ehh... i love period styled/correct cars as well as cars that have all the right stuff but are a little rough around the edges but to me the term "rat rod" means hunk of crap.
some of these cars are just plain cartoonish, a 31 sedan shouldn't have rockers dragging on the ground or 4 inch tall windows, or spider webs all over. i could go on forever with this. For the most part There is a real lack of class and style in the build genre
what really bugs me is all the bone stock 305's and 350s in these cars with open headers.
a nice hot rod is one thing but this is a waist of a nice body... http://www.harleyshootout.com/Copy%20of%20harleyshootoutwebsite/VooDoo%20Larrys%2028%20Dodge%20VOODOO%20DIABLO.jpg
then again I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to pre 67 customs

i agree with that 100 percent
the whole novelty aspect of the "rat rod" trend is wayy worse then pro-street.

Patina on an old hot rod is one thing, rat rodding an old hot rod to me is just unsafe and terrible looking in my opinion. Some are nice and look safe and others just down right look like they don't belong on the road at all.

Not my flavor...but hey, to each his own. That's what makes rodding interesting. :smoke:

The term "rat" kinda sucks to say the least. The "trend" of it has killed the whole idea. Just like "pro street" came from real drag cars, but turned to a trend and people went over and above to beat the trend. Now people build "rat rods" and just try to make it look (and everything else), well justa plain POS! Junkier does not mean better! Now, Traditional rods are pretty killer IMO. Pretty much the purest form of "hot rodding", it is where it all began. Like this car, you could have seen it in the late 50's and it still looks bitchinl!

They are popular because hot rodding became a rich mans game, they are a response to all the high dollar shop cars.
Its cool to see a guy and his buddies build a car in his garage. It seems like thet are meant to be cool and fun, not the "best" of anything.

I totally agree with you. Barrett Jackson and the high brow society
is turning a back yard hobby into an uppity trailer queen hobby. :bsjerk:
I build a car to drive it, not sit and polish it.
I dig these alot personally. I have a few pics from the last show in
Chicago, have to find them. You need a tetnis shot lookin at em, but
that is what makes em so cool IMO. Reminds me of something Rob Zombie
would build and drive.

I have to say this first: To each his own.
But to me, this is just the most ridiculous thing out there. That is next to the ricer cars with the top fuel dragster sized wings on the back.

While that may be true, i know of many people who build there cars in their own garage and they can atleast come up with something better then a rusty ass body and a rediculous hammer as a shifter. I'm all about originality but com'n you have to draw a line somewhere.
The worst thing is most of the "rat rods" could actually be really nice if they finsished them off.

I totally agree, bu the problem comes when people spend big bucks to intentioanlly make the car look "ratty"

i definately agree. I happen to like the "Rat Rods". To me its just the average guy building what he likes, unlike those who "Buy" their rides, and don't turn a wrench. yeah, boyd and foose and those guys build some killer rides, but nothing i could ever afford. I guess thats why i tend to like the old school rods. it just shows what someone with more imagination than money can do. alot of these "Rat Rods" that some people don't seem to like, have a lot of work done to them, ie welding, suspension, chop tops...that takes actual talent, not just being able to sign your name on a check and buy what you want.
i also think it sucks when a person takes a nicely done car and turns it into a rat rod.

A lot of them are cool, but some of them are really just Kooky Kustoms that don't look right in any genre.

I did the interior in this car, and also did some chassis work.
Just took Top 50 at a show with 3000 cars. All Steel body.

I was standing next to an old timer at a show once looking at some "rat rods" when he told me that he grew up building hot rods in the early fifties and into the sixties in So. Cal. He explained that their cars never looked like that or were driven missing floors or had shotgun holes through the quarters. They may have been primmered but only because they were saving for that lacquer paint job. He was pretty turned off as was I seeing a steel 32 Vicky cut down into another Munstermobile. Thought that conversation was interesting. Not getting the "Rat" thing yet.
However- I do have a huge soft spot for period gassers!!!!!

Can't say i'm a fan of the "rat" term, which i'm starting to get alot with this car. I like the sleeper cars more. Right now I just don't want a car with shiny paint, I did my first flat black car back in the early 90's before it became the "in" thing to do....
I will have to say I think both sides of this debate are right. I like the idea of the rat rod thing. But some are just unsafe. The guys that drive them have another sub culture going on themselves. And the girls. Well I'm about 20 or so tattoos shy of fitting in with this crowd. But the pin up contest are something to watch.

I saw this there last year also and it was pretty sweet. Had a ford lightning engine in it and some huge billet wheels. Very unique but looked good. There are a few running around my town and they are so slammed and chopped that I bet the roof is probably at my chest and Im only 5'6!
