My friend has a 92 Notchback and was wondering if he could fit 315's in the rear. He doesnt care if he needs adapters and doesnt care if the wheels stick out a little more then usuall.
thanks

I have 255-45-17's on a 8x17 Enkei wheel 15mm offset and it appears lost on mine!
In 5.0 Magazine, Late Model restoration advertise a 10.5x17 alloy in 4 bolt, so maybe a wheel that big could fit a Fox.
Summit do a tyre gauge/mock up device for about $90 that would help you find a wheel tyre maximum combo.

my buddy has 315's on his 88'. I'll call him for info.
cobra r' rims 10.5 rear and 9's on the front. 275 front and 315's rear. he said he have to redo the tail pipes and put the spring rubbers back in.They rubbed a bit with people in the back without them. Other than that it was cake.

Hey Jesse,
The only way to get 315's on there "safely and effectively" is to do a mini-tub. There may be a way to get them on there but the car was originally designed for a 15x7-225 wheel. Doing so will have a negative effect on the drivability of the car. You can get a 275 tire under the rear but even that is pushing it. I have owned 5 different fox bodies from mild to wild with every tire and wheel package you can think of. Without chassis/suspension modification I don't recommend going bigger than a 245/45/17 tire.

Can you elaborate what would be unsafe?

Well for starters, I had a friend cut a rear tire on the inside of the quarter when he hit a good sized bump in the road. Granted he was on the gas and had a passenger in the back seat but he was only running a 275 tire. They almost didn't walk away. During that time I was running a 275 rear tire on mine so I went down to a 245. When I did so I found out that the inside of the tire had been rubbing big time when the suspension was compressed. You could not tell at all when driving the car and it had clearence when just sitting on the ground. The car handled "way" better after I put on the 245's and the difference in traction was minimal. The car just seemed to like it better.
Also, I use the term safely because I'm pretty sure I've made some 140+mph highway runs with 275 tires rubbing and heating up to god knows what temp!!!
Like I said before, anything is possible, I personally think a 245/45/17 tire is the most effective tire for the foxy (unless you are strictly drag racing)

well I'd hope some of us would be smart enough to check for suspension travel clearance. thanks for the info

You are right "Mrquick", I mean Mr. Whatever!
I never thought of that! There was time when many things were done by trial and error. I was simply trying tell my experience with 20 years of fox bodies. Obviously you are much smarter than my buddy who currently has 2 of the fastest fox bodies in the country in his chassis shop.
So, go ahead Jesse! Mrquick says it's okay!! Hell, if you jack the back of the car up enough you can go for the 335's!!! Just don't take any passengers, hit any bumps, hard turns, and don't launch the car too hard. The car should be blast to drive!
Jesse, don't listen to me or Mrquick. There has to be a Mustang authority in your area. Ask them if you can "safely" put a 10.5" rim/315 tire on the back of a fox body. I'll give Mrquick a $100 if they say "sure, you just have to move the exhaust a little and put the spring bumpers in". I bet it will be more along the lines of "I wouldn't without fairly major modification".

What do you mean by spring bumpers?

Forgive me, I'm talking about those spacers you can get when increasing ride height. We always called them spring bumpers.

wow, thats pretty good but i'll go easy on you since your green. I mean with 20 years plus experience i'd imagine you'd be abit mature about my clear stating that a friend that has a certain size tire on his car. Never when into modification detail. I was mearly passing on some quick information and answering a members question. I didn't mean to challenge you manhood or something. I hope you feel better.
As far as putting 1 inch of hard on the table...you win. Congrates. :Alchy: Maybe pro-touring isn't ready for this guy. I hope you enjoy your time off, keyboard commando.
Now back to the question...can you put 315's on a car much less a fox body? Sure you can but you need to make changes. You need to make sure there is no part, chassis interference or adverse suspension geometry changes. Make the modifications required to install your wheels. Done deal.
What "Quak duh geee" is stateing you absolutly can't change a vehicles configuration since it was designed to run 14 inch rims and 195 tires. Does that mean pro-touring is a farse and we should all put out stock stuff back on? I guess Kwiki-mart is right....I wonder where my 14 x 6's are?

just to add, my buddy says KwakiPP should try a search on 315's on mustangs...its a pretty common install and works for others. Im surprised your 2 timer buddy didn't know this? your :1st: but i do take paypal.

Just had my Fox on a ramp, jacked under the 3dr member so it's at ride height.
With my 255-45-17's on it I can just get my finger between the front and the inner wing. Without cutting the lip I 'might' have 15mm of extra width available.
That's with a 15mm offset.
If I had a 9inch wheel, 15 to 18mm offset and a 275 tyre, I recon I would be on the limit without modification.
9x17's are easy to get through most of the mustang suppliers, I guess there is a good reason it's the most common!
If you minitubbed it, went for more offest, then I recon a 315 would be easy.

315s on a Fox won't tuck under, but if the person is OK with the tires being even with the fender lips, it's doable.
Tailpipes may have to be reformed as mentioned. Mini-tubs would help, but a torch and BFH to "massage" the inner wheelwell can do the trick. Quad shock removal, and no coilovers, springs in the original location. A panhard bar or other axle location device would be a good idea too, since the OEM Fox suspension allows for quite a lot of side to side movement in relation to the body, and that's where you'll end up with contact.
cheers

315's will not fit unless you hang them out, then it will look like crap.
KwikGT is right on the 275. i have run several lets of the 275 drag radials on my 87-93 gt and they have all rubbed. that is with rolled fender lips and sledge hammered inner fenders.
a 315 will fit the 94 and newer models with ease.

this one sticks out pretty far but with the right offset and modifications it can work. https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2007/10/attachment-1.php?attachmentid=14888

Dear Mr. Quick,
I'm sorry. I shouldn't have called you Mr. Clit, Mr. ***, or Mr. **** for that matter.
Let's just be clear about this. Jesse asked if you can get 315's on the back of a fox body. He said his friend didn't mind using spacers or different offsets etc. This makes me think that he is looking to just bolt on a set of tires without major mod's. That was the question. I gave him the correct answer. You then ask me to elaborate on what would be "unsafe". If you need me to tell you what can be unsafe about puttting on a wheel combo that is 3.5" (50%!!!!) wider than what it was designed for, you should hang up your torch. That's not to say that it couldn't be safe WITH the propper mod's.
Now you say that I'm not for customization??? My fox body has close to 50 grand in mod's. with no aspect of the car untouched. I am all for customizing and I hate to drive a "stock" looking or driving car.
So Mr. Quick, I will rephrase my original answer just for you!
Jesse, tell your friend he should tub the rear, flare the quarters, and get some real meat under there. He won't be sorry. If you just want to bolt on a set 10.5"/315's then it's "not safe or effective".
Let's make up Mr, Quick. You stick with your Rest-o-mods (which you seem to know well) and I'll stick with my fox bodies.

dood. no worries, I haven't got into a pissing match in so long I got carried away. I kinda like the name calling. I haven't been called that first name since I got married! LOL just kidding....
I never said I was a newer Mustang expert, I was just passing on what I have personally witnessed. Mark is the real fox body guy but he refuses to participate on the internet...afraid of alien probing i guess?
We do agree on one thing, it will require work to fit properly, and my making it sound easy was not my intentions. Just typed out that way.
Jesse, I hope your buddy does it....it LOOKS badass!!!!!

Yeah,
I passed up a deal on an original one about a year and a half ago. The guy was asking 45 grand and I thought he was nuts! I probably could have got it for 40.
How am I doin' now?:seizure:
