I would do 8" max, depending on the stance you are trying to achieve.

I have 9.5 in the front of my 69' that has almost 1 coil cut from the hotchkis 2" drop springs.

i think my 9.5's would have worked if I didnt have the tall spindles.

I have 18 / 8 with a 245/40 and ATS tall spindals and it rubs a little when i cut the wheel all the way.

What do the tall spindles do suspension wise?

You've been here this long and you don't know?
First slap yourself really hard. Then do a search on suspension threads wtih the phase "negative camber gain."

What backspacing are you guys running on those 9.5's?

And where is it rubbing?

Is the rubbing occuring on the control arms? Why does the tall spindle reduce the amount of rim?

I tried the 9.5's on the front of mine with ATS spindles. If I had less BS, it MIGHT have worked. I had interference at the UCA and steer arm.
I had my forgelines reworked to 8.5" and run a 245/40/18 and I have a rub that I haven't cared to look for yet. It doesn't seem to be that bad.

The problem with the tall spindle is it effectively "raises" the UCA making it closer to the wheel.

On the 9.5" I used 6.2" front BS.
On the 8.5" I used a 5.2" front BS.

Here's a link to my drama.
