alright, on the way up snowboarding last night, me and a friend got into a discussion about horsepower and if they rate it from the flywheel or the rear wheels. heres the question, when GM states the new LS2 in the vette is 400hp, is that to the rear wheels or the flywheel? also, like the LS1 camaro and firebird in 98 to 02, they state 325 horse, is that to the rear whees or flywheel?? prolly a dumb question but I wasnt sure.
thanks, colt

It is all at the flywheel , i dont remember the exact numbers but i think the 400hp LS2 put down something around 360-370 to the rear, probably a little less (i cant remember)

I could be wrong but, I know in the 60's and 70's the ratings were "gross horsepower" meaning at the flywheel. Now I think the switch has been made to "net" or at the rear wheels. Again I could be completely wrong.

thanks!
All numbers are SAE at the flywheel.

Here is a thread about a 400hp LS2 dyno , it put down 343 to the rear wheels (it was brand new and not broken in yet) but that does answer your question. HP is measured at the flywheel from the factory :)

The old "gross" numbers were also at the flywheel, but without accessories and (I think) full exhaust and thus produced higher though misleading numbers...think the way the magazines do it currently :)
Another thing, the ls1 vette and fbody had the same motor, though the vette was rated higher. As well GM has a tendency to under-rate their motors.
