Has any tried to put that big of a tire on 17x9 rim?? Any pics or feed back would be helpful beacuse I think I might try it???!!
Will the tire just pucker out at the lip a little??
Is this just a bad idea.. if so why??

No, it will pucker a lot.

Yes, because tire manufactures recomend at least a 10.5" rim for a 315 tire. 11" - 12" would be better.
It will not handle to it's fullest potential, will probably wear uneven, and look goofy... and that's if they can even get it mounted.
Stick with 275's max on a 9" rim, IMO.

That would not be safe at all!
That size tire is not made for that small of a wheel.
Nick is right 275 max.

wouldn't do it. I did this on a 17x9.5 and tire shop had a lot of trouble putting tire on rim. After install on car tire just looked dumb on rim under car. I bought 17x11 and a much better look and safer.

So no 17x9 on big tires (got it)****dont try that at home***
How about an equal sized tire to a (315/35) but on a 16" rally rim ..Wheel vintuques makes a steel 16x10 which is the width I need
but now I cant find the tire size????????
Someone cut me a break here....is this on purpose???

I ran a 315 on a 17x9 for several years until I got my current setup, 315/30/18s on 18x9.5s. They've never given me a problem drag racing, autocrossing, or street drving. I think it looks fine.

Both pictures I posted are with Nitto tires. Nittos run narrower than other comperable sized tires.

I feel I need to say something on this one:
1. If the manufacturer says don't install this tire on a XX" rim, follow their warning. They know their products pretty well.
2. By installing the tire on a narrow rim, you are reducing the section with by about 0.2" per 0.5" rim width. So, in this case, you are reducing the section with by 0.6", AND you will be crowning the tread as well. Now, in order to get a good contact patch, you have to reduce the pressure...which seriously affects (in negative ways) 10 other tire parameters.
3. Sidewall stiffness goes way down. Like in another post I made, cornering stiffness is proportional to rim width to the power of 1/2. In other words, reducing rim width makes the sidewalls less stiff...and we're talking about significant amounts (10-15% in this case).
4. You're going to need a 265mm front tire to balance the sizes...even more so if you are really front heavy. Can you run a front tire that big?
My efforts will all be in vain if you are only after looks. If that isn't the case, use a 295mm tire instead. Bigger isn't always better.

Very wise advice... I appreciate your comments..
Cant really argue with a title of Mechanical Engineer (I gave up after 3rd year of trig.)
But none the less, sound advice
Thanks for lookin out for us.

I have personally seen a couple attempts at it from guys that did not want to spend money on 11 in wheels. Both times, the shops tried to mount the 315's on those 9 inch wheels, and struggled to get the tires on. One tire got its bead area a little ripped, and on the other, the rim got a little beat up after they worked on it for a very long time, then gave up.

I agree, not a very good idea. It MAY work (depending on tire brand), but like stated by many others, it is not recommended by thr tire manufacturer.
I had problems with a similar situation, where I was trying to mount a 255/40/17 BFG G-force KD on a 8" front wheel. For the life of me, I couldn't get the outside bead to seat when mounting it. I had like 90 psi in the tire, and the bead wouldn't pop. It was kind of scary, and told me that it really shouldn't be done. Thankfully, I had an older set of 9.5" wheels at home that were the perfect backspace for my car. The tires mounted so much easier and looked much better on the 9.5" wheels. I also know I'm getting a better contact patch and it's safer on the road.
I am running a 315/35/17 on the back of my car, but it is on an 11" wheel. Do it right,
Andy

i dont think its a problem https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif i see the ricers putting way to narrow a tire on a wheel thats 3" too wide :poke: put the right size tire on the right size wheel

I too want to run 315 x 17's on steel. Talked to Frank @ Stockton Wheel and they can widen steel wheels to 11 inches. Price wasn't bad if I recall. I am rethinking the 315's due to the huge difference in price over 285's; you can mount most makes on 9's, which you can get pretty easily.
Anyone think that 315's give an advantage over 285's in performace applications? Or, is it all for show?
