hey guys a while back i bought a set of kmc hot wheels for my nova and im running 17x9 in the back they do not rub or anything in normal driving but when the car is loaded down with a passenger the rear rubs just a little and i have plenty of space on the inside of the wheel wells anyway my question is on the mounting surface of the rim it is beveled about 1/4 to 5/16s can i get them machines flat to remove the bevel without damage to anything or is this a bad idea
thanks for any help

I'm not familiar with the wheels you mentioned, so without more info it's a bit tough to say. Most cast center, aftermarket wheels are available with several different offset dimensions for different applications...many of these come from the same castings and vary in the amount of machining done to the center hub section in order to achieve the desired offset.

Considering the potential consequences of breaking a wheel center while driving though, you want to be very certain before you start machining. Have you called the wheel manufacturer?

im having a bit of a time getting ahold of anyone at kmc but i will keep trying thats all i was worried about was taking to much off the mounting face and making it weak

I have heard of people taking an 1/8th or so..but 1/4" or more from a wheel nut mounting face which is probably just a little more than 5/8" (if you take into acount the depth of the tapered seat)

A safer bet is to send them to Weldcraft and have the outer lip moved in.

Like others have already said, make sure you don't remove too much so that you're wheel doesn't have adequate strength left. You wouldn't want to be out driving and bust the center out of the wheel. That wouldn't be a pretty day.

I've heard of guys doing this, and everyone says dont take off too much...but without some kind of FEA you wont know where that limit is. I'm sure there is LOTS of overkill bilt into things of this nature, but still kind of scary. I've been considering taking a bit off mine too, but most likely will just sell them and buy new ones correctly sized.

If you do it, also make sure you have the clearance available for the brakes if you have discs. Sometimes those calipers are real close to the inside of the wheel center section. If ya gots drums though, that wont be a problem.

all i want to do is get rid of the taper on the mounting surface just to tuck em in a hair more i will look into it some more to see if its doable tahnks a lot for the replies guys the last thing i want to do is mess with the intergrity of the wheel in anyway
