!!!

arghhhhhh!!!!

and BAM i found my to wiring problems and now the car starts, runs, and the starts doesnt constantly stay engaged.... yah team!

now for my new set of problems... they never end hahaha.

my roller rockers arnt adjusted right and i can hear them clacking alot.
The car dies...alot when its not being given gas. So i need to adjust it to get more fuel... not quite sure how to go about doing that so if any of you know, feel free to share.

it could also be a vacuum leak. almost every time I've done major work on an engine I end up w/ a vacuum leak somewhere, and it dies when idling.

check the TPS and the IAC sensor. i would not drive the car with the rockers making noise. it depends when you adjust them what the lash has to be set at. look at the cam specs and see what they say.

talked to my uncle, who happens to build LT1 engines for the local city police cruisers. HE had mentioned that before i go all gung ho on the engine i should take into consideration that i have done a large amount of mods to the engine, requiring more fuel and air.

HE said that since the OBDII in the lt1 is a self learning computer there was a good chance that after i had driven the car a good 30 miles or so that the computer syste mwould learnt the engine and begin to give the gas appropriatly.

Which kind of makes sense since it was wanting to die alot when i first stsrted my test drive, but it seemed to cut back nad nearly stop doing it once i was near the end of my drive. Ill take it out again tomorrow and see how it handles.

you have an aftermarket TB on the car? if so i have been hearing ppl are having problems with the cars wanting to die. example say your driving and go to brake and the car wants to idle down real low and sounds like its going to shut off. cause that my problem with my car. have you checked the TPS reading?

I have a stock throttle body for now. After driving the car for about 5 miles it no longer tried to die at all and idled perfectly. I took it on a 15 ride and it ran perfectly with no problems!!!!! but my alternator isnt charging so i cant drive it now until that problem is solved. Ive heard i need to wire in a 470 ohm resistor between the alternator plug in and the voltmeter gauge.

is that what u did, how did you get ur alternator to charge???

hotrdblder
05-05-2008, 03:44 AM
does the gauge not work or is the battery not getting 14 volts when running? use multi meter at battery and at back of alternator

does the gauge not work or is the battery not getting 14 volts when running? use multi meter at battery and at back of alternator

I was only pulling 12.3 volts at the battery when running so the alternator wasnt charging. I solved this by wiring up a 470 Ohm resistor between the alternator wire and the voltmeter. This solved my problem and now im pulling a solid 13.7 Volts at eh battery. Its amazing that a 53 cent piece could save my alternator... good stuff.

SO NOW MY CAR IS RUNNING WITH NO REAL PROBLEMS... im sooooo happy. Still lots of little things to do. Plus i still need to install my rear sway bar, subframe connectors and get a radar detector, lowjack, 3.73 gears, and a positraction unit... so ill still be busy for a while.

but for now i just need to drive it a bit to get the computer to learn to idle correctly nad stop dying everytime i slow down. Should be good by wednesday afternoon.

hey camarokid, congrats on getting in running man, that is awesome. what did they say was the problem with your ignition, when it would start but die when the key turned to power on? did they give you a reason why that was happening?

i've been dying to know why that was happening man, come on, fill me in!!

HAHA.. ok, so part of the problem was that the PCM wasnt getting power to all systems all the time. The MAF and a few other key components were only getting power while the starter was on so when i went back to power only on those systems would lose power and the engine would die.

The solution turned out to be a problem. We wired those systems to all time power but that was causeing the battery to drain, so i wired up an on off switch, which now also works as a kill switch. so that works ok now.

for right now ive got the alternator working, since it wasnt charging before. Thanks to a 53 cent resistor te alternator now charges, yah! My only real problem now is that the car doesnt want to idle, ever time i come down, or slow down for a light the car dies... it just shuts right off.

a while ago the car ran fine after i had driven it about 10 miles or so, and it idled perfectly everytime. I was told this was because the computer is self learnin and had taught itself to idle correctly. I had to later remove the battery causing the memory to be wiped. Now ive put a good 30 miles on the car and i wont seem to relearn to idle correctly.

its is rather annoying... anyone know why???

wait...isn't that an LT1 motor? do you have a stock pcm? i'm pretty sure those are NOT self learning man. those are set from the factory. if you've done anything to the motor, cam swap, new heads, an aftermarket MAF, even exhaust and headers, you will need to get it tuned.

i believe i'm correct, but someone chime in if i'm wrong.

as far as dying when at idle. my 72 firebird did this, drove fine at cruise, but at idle wanted to shut off. my fuel vent line was plugged up. MAKE SURE you are properly vented, you have proper ground everywhere, and your pcm is tuned correctly.

keep me posted too bro!!

Yes the PCM has been tuned by PCMs for less. But now that u mention making sure the system is vented that reminds me that my gas cap isnt vented and it was causing m some problems with the old engine. and i know without it being vented that can cause the system to have to pull fuel harder... that may be my problem. ill go get a vented gas cap and see how that workd... thanks guys

do you have a part number on that resistor?

I dont have a part number for the resistor, but all you havve to do is go to any electronics store and ask for a 470 ohm 2 watt inline resistor and its around 50 cents and works wonders!!!

ok so heres the new problem.... seems like i get one every week! oh, wait... thats cus i do.

after using my volt meter i discovered that the PCM memory is losing power everytime the car is hut off. This explains why the PCM wasnt learning to idle right. Becasue when the PCm loses power the memory is woped clean.

So i took the wire for the PCM memory and removed it from its switched power source ( where it was spliced to a few other wires) and wired it to a constant battery source so it would always get power. theoretically this should solve my problem. But with the setup like this the engine wont start!!!! itll try nad try but wont turn on!!!! i checked the original wires that the memory wire was sliced into, thinking maybe they had lost power. But they were still getting 12.5 volts withe power on and 9.5 while cranking.

I then wired the Memory wire back to its switched power wire and the car started up immediatly! it makes no sense. nothin lost power. the memory just was given power all the time, like its supposed to!

my uncles coming over to check it out on wednesday, but im stumped.. any ideas?

ok, so its bee awhile since ive posted anything new, or even worked on the car... But then finals will do that to you.

So i recently went to the local pic a part and got a DLC, i think that means data link connector, nad wired that up to the ECU. luckily my uncle works as a mechanic for the garden grove police and was able to borrow a PCM scanner from his work.

According to the scanner my MAP sensor (manifold air pressure) wasnted beiong read by the PCM. upon further inspection i noticed one of the wires had been cut at some point and removed. So ill wire in a new one and maybe that will solve the problem, i sure hope so. its summer and i have a bad as muscle with a new engine thats needs to hit PCH... i also have a bad O2 sensor. with anyluck ill have the car idling tomorrow.... i sure hope so

Wow, it sure has been a while. Been busy all summer with my other project, a 2006 suzuki SV650S motorcycel i picked up to allow me to get throught the beautiful and ever popular oil crisis.

but as for the 'maro, shes recieved a new radiator, new alternator, a new 02 sensor to replace the defective one and a few other small odds and ends. but unfortunatly she still refuses to idle.

so since i recognize that this problem is beynd me i have sent to car to a freinds shop to deal with my lack of idling problem. Since hes a buddy and does on the cheap my car is kinda on the back burner at his shop so it may be a litle while til i get it back.... plus im pretty sure he sits it out front to attract people into the shop , hahah

Sorry its taken so long to get back to you.... My car is still in the shop. Its been busy there and my car has been sitting on the wayside. PLus ive been in alaska for a while, so thats made working on my car a bit difficult.

AS for the set up i have for my air tools its not somehting you can buy. My dad works at a place called Survivair, a place that builds and produces fire fighting equiptment. So ive been lucky enough to get whatever air supply and welding supplies i need to borrow from there for free. But its a pretty simple system. Just two air tanks with some release valves, connected and then using one hose with the right connector valve for my particular air tool.

yeah ive had this thread on here for quite some time. Unfortunatly due to school and work and the quarrels of real life my project has been slow going for the last 6 months. The fact ive been living the past few months in alaska hasnt really helped with it either lol

After numerous electrical problems the car was back in the shop. This time im keeping it there and giving my buddy the time to do it right. Sadly for me that means its been there for the last 5 months, making it kind of hard to get any work done on it. Im told the car will be ready to go next week some time. At that point ill be slapping on some subframe connectors that i picked up and then i need to work out my insurance on the car. After that ill be ordering a posi and 3.73 gears. Im trying to ge the car all ready to go by early march for the goodguys autocross and show at the OC fairgrounds in Southern California. Itll be my first time autocrossing and my first real time trying out the new engine. Im pretty excited but a little worried given the time table. I wont hav ethe time to fix andy new bugs that may pop up.

Future plans for the summer include a 58mm throttle body, porting the intake manifold, an airfoil, making a custom box and piping for the CAI, and a set of Lloyd Elliott LE2 LT1 heads. That should get me to the magic 400RWHP mark im gunning for. Also ill be picking up a Zex LT1 nitrous kit. But ill only be running a 75 shot as to not blow up the stock internals.

well thats all the plans anyways, ill be back to do regular updates again in the upcoming weeks as i ge the car back and parts come in.

so the day of awesomeness is finally arrived!!!! My car is back.... and she finally idles and doesnt die every 10 seconds YES!

So the issues turned out to be three fold
1. I had a few, nad by few i mean lots, of wiring issues. These have been taken car of and my engine bay looks a thousand times better.

2. My alternator kept taking a crap. Turns out LT1 alternators need some sor of risistor to keep them running. Alternator works just fine now.

3. My trottle body had sooooo much carbon build up that it would pretty much close completely at idle allowing little air in, not enough to idle with apperently.

But she works and i have a ridiculous amount of little issues to deal with. But for now im just gonna go outside and give her a nice wash and wax.

Pictures to follow soon.

that my friend is a damn good question...
my best guess is that i did pick it from a junkyard, and god knows how long it had been sitting there... I suppose its possible that it could have been some other type of buildup? Couldnt really think of anything else though.

While routing around under the car i found two loose tranny bolts, which i believe is why my tranny has been seeming to jump around so much. So those were tightened adn are now secure.

I took car of my exhaust leak. I couldnt believe it when i checked. I was missing one bolt from my passenger side header/exhaust collector and two from the driver side!!!! no wonder my exhaust sounded so choppy! So i replaced the gaskets which were fryed and got some new bolts. Sounds much healthier now.

Does anyone know what kind of mufflers these are by any chance. THey came with the car but have no markings on them. Im curious as to what kind they are but have no clue?

so today i woke up to a letter from Safeco telling me that they had cancelled my insurance policy and they sent me a check for the remainder of my insured period.

Needless to say, i was not exactly thrilled. It had taken me almost three months to find a classic car insurance that would except me and so i was not happy to find this letter. Nearly every classic policy dictates that you must be at least 25 and theyll only match your daily driver insurance coverage. My daily driver is a 4000 dollar motorcycle with liability only insurance. And you better believe theres no way my camaro is getting liability only coverage!

so i called to find out what happened, to find out that they cancelled me because i had not sent in pictures to their underwriting department to prove my cars agreed upon value. I told them that i had not recieved any such letter. They checked there system and immediately said our bad, we forgot to send it. DUH!!!!!!!!!!!

needless to say, ive sent in some pics and hopefully theyll give me my agreed upon value of 35000.00. annoying start of the day, i must say

So lately insurance has been a nightmare. HTey forgot to send me a packet of info stating that they require pics of the car and a professional appraisal to keep my car covered at 35K. So they cancelled me.I called adn complained and was told i had til today to get it all done.

I was told this last thursday afternoon. The day before good friday and easter. It was ridiculous. I asked for an extension and was immediately shut down.

The first appraisal shop i took my car to valued it at 10K. Needless to say i was NOT happy. They said that my car was too far from stock and that decreased its salability. I told them i wasnt planning on ever selling it. I just needed it covered for the amount it would cost me to rebuild it. They said they wouldnt write it for anything more than 10K. ...because you know my fuel injection and t56 6 speed are such bad selling points.

Luckily a friend set me up with a local appraisal place that dealt with modified cars. They came down and wrapped up everything within 2 hours. I emailed the info t my insurance and now everything is taken car of. thank god that nightmare is over. To many threats of cancelation. I would have just moved to a new company but its next to impossible to get a clasic car policy on a muscle car for a 23 year old kid. Insane.

But atleast now my car is officially valued at $37,300.00
and that i can live with

Hagerty is what I got my car insured with. They are very nice to deal with. As long the car isn't your daily driver and you have other auto insurance they are great way to insure our collectible cars. No need for an appraisal, but you will need a digital camera so that you can send them lots of pics for documentation purposes. You set the agreed value as well (which sets your policy costs), as long as it is reasonable for the car I don't think you would have a problem buying the coverage you desired. I dont think they have an age requirement per say, but require 5 years driving experience and no major infraction (DUI etc).

hagardy was, along with every other major classic car insurance, the first place i applied. But many wont take any one under 25, and the places that would would only match the coverage of my daily driver. My daily driver is an 06 suzuki sv650S, a motorcycle. I only have liability only on it, at $300 per year. Full coverage is $2000.

Needless to say i wont have the camaro have anything less than full coverage, and i cant afford another $1700 a year to raise my motorcycle insurance. But safeco offers both classic car policies and regular policies, so they blended that together to write me my own policy. It was a bit more than your average classic car policy, but less than half to have the car insured by a regular, non classic, insurance carrier.

well the insurance junk is all taken care of. I have ful coverage and the inspection valued my car at $37,300.00 dollars, so im rockin steady.

Recently my no good piece of crap OttoR racing seats metal tube frame snapped so new seats have been purchased. The new seats are sooooo much better in every way. The old ones made it difficult for me to sit comfortably, but these new ones are soooo much wider adn more comfortable. Even my 300 lb 6foot 3 inch dad can fit in them comfortably. True touring seats.

the good news is that the cat has taken a liking to the old seat.

Im installing a new cold air intake system. It uses the smooth 1LE intake elbow and the the Mass airflow sensor. There is a foot long 3.5" tubing that allows the air filter to be right under the driverside fender where the air flow is uniterupted. The tubing is getting welded so this pic does not include it.

My cousin andrew rocks as he has a mid 90s LT1 police impala and bought the Corvette fuel rail covers to spruce up the engine bay. He got tired of trying to install them so he gave them too me :1st:.
They are very sexy but unfortunatly they took quite a but of modification to allow them to fit with the different style fuel system, wiring and other little things. But they fit well now and make the engine look much cleaner than before. They also go well with the new intake system.

You are going to love the 4.11s! Back when I got the 68 8 years ago, I went from 3.08 open diff to 3.73 w/ posi and went from a 15.3 to a 14.6 1/4 mile with no other changes. Pulled sooo much harder. Trapped +4mph as well. Get the posi when you do the gear swap, it's worth it.

The car is looking awesome! Glad you got insurance worked out. I thought my project was going to be done when I was 23...now I'm 25 and it's still not done, but at least I don't have to worry about getting collectors car insurance!

25! you *******! im jealous, that was my biggest hurdle! since im under 25 i had to get a mixed classic/standard insurance that cost 700 a year, as opposed to normal classic which is closer to 300 or so.... 2 more years.

ok. So i havnt posted on here in quite a few months and man have most have them been a doosy. ill break the stories up on multiple posts to keep it easy to read.

First off, at the end of summer on one extremly hot day the camaro proceeded to overheat horribly and blew a head gasket and cracked a head. good times.
This happened becasue of the faulty wiring done to my car. The power lead for the fans ahad been attached by the guy who wired my LT1 to a dead, non connected, power line. meaning the fans never came on. This also took with it my radiator and water pump.

I was able to find a friend of a freind who hooked me up witha good deal on getting my heads pressure tested adn fixed for a hundred and twenty bucks. I replaced and rebuilt the top half myself to save money so now ive still only built one engine, just twice.... well the top half anyways...

she runs just fien now other than a few smaller issues...

the next big problem was the overheating. she couldnt go 5 minutes after the rebuild without overheating and i couldnt figure the problem out for the better part of two weeks. Turns out when i pulled the old water pump the linking piece that looks like a socket that connects the two drives together was still attached. when i got the new waterpump it didnt have that piece and i didnt notice. So the water pump never functioned.
that tiny ass socket ran me 54 dollars. ugh. but my cooling system run flawless.

ive also built a real CAI system with i will post some pics of soon!

Good job on getting everything worked out for the most part. Sucks about the insurance issues, I'm pretty much going to be screwed i guess since im only 20 now and my car should be driveable within the next couple months.

insurance issues were all settled out. im paying 370 every 6 months for full coverage with an agreed upon value for my car set at 35K. I had the car appraised at 37.3K. IM into it for about 34K so far so im pretty much breaking even. Not that it really matters as im not planning to ever sell this car.

ok so in the week ive had off of school (thank you winter break) ive finished installing my dyno matting!
ok, so its actually peel and seal from Lowes but its the same difference... at about a quarter the cost. It took about four days to remove the interior and install the matting to cover everything. Ran me about a 140 bucks total.
Since then the car has ran sooooooo much smoother. Less rattles, the vibrations below 50MPH are all but gone, it feels as if ive installed a brand new suspension system.

A nice side bonus has reveled itself in the fact that the stereo now sounds about 50 times better. the cancelling of the outside sound plus the reverberating effects of the aluminum lining of the peel and seal cause the stereo to sound amazing. The notes are much more crisp and everything hits harder. i love it.

Another amazing side benifit of this is MORE POWER!!!! how does this happen you ask...? magic! ok, so maybe not.
When i was installing the peel and seal around the fire wall i noticed when moving my gas pedal out of the way that the far back of the pedal would hit on the firewall when pressed down. A quick check showed that even when pushed down all the way and bottoming out the pedal the venturis were only open roughly 80% - 85% of the way!!!! a quick restructuring and the pedal now goes all the way down and the throttle body opens all the way. FREE POWER is the best power!

One small problem with this was that the first time i fully floured it on the freeway in 4th at about 90mph after the throttle/pedal incident was fixed i blew out one of the bearings on my driveshafts rear knuckle. this has since been replaced and ive had no problems! of course that was only yesterday so only time will tell.

Oh and yes, pics of the whole install will be posted after the holidays

ok, its been a while.
LEts see. Ive gotten my electronic speedometer and tachometer installed and those are working quite nicely.

My clutch recently went out so i dropped the tranny out and proceeded to install a install a new clutch kit from RAM which is supposed to be good for up to 500 horses. Im only making maybe 400 so this should work.

so i got both good news and bad news the other day.
I had taken my 2009 federal return money to pick up a eaton posi and get it installed at unitrax in anaheim. I also had a set of 4.11s i picked up last year from summit. These parts were both picked up for my 8.2 inch 10 bolt in my car.

So i drop the car and parts off at the shop and get a call the next day telling me they cant install my parts. THey tell me that at some point and time someone swaped my 3rd member from an 8.2 to an 8.5. this is good because 8.5s are much stronger than 8.2s, but now ive gott he car torn apart at this shop and all my parts dont fit.

Luckily o was able to ship back the parts and the new 8.5 inch parts are on there way. im just out shipping cost. Unitrax was super cool about teh whole thing and told me not to sweat it. nice guys. also summit was awesome because they took back a part and swapped it for the right one even though i had had the part for nearly a year already.

ill let you know how the whole thing turns out in the end.
