I guess I'll start on a project thread for our 68 GTO

Car was purchased in 1999 by my mother who had owned one brand new when she was 18. Well she saw by chance on the history channel Top 10 Muscle cars of all tiem and GTO was number 1 so she decided to buy another one

currently the car has a Pontiac 400 out of, we think, a 70's Bonnieville

the motor is tired and could use a good rebuild here sometime but is still fine for driving currently

4 Speed Manual (I think a muncie my brother specwarsquid will fill in the details)

New hurst shifter

3.55 auburn posi (interesting note the car orginally had a 355 gear set from the factory according to the papers we got form the pontiac historical services but somewhere down the line someone put a economy 2.78 in it)

Axle housing is out of a chevelle since the housing we had was a canadian housing and wouldnt support the 3.55

Car is in need of body work, new paint, and some chroming, also this particular car was Verdoro Green

I already have a new hood for it which was put on for fittign but now is back off and in its box

I guess I'll start off with some before before pics

here you see the car a little after we bought it in 99 at the woodward Tigers GTO show

Car was sitting on Rally IIs on Bias PLy Tires

Just to add some information:

The trans is a Muncie M21

The 400 is a 1972 YT motor with 46 heads.

regarding the wierd looking decal and 4 on the bottom of the rad core support. It looks to me like some previous owner used what ever scrap metal he could find to repair the damages core support.

The front end of the car suffered some sort of front end damage that extended all the way to the frame. The previous owner did his best to fix it himself. But didn't do a very good job as all the front driverside body panels slump down. Bascially they couldn't fix the frame properly so they coaxed all the sheetmetal to fitt the bent frame. didn't really noticed it too much until we tried some replacement body panels and they would fit. At it's worst the driverside sheetmetal slopes down 1 1/2 inches more than it should.

The plan this winter is to explode the front end and pull the frame out from under the car to true it up then blast, coat and rebuild the frame.

At that point will tweak the Hotchkis suspension and get the car lowered in weeds properly.

here are some pics i have:

Nice looking '68. My favorite year for the GTO. I have a red '68 GTO also. It's an original solar red car with parchment interior and 400/4-speed. It's not very original anymore.

decided to come back and update this a little though it is with older pics still but oh well

this set of pics is from when we took the GTO into the shop to have a new rear end put it

ended up having to get a donor axle from a chevelle since the new 3.55 auburn posi wouldn't fit into the old axle

well since it had warmed up a bit I drove the car to one body shop I called them up earlier today and asked if they did frames, but should of been more specific about older car frames after I got there they said they wouldn't touch it since they don't have the specs, but they did recommend another good shop. I called them up and made sure to ask about older frames and they said yes since they have a 55 Belair there

here are pics of the main damage

well went to another shop and they quoted about 5 hours on the frame repairs and straightening

Quoted me a ball park of around $500 for the frame rack ($150), 5 hours work, and tailoring to and from the shop ($80 each way) if I pull all the front end sheet metal off

course will probably be more like $600 but I think I can live with that

I think he said without towing would probably be around $350-400

the front is about the same height as before and the rear was sitting lower than the front so we added the perches back in but cut them down

Also drivetrain will come out this weekend so I can take the motor to a shop to get rebuilt

so has anyone noticed that in the one pic I posted it looks liek someone tried to grind something off the block ;)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/IMG_4244-1.jpg

you can still see the Y N but according to my brother looks like all they did was grind off the part number instead of the VIN

andrewb70

On a Pontiac engine, that is where the engine code and the last 6 digits of the VIN go. The block PN is in the rear.

Sorry Andrew, I guess you'll just have to stick to your Big Block Chevys and LSX motors :geek: (just kiddin).

From:
http://www.pontiacpower.net/castnum01.html

Pontiac engines have block code. This code will tell you the year it was to be used. However, these codes were used over from year to year. Together with the casting code and cating date you can determine where what the engine is. Starting in 1965 Pontiac began using a 2 digit letter code. Above the 2 digit code will be the motor unit number, which is either 6 or 7 digits. It is important to note that it is not related to the VIN number. As a general rule, "W" coded blocks are manual transmission and "Y" coded blocks are automatics. And most of the "Z" coded blocks are also auto. The "X" coded blocks are a little of both.

The Engine codes will be found on the front of passengers side of the block, below the head. Above the 2 digit code will be the motor unit number, which is either 6 or 7 digits. It is not related to the VIN number.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/blockcode03-1.jpg

The VIN on Pontiac engines is located vertically just to the left of the passenger side of the Timing cover.

The block VIN (http://www.pontiacpower.net/pictures/blockvin03.jpg)and the vehicle VIN were the same, but by late 1967 the block VIN was revised. It started out with a 2 (for Pontiac), the last digit of the year and a letter for the assembly plant followed by the last 6 digits of the vehicle VIN. It was located on the front of the block, on the passengers side, at the bottom near the timing cover.

Common assembly letters are: A = Alanta, B = Baltimore, C (or S) = Califorina/Southgate, E = Linden, NJ, G = Framingham, MA, K = Kansas City, MO, L = Van Nuys, R = Arlington, TX, x = Kansas City, KN, 1 = Oshawa, Ont. Z = Fremont, CA.
*Note* This number sometimes is stamped very lightly and may be hard to read as seen in this (http://www.pontiacpower.net/pictures/blockvin04.jpg)picture. It is also interesting that this block has the VIN stamped twice on it.

(picture is sideways)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/blockvin03-1.jpg

My theory is that someone ground off the 6 digit unit number thinking it was the VIN ala the Small Block Chevys. Codered has a picture of the faint but intact VIN located next to the timing cover.

well some slight bad news

I got a call saturday morning from a buddy who visits the shop frequently and they found a crack on one of the heads after cleaning them up. Crack is on the exterior but the thermostat hole I havent seen it yet but my brother and dad went to check it out. might be fixable but might be looking for another set of heads.

If I buy heads i'm not going real pricey i wouldn't mind finding just a nice decent set to get me buy for a couple years till I decide to go for some nicer heads $1,500-$2,000 is not in my budget for heads

What compression are you running?

Great progress on the firewall! That will set off the engine compartment with it all smooth. Are you going to paint it the same color as the body?

Heads look sweet CodeRed. I think you will find the Performer RPM a better manifold. You want to be able to rev that Poncho closer to 5800-6000. The RPM will work way better than the P4B in that range.
The P4B is pretty much a lower-end (poorer cousin) to the Perfomer. Once you see the new one, you will be glad you went that route. I am going to either run my other (race) engine with the Performer RPM (altogether) on my '72, or replace the current P4B on the cars original motor with a new Performer RPM.

With those E heads do you need to use RAIV headers?
:dunno:
I thought that is what was required. The thing that puzzles me is the flat bottom of the port and how does that transition to the round header. That is the first shot I have seen of the E head exhaust ports.

gearbanger

You do have to use RAIV (round port) headers with the e-heads. The flat bottom on the ports is like that because it makes the exhaust port flow better. It also creates a sort vortex area just outside the exhaust port that help prevent reversion of exhaust gases that can pollute the intake charge. An old trick for ford 302 boss and 351 C engines was to install port plates in between the heads and headers to create this "D" shape. They say it helped alot on those engines too.

On that water pump, you should put the plate against the pump and check the clearance between the impellar and the plate at the center hole. The clearance should be minimized in order to keep the efficiency of the impellar. Alot of times it is 1/8" or more with aftermarket parts and that can be the root of hot running problems with pontiacs. I just wanted to let you know while you have it apart to check it. You may have already known this.

I have never had any luck with the edelbrock carbs is why I ask.

The edlebrock carb he's using is a loaner from a previous project that never came about. It was used to replace the engine's tired Quadrajet and provided years of faithful, dead-nuts reliable service in the engine's previous form. I believe he has plans to replace it in time.

Regarding the air cleaner Chris:

Here's an idea. Get an Air Clearner like this from Billet Specialties and I'll take it to work and media blast it to match your valve covers. Even better you could get an extra GTO decal to use as a reverse stencil. When done peal it off and you have a cast-look aluminum lid with the polish GTO logo.

its a semi gloss I'm not real happy with it but it will do for now and looks better than it did when I pulled the engine

Eventaully the engine will come back out and the body off the frame and then at that point I'll coat the frame with POR 15 and paint the engine bay satin black

got my jegs starter that weve had for years finally mounted and lined up right.

did a test fit of the engine first without the trans to check for clearance of the starter so I didn't have to put it on from under the car.

tried to put the engine and trans in the car and then remembered the headers lol well ran into a bit of a snag but will probably wait till next weekend to finish up getting everything lined up and headers put in.

My prop valve was floating above the frame to clear my headers when I got the car. I fabbed up a bracket to mount it to the frame behind the inner fender, using two existing holes.

I think if I have to do it again I will put it under the toe-board.

Yup, had the same problem. If you 'leave it as is' movement of the motor will cause the header to rub against the valve and you will work a hole into the side of your headers. Not to mention the heat sink it creates for your valve being so close (the stock exhaust I believe tucks in a bit tighter to the trans).

I had to move my p-valve to another location (I swapped out a Bird front-disc/rear-drum p-valve and mounted it under my Master-Cyl).

Cheers,
