17's looks to be the best size for your platform IMHO. Not quite sure what bolt pattern your gonna end up in the end, or what wheel style you want to go with (3 piece, flush, mono block) but The 5zigen FNO1RC's come in 17x7, 17x8, 17x9, and 17x10 with he 5x114.3. I hated these wheels when I first saw them, but with 17x8" front & 17x10" rears with a 12 or 25 offset, These things look mean (and pretty light). A mesh design would look sick as well. just another .02 to add to the jar.

A very interesting build. The rear diffuser, coupled with the exhaust note & BOV are gonna be the root of many puzzled expressions. Can't wait to seem more!!!!

I do have to say this looks like a killer project! I saw a pic in a Readers' Rides section of (I believe) Car Craft... it was an '80s Chevette with 17s... ever since then I knew these econoboxes could look cool :D

Up until reading where you're actually from, I figured it would be MI seeing the pics of Schram (ordered a fuel pump from there last week). I live up near Flint.

On the wheels, I'm with sticking with the C6 wheels, I think they look awesome on the car :D The satin/matte/(whatever that finish is) looks perfect with the rest of the car.

For the engine harness, have you checked out Howell EFI ([/URL][url]www.howellefi.com (http://www.howellefi.com%29?))? Bill Howell actually used to work for GM on the EFI systems to my understanding. They do LS harnesses, and may be able to do one for the Ecotec.

For the engine harness, have you checked out Howell EFI (www.howellefi.com (http://www.howellefi.com))? Bill Howell actually used to work for GM on the EFI systems to my understanding. They do LS harnesses, and may be able to do one for the Ecotec.

I wouldn't buy another harness from Howell if it were 1$ and came with a team of techs to help me install it.

We purchased a harness and ECM to run the 1996 LT-4 we installed in my dad's '56 BelAir. When we fired it up, it ran great, but would then, seemingly at random, start running so rich that it would pour black smoke from the tailpipes, then it would clear up just as suddenly.It never set a code. I called Howell and was simply told, it can't do that. Um, yeah, but it is. We went back and forth on this over the course of several weeks, with me supplying all sorts of datastream information, readings taken from different sensors, etc. After he had me replace the O2 sensors (not exactly cheap) he finally agreed that the ECM must be bad. He then wanted me to send back the old ECM for testing, stating that this could take several weeks! Only after I protested due to the fact that we were due to head out to a show in Ohio (we life in MD) did he agree to allow me to pay for a new ECM, with him giving me a refund after receiving the old one.

To make matters worse, the new ECM is programmed to idle way to high! I gave up, and to this day, the car idles high. This fall I hope to send the ECM in to someone else to have it reprogrammed, though I am not entirely sure as to whom I should have do this.

Now, understand that this was a good 9 or 10 years ago (and I may not have the entire sequence of events exactly as they happened), but the customer service, and their attitude concerning the after sale support was so poor that I will never buy anything from them again.

i've ben planing this very swap in my 76 vega eversince the solstice came out.

keep us posted on this amazing restomod. when you do figure out your wiring issue I am just dieing to know what is needed to get this beast runing in an older car.

also as far as the rear end goes,, dont know what ur doing but. the chevy vega cosworth had a 7.5" 3.73 or 4.11 rear,,with posi avalible can be found on ebay ralativly cheeply, would be about the same widthand an easy install,,, not sure if it would last though , or id suggest looking in to an s10 rearend very popular among the vega crowd, 3.73 posi w/ disc brake should hold up to 300hp bt not to much more...

A built 7.5" will take everything a stock Solstice motor can put to it. I've run the bone stock (original axles, etc.) 7.5 in my '81 Malibu with 375+hp the past 2 summers, and it hasn't broken yet ;)

thanks doober, great to know... theres a guy on ebay (s10 warehouse) out of florida has several rears, 7.5 and a few 8.5" for around $500 with disk brakes. definatly gonna get one now that I know it will take the abuse of this ecotec, (assunming wiring can be done relativly cheeply) the way i drive ill probaly opt for the 8.5 and be set for when i can afford a cosworth crate engine

OK, first post after being a member for almost 2 years..

I subscribed to this thread a few years ago, and it was around page#2 of posts in this thread that I realized the likelyhood of this ever seeing the light of day was slim-none. I'm sorry I am likely right about this.

This might actually be a good poster-child sticky for those looking at starting a project.

1) Develop a plan
1b) determine what your capabilities are, and figure out what will need to be farmed out.
2) Set a budget.
3) Compare plan-budget. REalize that you will likely underestimate the cost of your plans by 20% (at LEAST) under reality.
4) Iterate on plans vs budget in 1 of two ways. a) budget to to the whole project, or b) what are reasonable chunks of the project to break it up over a longer period of time, but with the ability to run the car and stay inspired.

Buying the powertrain, then buying a tube frame kit without evaluating the stock chassis, or what's involved in suspension design/fab install for a one-off tube frame, then blow $$ on carb fiber wrapping headlight bezels while the motor sits in the corner... sad signs of a project never to see the light of day. Having $7-8k of parts piled up, a pile where more $$ will be needed to complete any 1 phase of the project is a bad idea.

After screwing around with a project for 9 years (!!!) and realizing that what I wanted for a car now is different than what I wanted 9 years ago was a tough enough pill to swallow. But I got the car done... then sold it :)..

I think this is fallout from people watch the Power Block on Spike, or Overhaulin.. or blah blah blah show where they built a car in a 1/2 show...

Agreed. Because he hasn't finished it doesn't mean he's given up. Life happens, and not everyone has a budget to do their car as fast as some others on here. It's all matter of time & money, and I'm not going to be a naysayer just because it takes longer than others. Being a hobby means the car could sit for 5 years before anything happens, it did for me, and it will likely be years before my car reaches some semblance of what I want it to be.

Well as I'm sure most of you have guessed, Project Ecovette has been discontinued...by me anyway.

I ran out of money and plan to move out of state so I need to sell it.

This really sucks as you guys have been absolutely amazing with all your positive feedback, and encouragement!! Thank you all! Great community here!
With the economy and other factors that life has thrown my way, I feel its best to let someone else have a go at it and will hopefully be able to finish what I started or better yet, improve on it!

I have a TON of time and more money in it than I care to admit.

1978 Chevette 2 door body with all original glass and mounted to 2x3 frame jig (Title Included)
Body is in amazing condition for it age with minimal rust and a dent on the passenger side quarter panel.
Jegs Jegster frame kit- modified with roll cage specifically for this body. Also a decent amount of box and tube steel for misc additions
2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP engine/ trans/ wiring harness with electronic gas pedal
Basically brand new drivetrain.
Drivetrain has ONLY 12 MILES on it...THATS RIGHT 12 MILES!! Pulled from a new car who's rubber seals were bad resulting in interior flooding and insurance claim.
Also comes with a Sparco front mount intercooler and pipes that is already set up for the mounting on the custom bumper brackets.
Drivetrain was purchased from Shrams Auto Parts in Mason Michigan. They deal with only late model GM vehicals.
New Clear headlights with new adjusters.
All misc. nuts and bolts and anything else I forgot to mention.
C6 Corvette 5-star rims. VERY LOW MILES (less than 500 miles) and in almost new condition.

It pains me greatfully to have to sell this, but given my current finanial situation, it would sit for many years before I could realistically move forward with it.

I'm willing to take my time selling it as I'm not looking to "Give it away" but I will offer everything for a reasonable price.

I just picked up a 72 GT out of Arizona that should be pretty much rust free. I also have a line on a solid 76 (but I would back date it so it looked like a Gen1 if I went that route). I'm really excited about this one - I had a bunch of Vegas when I was a kid and I had some friends with V8 Vegas. Maybe once the Chili Pepper goes out for paint I'll have a chance to test fit the Ecotoc and see what it's going to take.

it will be cool, and a great example of how a modern RWD compact could be built. the V8 vega that Schwartz built was nice of course, but different powerplants have a certain appeal as well.
I find it amazing that any vegas are left, those things were rusting when they were new!

The Schwartz LS V8 Vega is very cool - I saw it run at LS Fest. It was a pretty simple build and yet it was very fast on the autocross course. I thought about doing an LS motor in one but I'm just digging the thought of the Ecotec (it kind of looks like a Cosworth which I just think will look right in a Vega engine compartment). The Ecotoc should be much lighter than an LS with better balance but I guess we'll see. My preliminary guesstimates on weight and horsepower put it better than a C6 Corvette but not quite in Z06 territory from a power-to-weight ratio standpoint.

I'm pretty sure Vegas started rusting BEFORE they were actually assembled. It also seems like most of the ones that did survive were turned into drag cars. I think it would be fun to tear up an autocross or roadcourse in one.

Keith - I'll have to look that up. When I was a kid they had such a bad reputation that you could buy a good one for next to nothing. People seemed to hate the fact that they burned a lot of oil. I rebuilt a number of them and had the blocks steel sleeved and they ran great. And for the day (and for a kid with no money) they were pretty quick. All of mine had 4 speed sticks and they would chirp the tires in second and third.

I'm really excited about this one - I had a bunch of Vegas when I was a kid and I had some friends with V8 Vegas. Maybe once the Chili Pepper goes out for paint I'll have a chance to test fit the Ecotoc and see what it's going to take.

Thanks Craig, I think it will be fun little car. I wish I could get started on it sooner but I am trying to stay focused on my current project...and see it thru to completion. I live in the Bowling Green area. I've gone to the Goodguys Columbus event before - it's a great one. I may go this year too. Tom

14 hours of driving today - Kentucky to Michigan and back. A long day but worth it. The ecotec made it safely to its new home. We're sorry project Ecovette has been discontinued but excited about the possibilities of project EcoVega (hopefully we can think of a better name than EcoVega). We have to finish the Chili Pepper first but the wheels are already turning on the Vega. Thanks for everything Tim and good luck with your move and best wishes otherwise.

Tom, it was a complete pleasure meeting you and your son! Glad the drive went well and I too look forward to seeing how your Vega comes together! I was really happy that I found all the extra parts I had for the Ecotec so I could include them for you.
