Well, thats it, I hate you! Top 3 on my list of things to do is fly the muscle car of airplanes some day. I am so jealous I cannot stand it!

Congratulations on doing something most of us could never do.

Will ALWAYS be the first thing to come to mind when a P-51 is mentioned.

Oh thats too cool! I'd love to ride in a P-51.

I saw some kind of old looking bomber flying over the golf course I was playing at friday. It flew kinda low so I got a nice view, the sound that came out of that thing was soo awsome. Wish I knew what it was but I'm not that good with planes.

Now there's an opportunity that comes along everyday...LOL
Way cool!!! how'd you come upon that chance? :hail:
Mustang's and Corsair's are my 'faves of that era in piston driven, but I still think the sexiest airplane around is an F86 Saber jet.

What sucks is i know 2 guys with P-51's here in OKC, but I don't know them well enough to get a free ride. The cost to pull one out of the hanger and make one trip around the patch will make you cringe.

They have a couple dates here a year at the local museum at the airport where you can schedule a flight during different shows. I will let you know when the next one is.

The P51 has to be the most beloved airplane of all time. I love em. Some of the best design lines in aviation history.

I would love to fly in one.

The next best thing is watching them race at the Reno Air Races where they go by you at ~500mph less than 100 feet off the ground.

If P-51's are the muscle cars of air planes then the unlimted gold class at reno are the hot roded/race versions. They lighten them, clip the wings, reshape the canopies for better aerodynamics and put HUGE engines in some of them (especially the radial fighters like sea fury's and bearcats). Most of these are pushing twice as much power as they had in WWII.

Guys, I added a photo link to my first post.
Mary took some nice photos: http://www.zenfolio.com/marypozzi/p147412364/

There are a couple of P-51's based in Hollister CA, I was told you could get rides now and then from them.

It was the wildest feeling when he turned sharply while flying in formation with the other P-51! I felt like we'd "slide" down into the other plane since we were above him in the turn but we just hung there right in place! :) I didn't bring a camera on the flight, probably should have, but I didn't want any distractions.

I swore if I ever got a chance to ride in one I would, - and I did! :) I rode in a B-17 two times a couple of years ago, that was neat too.
David

BTW, 3 pilots died at the Reno air races a few weeks ago...

Yeah I was at the raced for the weekend. My bro and dad were there and saw the two crashes that occurred during the races. The third was not a fatality due to racing. It was a racer that died during normal general aviation operations at the airport.

My work has a museum in oregon with one but the rides are a couple of hundred dollars even for empl. but i got to ride in a b-17 bomber and the ford tri-motor (i was scared to death in the ford even before we had mechanical problems in the air!) But the b-17 was a great experience. But i really would like to fly in a 51.
Everytime they offered a helicopter ride it was a test flight......NO THANKS....dont want to experience an auto rotate

Very cool, I have a P-51 powered model airplane that is partially finished, does that count! I would love to fly in the real thing someday, thanks for sharing.

that is awesome i've always wanted to ride in a small fast plane. The P-51 would be perfect.

That is great. Old planes are fascinating to me, especially the P-51. They are pretty loud from the ground, how is it from inside?

Found a great site that lists worldwide Warbird Fly opportunities.

http://www.warbirdalley.com/fly.htm

IIRC there's a place in Kankakee IL , small airport that lets you
dogfight old warplanes like the P-51. Can't remember the name tho. :pat:

It's actually all over the country. now that you reminded me, I did look into this years ago but couldn't afford it at the time ($1100 for 2 1/2 hours). The planes are not p-51's or anything like that and you don't even need a pilots license.

Thanks bro, I think that's the one.

I know I'd pay for it, but finding a friend that's willing to part with $1100
is hard to do these days.

Confederate Air Force and another flying musuem does rides in WWII bombers. They tour the country and are a lot of fun. I had a choice a few years ago between a ride in a B-17 and B-24; went with the B-24 as I believe it was one of the only ones still flying. Great experience to be in a piece of history like that. I think the flights now are around $400 per half-hour. They are not exactly fuel mizers!
The P-51 would be a whole different experience though, fast and wild :naughty:

The only cool airplane rides I have had were from my wifes Grandfather's glider. I flew with him several times before he passed away. It was almost surreal. The lack of noise is the wildest part besides having no engine. We once stayed up for about three hours. But that ride in the P-51 must have been awesome.Always wanted to ide in a warbird.

A couple of years ago I got a ride in an AT-6 Trainer. It was a blast. Wish I had a stronger stomach so we could have done more aerobatics.

P-51's are sexy. They're every pilots dream ride.

P-51's are my dream plane. As an Army brat, all I did was build airplane models, until I found car models. :6gears:

Tell me where to be and I'll bring the barf bag!

David, I agree with Frank. I hate you!

Given the others in service during the same era there is hardly a plane that can compare to the P51. Long legs, manuerverability, and firepower all combined with the pinacle of piston engine designs equals a winner. Looking like pure sex doesn't hurt either.
